Avella, Peralta defeated in anti-IDC votes

From the Queens Chronicle:

New York State is a different place today. It's littered with the wreckage of what once was the Independent Democratic Conference.

And nowhere was the rubble deeper than in Queens, where a pair of state Senators were ousted in Tuesday's Democratic primaries by challengers who dubbed them traitors to their party.

In District 13, it was four-term state Sen. Jose Peralta (D-East Elmhurst) who lost his re-election bid to former mayoral aide Jessica Ramos — a fierce critic of her "turncoat" opponent's IDC membership.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Ramos had won 12,181 vote to Peralta's 10,021 — good for a 10-percentage point margin.

In District 11, fellow four-term incumbent state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) was defeated by former city Comptroller John Liu in a rematch of 2014's Democratic primary — a race Avella won by a mere 568 votes.

This time around, it was Liu who came out victorious, defeating the incumbent 12,133 ballots to 10,846 — a 6-point margin.

The funny thing is unless there's a flip in the Senate then there won't be any "progressive legislation" getting passed in Albany because Simcha Felder won re-election easily. Basically all that happened is that the greater Bayside area voted for overdevelopment and corruption. Smart move!

So sorry Avella lost, even though he had critics on this comment feed, he was a rare breed, an honest official. Liu winning is despairing and detrimental to the borough, and it looks like there is a new demographic living in that district.

Great now we are stuck with john liu again. Won't be voting for him in the actual elections that's for sure!

Well you can kiss places like Queens Civic Congress, Bayside and Poppenhusen goodbye.

The problem with Tony was that he wanted to be a cult - built nothing that would outlast him.

As to Liu, the people voted exactly what they wanted - it was the Asians who wanted one of their boys to do things their way. Welcome to 'Flushing East' - a place once called Bayside.

Funny about the Democrats and identity politics. They complain Trump but they are experts at dividing and exploiting divisions within a community. This guy got in because he was Asian. And the Democrats will say nothing but their tired 'diversity' garbage.

Anonymous said...

Everyone talks about integrity, fighting corruption, showing independence rewarding hard work and results. However, today, the party bosses showed who's in charge...and that the voters are mere sheep who follow the script...the play...the way the bosses directed it.

The destruction of Bayside is now complete and John Liu will complete the job that Valllone has started.

Congrats Bayside...have fun walking down the cattleway...there's a bolt pistol waiting for you at the end.

I'm sure the race baiters will crawl out to opine about the Liu-Avella contest.

IMO, race is only one component, the other is just changing demographics of N.E. Queens.

I've been in Bayside for business since 1996 and more-so beginning in mid 1998. In the last 7 years Bayside has become decidedly more Asian. This trend was going on at low level even 20 years ago, but it is now undeniable. They are overwhelmingly Democratic.

Another factor is wide ranging revulsion at what today's Trump GOP has become. This situation has become more polarized than anything I've seen since I was a child in the 1960s when the issues were civil rights and the Vietnam war.

Avella's actions whether pragmatic or cynical, caught up with him and he got washed away as did most of the others whose actions had schemed against the interests of average constituents.

The State Senate will be Democratic beginning next year. Unfortunately, a lot of the corrupting money will now just flow to the other side of the the aisle.

Heartbroken to lose Tony Avella. He is the only one we could count on. Are there absentee ballots? Recount?? Fraud??

TommyR said...

liu being asian is one factor among many. there are many kinds of asians and they aren't a political monolith anymore than superficially similar types of white people are. I didn't see Avella standing up much to zone changes...

anyway, plenty of upper middle class and (& just plain upper class) home owning Koreans, whites, Indians, etc out in NEQ. will be interesting to see whether they engage with the new (old)comer any differently.

it would be more important to focus on his track record as a comptroller.

Recount?? no

Fraud?? yes

Trump wants to clean up the voter roles and you just follow the Democratic Machine script - which is written to benefit them and not you.

So once again, someone decides to say that RACE DOES MATTER. So people vote Liu simply because he's Asian? People then speak of Trump...

If this is the case, there's no difference between someone who votes a race and those who cater to one. Party Bosses win either way.

hahaha, spoken like a true non-minority.

Asian Americans are benefiting greatly from the President's policies like ending discriminatory policies at IVY league schools. Unlike Democrats like Deblasio who want to take away Asian seats at the specialized high schools.
Read this:
https://gop.com/washington-examiner-asian-americans-are-winning-big-under-trump

Trump won a greater percentage of Black and Hispanic voters in 2016 and his approval in the black community is increasing, despite white liberals on TV 24/7 telling all the minorities that they're stupid for liking him. Amazing how talk can only get you so far isn't it?

This "revulsion" you speak of, what exactly is it based on ? That trump said Mexico is sending us a lot of rapists and murderers? You've seen the list of MS-13 members being deported from Long Island I assume?! Mexican-Americans applaud the Trump administration for ridding their communities of this pestilence!

My guess is that you've been listening to Upper West Side libtard news editors too long on NBC, CNN or the NYTimes which is the permanent home of the perpetually offended.
Is your "revulsion" perhaps more because he's stated that we need to end ridiculous and out of control immigration schemes like chain-migration filling up Queens single family homes with 30 people per floor, and abusive visa systems crowding our universities with Chinese spies? Look up Confucious Institutes or just read this:

Sadly, corruption rules. Liu will definitely not take on the DOB and zoning regulations! Very sad day come December 31st and the new State Senator.

Read CityLimits. It wasn't the IDC alliance that brought down Tony Avella. Liu was campaigning on, "We need change." Well, we don't need change when an elected and his staff are taking action on matters brought to them.

Should we look to the Republicans?

Liu's victory makes Paladino more competitive now. If the Reps were smart, they would band behind Paladino because there are enough crossover and disaffected Dems to be mined to actually win the seat. Of course, as always with Republicans in Queens, the big "if" rarely materializes.

You are absolutely correct. Monserrate is a common thug and violent felon. Espada spent a lifetime enriching himself at the expense of the Bronx. Two POS's.

You can disagree with Avella on whatever you like, but linking him with these other scumbags doesn't pass the smell test.

I bet you Vicky Paladino would take a harder stand against the mayor on the SHSAT than Liu would. Her campaign needs to help her get that message out to the Asian community. Because that senate vote can and will stop the mayor and Carranza if it squashes the repeal of Hecht-Calandra

Not mentioned here is that all four candidates will still be on the ballot. Avella may pick off enough votes from Liu on the Independence and Women's Equality lines to hand victory to Paladino. Could happen.

Avella refused to take the stipends that came with his committee leadership.

And did you consider that, by joining the IDC, Avella was hoping that he could enact legislation to benefit his district? Remember that even with the IDC rejoining the Dems, they don't have a majority because of Simcha Felder. (And nothing that happened yesterday will change that.)

Wonder if Liu will flip-flop and go against his Progressive handlers to support keeping the specialized high school entrance test.

Rube in Manhattan,

I call you guys libtards because you continue to do the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. That's the definition of insanity according to Einstein.

Libtards continue to hit the play button on breathless CNN and NBC news stories about how the President is going down for two years now, but it never happens.

Talk about typecasting yourself, have you ever taken a few minutes to read your own words and wonder how much of your ideas come from hack "editors" in the news media?

I'm sure you were convinced of Hillary's victory in November 2016, even as she was too drunk to come out and concede defeat. Ask yourself why you were so certain of her victory that night and why you were so far off. I should get paid for this type of therapy, really.

Manafort was indicted on tax issues from years before he worked with Trump's campaign. He only worked on the Trump campaign a short while anyway, and there's not been a shred of evidence of this so called "collusion" from his legal problems. Just a bunch of off shore accounts and tax issues.

There's been plenty of T & A action however, through Stormy Daniels (who's apparently the new role model/hero for women, according to the liberal press) and other side-show stories but somehow, never a leak or inside story of actual collusion with Russia.

What has come to light through all this is the actual collusion between the Obama administration, Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Obama appointed FBI/CIA. The emails and texts reveal everything you need to know. Basically, they all lied to FISA courts in an organized plan to undo a duly elected President. This "collusion" bullshit is just the tail end of that illegal manipulation of our court system. Ask yourself this: if there was something on Trump, wouldn't it have been leaked by now, two years into this?

You talk about Woodward's book, LOL, Woodward himself just said this when asked if he found any evidence, in all of his research and interviews, of "collusion":

"I did not, and of course, I looked for it, looked for it hard. And so you know, there we are,"
Bob Woodward

Sure, I'll have a drink and continue to enjoy the show watching people like you implode when the news stories you cling to for salvation don't line up with actual reality. ...fade to that image of grown men and women crying while kneeling on the ground on election day........

Affectionately,

Harry Haller

@Harry

Woodward did find that the cabinet members (those appointed and not elected) are going behind Trump's back shaping policies.

https://impunitycity.wordpress.com/2018/09/06/the-deep-state-manifesto/

Trump is not running the country, the deep, no, the steady state is, going by that irresponsible op-ed the NY times ran weeks ago. Trump is too busy looking at his twitter responses all day and night.

Manafort's vile intransigence and compulsive spending (ostrich coats. these assholes have the same taste as 70's pimps) is not just tax issues, this bastard has made a career lobbying propping up dictators and oligarch rulers, some who used to be allies.

It's not collusion or even hacking to influence the election (that is so obvious now), it's money laundering. And it's possible that when Manafort was campaign manager, he was laundering foreign donor cash to pay for Stormy, Karen McDougal and even that playboy centerfold who got allegedly knocked up by that GOP fundraiser.

And Manafort got sloppy with his dealings and was exposed. That might have been when the Trump campaign let him go.

- or, if he chooses to remain silent and not endorse anyone.

The new slogan should be: "Anyone but Liu."
