Bloomberg says no to National Guard request because they carry guns

From The Brooklyn Paper:

Mayor Bloomberg has snubbed Borough President Markowitz’s impassioned plea to bring the National Guard to Hurricane Sandy-scarred Brooklyn — arguing that approving the Beep’s request would be a waste of federal manpower and turn the borough into a police state.

“We don’t need it,” Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday during a press update on the city’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”

Markowitz demanded the National Guard’s help just an hour before Bloomberg’s press conference, claiming that the NYPD and FDNY are “brave — but overwhelmed” by all the challenges Sandy brought when it visited the borough on Monday night: flooding, power outages, and looting.

“All of our resources have been stretched to the limit,” Markowitz said. “In the name of public safety we need to send more National Guard personnel into Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Red Hook, and any other locations.”

Markowitz hopes that the sight of an armed soldier would deter criminal activity in the still-unaccessible evacuation zones — such as the rash of break-ins that took place in Coney Island hours after Sandy kissed the borough goodbye — but the Mayor said the NYPD was more than capable of handling the job.

“There are plenty of locations upstate and in surrounding states where they don’t have a police department the size of New York and they can use help [from the National Guard],” said Bloomberg.

Bravo Mr. mayor, spoken like a true utopian leftist, I'm sure the criminal element will respond to your in kind to your gesture. They will act like civilized humans for the first time in their lives only for you. Thanks

LOL!
Not to worry...our big imposing 5'7" Michael Bloomberg will protect us all.

Uh...Mike don't the NYDP's officers carry guns too?

Strip them of their firearms, for the duration of the recovery period, because criminals might overpower them and seize their guns.

If Mike calls in the guard, he will be admitting that he can't handle the situation. An egotist like Bloomberg can't handle that.

Don't worry folks, for us taxpayers will be geting the bill for all of the emergency services overtime.

You can bank on that!

Why is Bloomberg cupping his hands over his crotch?
This is very revealing!

The mayor is far too old to be popping a "woody
over anything but an increase in his personal wealth.

"I've got power. I've got gas. I've got my bodyguards. We don't need the national guard. Life is good".

It looks like Marty is about to poke Mike in his nuts.

Regarding Mayor Bloomberg's facial expression:

"Please get me out of all this. I thought that being mayor of New York was going to be a relaxing fun hobby for me. Book me a flight to Bermuda".

The egos of Bloomberg and Kelly are having terrible effects in the Rockaways and Staten Island.

ASK THE GOVERNOR TO BRING IN THE NATIONAL GUARD!

YOUR CONSTITUENTS ARE HURTING!

Wattsamatta mayor...you afraid we might start a revolution...grab their guns and march upon city hall?

Mayor La Guardia would't have just been standing around jerking us all off with platitudes and anal retentive gestures.

HE'D BE OUT THERE DOING SOME HEAVY LIFTING!

Look at what an emasculated cold hearted shrimp we've got for a mayor instead!

He has contempt for ALL OF US New Yorkers that aren't rich members of his club!

I hope you voters are all enjoying the 3rd term you handed this aloof goof ball.

Perhaps, after your brains have dried off a bit, you'll be making a far better choice next time around.

BEWARE OF CHRISTINE QUINN the real estate industry's whore!

Steve Behar--
I guess the way Mayor Bloomberg sees it--it's all about tarnishing NYC's image.

If he calls for the national guard, that might frighten tourists away, and there goes our most important business down the drain.

Damn--It's ruined right now anyway!

Badly affected neighborhoods could benefit greatly from receiving the guard's assistance.

Bloomberg has one-third of a point ... I don't want less-trained National Guard people trying to do patrol in a tinder box situation --- NYPD has a much better record than the vast majority of police departments in not allowing police-civilian interaction to end in a fatality. The idea I've heard in the past was to use patrol resources from outside the city in areas where there are fewer problems in order to free the NYPD to flood areas where there are more problems.

Just goes to show Hiz (Dis)Honor doesn't need to be out of the country during an emergency to be totally out of touch with true New Yorkers

If the national guard steps in, they might discover the enormous population of illegal immigrants and the illegal things they do. That would leave B without the opportunity to learn Spanish...

Marty, what you thinking? You run a borough of native taxpayers, not elitist Manhattanites. Don't worry I'm sure most of the Staten Island NYPD will be re-assigned to Manhattan and Williamsburg while your borough's cries for help are unheeded.

This mayor seems to not know the military isn't just all firepower. There are Military Police units that are trained (esp Natl Guard units) to deal with civil disorder; Heavy Engineering units with cranes, earth moving equipment and heavy trucks; Logistics units with cargo trucks, food, medicine and water supply, and fuel tankers; specialist units that have flood lights and large generators and water pumping capability.

Bravo, previous posting! The National Guard is not populated with ill-equipped incompetents. This is what they DO. Disasters like this are what they trained for. If anything, they will be more help than NYPD. The NYPD can concentrate on security and the NG can use their man-power and brute force to organize and start the recovery process.

Call me when this waste of flesh is hanging from a light pole somewhere.

Otherwise, solve your own problems. It is obvious your choice of mayor for life is "poor" for lack of a better term.

I'm really not sure where this is coming from as the National Guard has been out all over the city since Sunday. They're here, they're helping, they're making a difference.

Prayers for the people of NYC and Jersey. You'll both need them. I also hope you've all learned the value of preparedness.

Wait a minute. I distinctly remember getting off the subway at 34th Street about three months ago in order to go to a doctor appointment, and seeing several dozen fully armed and combat uniformed military personnel looking as if they were ready to blow Osama bin Laden's ghost to smithereens if he should happen to appear. Evidently, Bloomberg had no qualms whatsoever about that.

Make no mistake, Bloomberg is just looking to save face, and the safety and well-being of thousands of New Yorkers adversely effected by his failure to neglect the infrastructure is a sacrifice he's perfectly willing to make.

If he has even the smallest shred of decency in him, he should resign right now.

Notice I said "if."

Sorry, the second part of my post above should have read more like: "Make no mistake, Bloomberg is just looking to save face, and the safety and well-being of thousands of New Yorkers adversely effected by his neglect of infrastructure cited as inadequate years ago is a sacrifice he's perfectly willing to make."

Okay, Mayor Bloomberg, when my home is looted, my sister gets raped and my mom gets killed because the NYPD wasn't guarding my house, I'll hold you personally responsible. Handle that you POS. Oh, and if I kill the looter, is it okay if I used HIS illegal weapon or will you charge me for a crime, too? I would rather be shot execution style than EVER vote for you. Take your money and run, dirt bag.
