LI town has illegal conversion problem

From CBS:

Tucked outside of Stony Brook University, they often stick out like sore thumbs — run down, lawns torn up for parking — and neighbors fed up over an explosion of illegal off campus student housing.

“Weeds where flowers used to grow are no like 4 to 5 feet tall, there is garbage all over the street, and cars, we can’t get out of our driveways,” Diane Sander said.

“The deplorable conditions of the homes. If they would upkeep the houses and keep them neat and clean and trimmed, we wouldn’t even notice them,” Bruce Sander said.

Residents count more than 300 houses owned by absentee landlords who subdivide single family homes and pack in the renters.

“We have five in this house,” one student said.

Brookhaven town law prohibits more than four unrelated people under one roof.

Generation Gentrification and Inebriation. This is the new gilded age. And these assholes are the future of this country. Hell, this has been the recent past and present going by how dumb society and culture is.

It's like animal house but with hipshits. Stonybrook has a taste of what goes on and is permitted in Williamsburgh, East Village, LIC, and Bushwick. Although what has happened in Montauk the last few summers should have been a warning.

Looks like stonybrook is also going to need a night mayor of their own

Of course the law won't be enforced. There is too much to be made off of all of these students. The town knows where their revenue comes from.

This is not a over development problem, but an underdevelopment issue. Clearly, the demand is not being met by the low density housing supply, especially for low income students. Some middle ground type of housing is needed here, certainly mutli-unit rentals at the periphery of the campus. The municipality should look at these areas as ripe for a relaxation of zoning.

I don't know about you guys, but I can't see the video embedded on the page even though it is coded correctly. I don't know why this is and I apologize. I hope this gets corrected because I think CBS does some of the best reports out there and I want as many people to see them as possible.

Ann-Margaret Carrozza's home town. When she was our assemblywoman, she still practiced elder law there

This has been going on for many years all over the country, in areas where there is a college . I remember this going on in this area, and in surrounding areas, in the early 1980s when I lived about 5 miles away from the university. I had a neighboring house with many students living there, each had their own car, a definite requirement when there is little or no public transportation, cars where often parked illegally on the unkempt lawn as there was no other place to put them nearby. No one knew who the absentee landlord was, not even the students living in the house. At least then the students were quiet and reasonably behaved, no noise or parties. They did not bother the neighbors. But, the property was an eyesore as the students were not responsible for any upkeep of the outside. The students were paying an , even then, exorbitant rent to the landlord, they had never met...only a representative of his. Just look in craigslist for student housing listings near ANY college and there are many listings inviting students to rent properties nearby. Authorities all over usually look the other way to any possible violations of local housing ordinances or codes. Often, they cannot locate the absentee property owner landlords. Almost always, students deal with a third party, never encountering the actual owner landlord.

Crapman, the video loads up perfectly. (I'm heading for those Pocono Mountains seen in the lead-in ad.)

They missed or deliberately left out why these shitholes are suddenly in demand and these students have less housing options. (perhaps they are not allowed to say)
I will S'plain it:

Obama gave a shitloads of federal reward $$ to re-vitalize dumpy democrat "towns of diversity & color" like Riverhead. Riverhead is now fixed up and going through this gentrification to be the new Hamptons. East & South Hampton are screwed up, out of the picture packed with all the illegals working the lawn services, hotels and restaurants unbearable traffic & taxes. Do to this all the sec 8 garbage and illegals priced out of Riverhead are being migrated to available housing in Stoneybrook and points east. The landlords seem to love Sec 8's tenants because the government guarantees them the rent money and in Long Island landlords have more rights, and if your an asshole you lose your sec 8. Too add many landlords are slobs, alcoholics and good for nothing themselves who inherited dead parents homes.

Mattituck and Greenport are taking the worst hits (you need a gun in Greenport after dark) I'm personally loosing near $175K on selling the summer house in Mattituck (Southold) due to garbage migration.

I saw the video crapper. Your right about CBS local too, even if their reports are too short.

I always have trouble embedding their videos on my blog though, I have to wait a day when it comes on youtube.

Crappy, the problem is that the embedded link in the iframe "src" attribute is http. Your site is hosted under blogger's SSL protocol, so your (and most other people's) browsers will forbid non-secure content from loading. Change the "http" in that attribute to "https" and it should load.

You'll be kicking yourself in a decade when that area is gentrifying and the property value triples.

Stony Brook does not guarantee housing beyond the first year....Great the foreign students have to make friends fast. Most colleges close down doms. during Spring breaks and Christmas.
