Cuomo shuts down the subway at night to discourage homeless occupation

CBS News

The city that never sleeps is being forced to get some rest starting next week, when New York City's subway system will begin shutting down overnight. Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the unprecedented move Thursday, which they said is necessary to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

Starting Wednesday, May 6, New York City subways will shut down from 1-5 a.m. to clean the public transit system on a daily basis. Ridership has decreased by 92% during the pandemic, and those hours have the fewest number of riders, the governor said.

Currently, the MTA is cleaning its network of trains and buses every 72 hours — but Cuomo said it's not enough. The governor said disinfecting the transit system daily is necessary so essential workers can get to work safely, without fear of being infected during their commute. "This is going to be one of the most aggressive, creative, challenging undertakings that the MTA has done," he said during his daily press briefing.

Look at that imbecile, can't even hold the tank by himself. I suggest Cuomo do his hands on governor act at any nursing home and help push a gurney with a COVID-19 casualty on it.

You know the homeless can easily adapt and just roam or dwell on the streets for four hours then go back on the train at 5:01. The only people this affects are all the night shift workers. Another stupid reaction decision by the unreasonably lionized Governor and the loathsome Mayor.

We are witnessing the unfortunate result of the law of unintended consequences.
The suicide rate is rising in relation to the length of confinement and the devastation of economic loss spreading throughout the nation.
I only hope that the CDC is monitoring the number of suicides occurring during this difficult period in our history.
We know that the calls to suicide hotlines are rising at an alarming rate, and this must be taken into account by governors (like Cuomo) as they consider continuing to impose drastic rules and measures which have never been imposed for other Pandemics which have killed more Americans in the past.

On a tangential note; this is VERY important news from the CDC.
It appears,on preliminary interpretation of the information provided, that the CDC is actually revising the number of actual COVID-19 deaths reported DOWN to
37,308.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm

currently, the number of COVID-19 deaths is being reported as nearly double that number because of the "fog of war" effect where initial reports are assuming everyone with pneumonia is a Covid-19 patient, when in reality, deaths continue to occur from the common Seasonal Flu, bacterial pneumonia, pneumonia related to lung disease and pneumonia from other viral causes. The CDC is beginning to sort out the actual data and reassessing the numbers.

Not only would this further decrease the Infected Mortality Rate of the disease, it would also necessitate the re-evaluation of what's being done to keep Americans in this state of economic disaster that we're now living through.

Sonny CUOMIGULA (a/k/a Andrew Cuomo) is an openly practicing, grand larcenous, free walking criminal (and, one of the three Albany kings, the other two being Sheldon Silver and Dean Skelos, so labeled by The New York Daily News), who should FIRST shut down the capital in Albany and fumigate THAT (from ALL of his cronyism, nepotism, graft and endless greed), before fumigating anything else——and, then he should be indicted, prosecuted and jailed for his sickness that is WORSE than any manufactured, man made virus known to human life: NAKED GREED, cognitive dissonance and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), three forms of mental illness for which there IS no cure. And, the public be damned (again and STILL).

Half of the crew I work with gets off work at 2:30AM. This is going to throw a pretty big wrench into our deliveries.

I guess I'm glad to see this, but it kind of seems that it's being done in prep for the people who soon might be coming back to work ... not for those of us who have been going to work and complaining about it for almost 2 months. Enh.

how i wish that guy would stop his ranting. it just brings this blog down to the level of the antivaxers.

can someone gently break the news to them that no one reads that garble?

it hurts the effort of those serious contributions to this forum.

sorry.

I like the ranting. JQ and the OG QC let everyone speak their piece. No censorship ever. No other Queens focused website allows it.
Just scroll.

Chances are, overnight subway service will probably never come back (on a permanent basis) after all this becomes a distant memory.

Much of you see above is from what the commies called "useful idiots".

I won't deny there is serious damage being done to this country's and the world's economy, however, the usual black hand of the far right is up to its usual tricks and distractions.

Read these articles and you'll see who and what is stoking a lot of this and what the real motives are:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/inside-the-conservative-networks-backing-anti-quarantine-protests/2020/04/22/da75c81e-83fe-11ea-a3eb-e9fc93160703_story.html

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/22/opinion/coronavirus-protests-astroturf.html

Also, do a name search on those shadowy figures mentioned.

These will set you on the path to what is really going on.

I do believe the restrictions can begin to be relieved in low-density areas where the cases have been few.

However, if spikes occur those areas should be confined and under quarantine if the easing results in a large number of cases which can threaten the surrounding areas who have maintained more conservative easement schedules.

Rob in Manhattan-

absolutely correct in all you say - and step by step the country will try to come back but as soon as an area gets cleared, you will get someone cloned off a sanctuary city hot spot showing up and pushing the area back down.

If you have a forest fire you get nowhere if you just tamp out the brush fires that will flare up again and again at the edges. You got to attack the fire at its source.

These are the 'nests'the Democrats have created around the country which they have declared as 'no go' zone to the Federal Government, in effect, creating areas they have declared are 'secessionist' enclaves answerable only to the local Democratic Party and not lawful government authority. This is very dangerous territory for any political party.

In essence, the Democrats have done the same things they did back in 1861, but on the county rather than the state level. And Washington's response should be the same. Root out the rebels, occupy the areas that are part of the insurrections, and try the leaders who defied the lawful Federal authority in Federal Courts.

Every government on this planet, leftist, rightist, communist, socialist, royalist, agrees on one thing: the interests of its citizens are paramount. Well, perhaps except North Korea ... and the Democratic Party.

Rob in Manhattan, Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post. Covid's been sooooo good to Amazon, he'll be the world's first (public) trillionaire. And the NYT? C'mon! Anyone who has a serious desire to ferret out the truth knows the MSM is not where you turn; it's the propaganda arm of the deep state (look up Operation Mockingbird - it's been around for decades). The planet is run by an organized crime syndicate who, as Eisenhower put it in his farewell speech, has no allegiance to country, religion and certainly not the people.

The Mercy was sent away and Javits closed. The "pause" was meant to "flatten the curve" not the economy. It's more than just right wingers who see our constitutional rights being stolen in broad daylight.

I for one would like to know who benefits financially from all the pharmaceuticals they plan to inject into our veins. Could it be Fauci, the guy who was in charge while the Wuhan lab (et al) was tinkering with gain-of-function (species to species and increased transmissibility) while a large cadre of scientists thought it a "too dangerous" kind of research? Doesn't Fauci own a bunch of vaccine patents? What do you think about Event 201? Wasn't its timing at least suspicious to you?

I often think this divisiveness is engineered (Trump, pandemic) as a diversion for what they're really doing: Robbing us blind.
