Union Turnpike medians need some work

From CBS 2:

A deteriorating median running down the middle of one of the busiest streets in Queens is in need of recovery, and residents say they’re getting concerned.

Community Activist Louis LaPolla says the four and a half mile stretch of Union Turnpike, with lifeless trees and crumbling curbs, has been that way for nearly six years.

CBS2 requested an on-camera interview with the parks department, but it would only say that since it’s not a safety issue it’s at the bottom of the priority list.

Everything Parks Dept SHOULD BE DOING is put at the bottom of their priority list!

"the bottom of the priority list"

HA HA, every fucking thing in this majorly fucked up borough and majorly fucked up city is always on the bottom of the priority list. In fact there is never a damn thing that is on the top of the priority list, even dangerous illegal conversions and shoddy construction happening at the moment. Nothing gets priority, except wasteful spending of tax payers money, like planting dead trees.

NYC SUCKS.

This is the kind of stuff that should be handled before it becomes a lawsuit or settlement that the City has to pay out for. It would be cheaper to maintain the trees than to make these payments after the fact. I'd love to see a mayor who will be proactive on these issues. Oh well.

I've seen them planting dead trees. Complain to the local councilman and they intimidate you by asking for your name, phone and street address and e-mail so they can solicit donations to their campaigns.

What's on the top of Parks. Dept list? Commercial promotions and arranging food festivals?

How did malnourished hazardous trees on medians did not make Vision Zero. There is a good chance a branch can fall and land on a windshield.

And with the unpredictable weather we have been having, those dead trees and little trees can be instantly uprooted and destroy vehicles moving and parked.

Disgraceful. This city is broke. Financially and morally.

Isn't a dead tree falling onto a street, a safety issue?

Stop the presses....breaking news...there are dead trees in Queens....wasteful spending...planting dead trees... the borough is dead

Its not a priority with the city since it doesn't deal with income inequality or affordable housing.

LaPolla says they planted about 80 trees and most of them died right away. How just did that happen? Now what's up with that?

This is were you go after every elected official in Queens, the borough president, and the local community boards. Again. Again. Hit them on their clubhouse Facebook pages. Have fun.

Where is Queens Civic on this? Can they make a statement without waiting for a politician to hand them text?

Where are the Queens weeklies.

You know, we need to set up a blog that shows every shithole in the borough - with captions under them of politicians telling us how lucky we are that they are serving us.

Similar problem on Main St. The Parks Dept has replanted the trees that died there a few times, and removed concrete to give some treewells more dirt and water. Some have survived, but many didn't make it. At this point it might be better to just plant flowers or bushes there instead.

>intimidate you by asking for your name

Are you that easily intimidated? Still, dumb of them to not check a complaint just because you don't want to give your name.

9 out of 10 times the Church always sells the neighborhood down the river.
Especially a catholic church because all the diocese's and Vatican are sinking like a lead balloons. Its worst in California, I guess all them illegals are opting for cases of curveza and not filling the collection plate as the Vatican planned.

Deme quatros latas de cerveza, por favo !!

Remember when we took care of trees near our homes. Cleaned the pits, loosened the soil in spring along with fertilizer and water. Not much of that anymore....

Seeing some pretty sad specimens along Woodhaven too....the constant fumes can't be good for the smallest saplings. Maybe hardier shrubs would suffice. Or simply placing new plantings curb-side, not on the median.

Since they like to hide the speed/red light cameras behind the last tree (or utility pole) as one comes to an intersection, you would think that would be one more reason to plant some healthy trees, just so they can make more money off the cameras.

Union Turnpike: Rory and Nily have their district offices on Union Turnpike. Are they not interested in beautifying its medians?

The problem stretches even further east than Mr. LaPolla stated. On Union from Marathon all the way to Little Neck Parkway, especially near Winchester the media is literally desintergrating. What a mess.
