Queens courthouse jail is in atrocious condition

NY Daily News

Working conditions at the Queens Criminal Court complex’s detention center are so disgusting, correction officers have complained to state and federal workplace oversight agencies.

Rats scurry in the kitchen, roaches crawl in the locker room, and flies hover over hopelessly backed-up toilets, say filings with the state Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

“The appalling conditions in the Queens courts are consistent with the decaying infrastructure at our jail facilities,” said Benny Boscio, president of the Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association.

Photos obtained by the Daily News show an overflowing toilet, ripped-up flooring stained with water from leaks, peeling paint, black mold creeping up the walls, a trashed locker room, and a disheveled food storage area.

As if working conditions weren’t bad enough, the Correction Department’s staffing crisis has cut the number of officers regularly working at the Queens Detention Center in Kew Gardens.

Roughly 40 officers out of the center’s detachment of 173 were moved to Rikers Island, and an additional 12 officers have retired since May 2021, correction sources said.

On top of that, the Correction Department has been constantly “redeploying” or temporarily moving officers to Rikers from the Queens courts on a spot basis, further reducing available staff.

The complaint alleges a security entry gate in the intake area has been broken for months, forcing officers to leave the gate unsecured.

The complaint to state officials describes food being stored improperly, broken laundry machines and cleaning equipment, and a filthy kitchen and rest rooms. Devices that filter air and drinking water for the detainees have been broken for months, the complaint said.

A factor in keeping the facility clean is that those jobs are usually done by detainees from Rikers — but there hasn’t been such a work detail in months, said Correction Department sources.

The situation has slowed down court operations by delaying the production of detainees at court hearings, said the sources.

Jails. A place where humanity forgot.

Imagine being detained on alleged charges and can't afford bail and end up in a place like this

Department of corrections. Yea, corrections

Looks like a junkie was in there.
Around 20 years ago (the first (and last) time I was arrested for the public service of shooting rats coming out the sewer with an air rifle we all were in a cell with a junkie who stared withdrawing. The guy started convulsing, then crapped himself, then for the cherry on the cake started projectile vomiting all over the cell.
It was worse then the especial effects seen in the movie The Exorcist.
Everybody was screaming CO! CO! CO!
Then some drunk took of his sox, peed on his feet and shimmy'd up the bars with a matchbook and set the sprinklers off.
Oh what a long miserable night that was. The above is normal, that's what jail is!

All NYC Maintenace staff has been decimated and Civil Service test have dumbed down so the new workers are less quilfied qualified to perform their work. Most new management postions are based on cronyism, gender, race or all three. Without regard for qualifications you now see the results.

Ned. Wouldn't a slingshot or a blowgun worked as well on the emerging sewer rats?

It would be a great place to permanently house Dumblasio. He deserves no less for all he pulled.

Slingshots and blow guns are illegal in NYC.

At George: --Absolutely not
Darts wont do anything to rats unless they are extreme poison tipped. Almost impossible to aim at a rat. Either case somebody will step on one, kids will find play with darts.

Slingshot: Very hard to aim with a rat. You would need to be an expert or get close and if you miss... these big Norway rats will pump themselves a shot of adrenalin jump and attack you. (that means stiches, rabies shots, in the ass, at the ER, every 3rd day for a month) They are brazen like razor fanged wild boars

Air propelled speeds, laser sight and knowing what your doing with is much safer and dead accurate at a rat up to 30 feet. I cant disclose the rest because I don't want to post a "how too" with all the stupid lurking.
I'm very unhappy with anything in stupid peoples hands, that includes men or women, black or white, cars, bikes, e-scooters, kitchen utensils, crayons, crowbars, screwdrivers, scissors, cellphones and even dogs. I'm not prejudice or discriminative as many say.

You gotta know what your doing, what to use, when and where NOT to use. They teach this and 100 or so other safety things in gun school which is like attending and completing drivers Ed.
Always proper use and safety first.

Haa Haa Haa
Seems everything's going to be illegal soon, and everything that is illegal will be legal. Just robbed a bodega and got your ass caught, received a broken fingernail in the scuffle? No problem, the city and DA prosecutor or some so called judge frees you and puts the bodega owner or cops in jail instead.
No law and order thanks to the progressives and jackasses at the NY state legislature.
Your on your own or sheep & sitting duck people !!!!

That's the way it works and has always worked in this county.
If you don't like jail or handcuffs don't commit crime, DWI or run with criminals because nobody wants nutjob killers, criminals and drunks on the streets and roads.
To get detained, processed and jailed means the cops have some kind of strong valid evidence and or witnesses against you.
Use common sense and don't be an asshole to the cops, you will have your say in court.
What young people need to understand is crime or driving an automobile (a privilege via issued license) are both NOT rights NOR civil liberty's and never have been in this country. Most School and college teachers are radical liberals and communists gas lighting and feeding people bullshit.
Brainwashing via the DOE is one of the biggest problem's in this country.
AOC is a perfect example of the insane crap and thinking colleges are pushing.

If you don't like the system or laws move to the Netherlands or pull crap in China, Iran or Afghanistan. You can then cry innocent to your appointed a firing squad.
The brats and stupid don't know how good they have it, no change or reform needed. The system has worked for near 300 years and don't need fixing.

Funny how supposedly "Freedoms" loving right wing-nuts always believe that someone is guilty as soon as they are arrested. No such thing as "innocent until proven guilty" for a TrumpTurd. What a bunch of hypocrites you all are.

Really? Why bother with courts if that were really true?

Maybe you should stick to shooting rats.
