Ugly statue will soon be foisted upon LIC
The 8 ½-foot-tall sculpture, called the Sunbather, comes at a cost of $515,000 and is part of the Department of Cultural Affairs ‘Percent for Art’ initiative.
The DCLA selected the sculpture, which will be permanent, based on the opinion of an expert panel. The public art is required since New York law requires that one percent of the budget for City-funded construction projects be spent on public art.
The sculpture sparked a heated discussion when Community Board 2’s land use committee first heard of the plan and saw the design at a November 2014 committee meeting.
The committee members said they felt caught off guard by the proposal and were upset that they did not have more input in the design.
Penny Lee, who works with the Department of City Planning, told the committee at the time that the artwork was “not just a whimsical piece he [the artist] came with up. It may look whimsical but an enormous amount of thought and attention to place was put into the design.”
Make sure to click the link above to see how much taxpayer money got blown on this pile of pink crap.

The emperor is naked, you dolt!
$515,000? Why not $51,000? Why not $5,150,000?
Finkelpearl left the "Queens Museum" in shambles and financial straits. And now he's taken to destroying our streets with so called art that belongs on a barge headed for the dump.
This piece of garbage was installed Saturday morning with absolutely no fanfare:
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
And if I could be receiving ONE HALF MILLION DOLLARS for such a piece of "crap" it would be so BEAUTIFUL!!!
I can't wait for the graffiti artists to get to this!
This hideous dump, the statue and it's execution in placing it, is why street art should not be deemed acceptable or dictated by government or the wealthy. A half a million dollars is considered F.U. money next to the billions the city and state spends on essential services, but this could have filled potholes, fixed damaged sidewalk ramps for the handicapped and hired a few people to do those jobs. It also could have went to hospitals too and maybe even fill the cultural needs in other areas. In fact, Jamaica has a budding artists groups there that have to rely on predatory developer and shell company cash.
Graffiti isn't going to be enough. And A barge will just make more people see it. The Ebola Strain Hipster must be drawn and quartered with the remains sent to Jimbrowski's house.
Half a million could have funded more first responders in LIC, where the population next year will rise by at least 10k.
Greenwood cemetery probably wouldn't accept it in exchange for 'civic virtue'...
Big lump of pink bubble gum.
Draining the NYC Swamp would overflow the East River.
Hey guys, no problem. You have your own civic now, or a few of them so we understand.
People have been bitching about this 'art' for a few years, but when you have a passel of 'Hillaries' running the program there is not a whole hell of a lot you can do now, is there?
Jimmy will give your group a generous coffee allowance in exchange for your beaming faces next to his (which shows he 'cares'), and he will get you some 'good' press as some 'good' developers to come in to talk to you and tell you what they are planning for your community, and he will make sure there is 'important' community input by giving you the chance to rearraige some trees in a plaza fronting a 70 story building which, or couse, will make you all 'playas.'
Should make at least a half dozen pictures of Jimmy in his next oversized vanity mailing to you all that he gets free postage on by calling it a 'community information bulletin'.
Just think of what could have been done with this money as a down payment on the Elks Building.
(BTW anyone ready to spill the beans on your 'insiders' discussion with Jimmy on that fiasco. Of course not, you might lose your 'insider' status with the boy)
Demolition fencing is now up at the elks lodge, btw. The permit for it literally reads 'demolition'. That building probably won't last through the end of the year.
It figures, brainless Van Bramer likes it.
Which one of his artsy fartsy friends is the "sculptor"?
Give me a giant wad of pink bubble gum , and I could come up with something better.
Some body ought to pin back JVB's elephant ears with a bit of gum....come to think of it.
Nice work Jimmy .... and the Community Quislings that supported you behind the community's back - and we know who you are.
Hope you choke on the ice cream money he gives you.
I'm all for community art and sculptures, but why does it have to be so ugly?
Jimmy will have the color pink changed to lavender.
