Online grocery giant FreshDirect is axing scores of immigrants in a crackdown on undocumented workers at its Queens warehouse.

FreshDirect axes immigrant workers

Teary-eyed workers filed out of the delivery company's factory in Long Island City yesterday after supervisors demanded they produce papers proving their immigration status is legal.

Jim Moore, FreshDirect's senior vice president for business affairs, said in a statement the company is "cooperating with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services in its review of employment documentation." He declined further comment.

Duh; Fresh Direct and local 85 did not know that most of their staff/members are illegal? Duh; local 805 is guilty of exploiting folks already exploited by Fresh Direct. Duh; pile on the misery Local 805 - take money from anybody - to protect the workers rights - yeah right. Both employer and organizers should be heavily fined and FD and Local officers should be criminally indicted for harboring so many illegals!Get real legal employees for goodness sakes.

pretty funny logo. The snowman is puffing on a real pipe, from which smoke clouds are rising. :)

Why were the US CIS agents not outside slapping handcuffs on these "teary eyed" ILLEGAL Aliens as they exited?

We can now expect that these "teary eyed" ILLEGAL Aliens will be welcomed with open arms by the Commissar to provide (at your expense right before Christmas) all the welfare that a Commissar can find. Sanctuary cities are designed for ILLEGAL Aliens, not the US CITIZENS who pay for them.

The only good news is that Fresh Direct will go out of business, or actually hire CITIZENS (of this country, thank you) to do those jobs at competitive pay, with competitive benefits. Now, wouldn't that be great right before Christmas?

Well now my unemployed neighbor who was born in this country with limited skills can get a job to support his 80 year old mother instead of the illegal immigrants sucking off the tit of the United States and New York!!!!!

You mean they didn't check their status when they hired them in the first place? I had to produce proof of identity and citizenship.

It's about time employers took care of their fellow unemployed citizens. Shame on the Teamsters for pandering to illegal immigration. They sohuld put the needs of citizens first.

It is funny that the same people posting here are probably shopping at local supermarkets that hire illegal aliens. Let’s see how they will bitch when their local supermarket has to increase prices when its labor costs go up through the roof.

What people fail to understand is that the most affected by the anti-immigrant movement in this country will be the middle class. The rich will be able to absorb the higher costs. However, the two income families that have a nanny will feel the pain. That is not to mention the little luxuries that we as Americans are use to like having someone to cut your lawn, wash your car, eating out and so many other things that we take for granted.

There are American high school kids working at my supermarket.

Speculation and supply and demand make the prices go up!

"That is not to mention the little luxuries that we as Americans are use to like having someone to cut your lawn, wash your car, eating out and so many other things that we take for granted."

I used to make a TON of cash as a teenager mowing lawns, washing cars, gardening and even baby sitting. And I also worked at the local Waldbaums. And it wasn't that long ago cause I am only 40.

So what are saying is just an excuse.

every supermarket in Queens employs folks without papers--you may not see them, but they are there unloading trucks, stocking shelves, and working at night.

If we were to eject all the 'illegal immigrants' the cost of things like food would skyrocket. Personally, that doesn't bother me, but for lots of people it would really hurt.

This is why the government and the politicos won't ever get real about this--they would be signing up for a recession, and a big old mess.

Rather than talking wacked-out right-wing trash about people, commenters should take a moment to remember that we are all immigrants, and the frustration focused on today's immigrants is the product of other problems in our community and country.

That's pure BS
The illegal work force under cuts the low minimum wage of which a buisness owner pockets. The business owner still must compete with rivals in imaginative ways, this is a means to do nothing but keep wages low. For example in Middle Village where I shop Silver Barn has no illegals - none - nada, using local residents such as school age Mothers, highschool and college students and everyone else in between - all legal hardworking folks, getting a W2 each year. Go across the street to Met Food and you are in a different world - 60% of the staff are illegal - no W2, the rest are legal mostly highschool students. The differences are startling - at the Met I observe the illegals loudly howling at or drowling on our wives and girlfriends. Pity the poor highschool girl cashiers here. Silver Barn - is well managed - community oriented and are competively run buisness - the place is a gold mine. Thet beat the pants off Met food - everyone knows it. There are no illegals at the new Walgreens in the middle of both stores and never will be. The teens or older students in the area still cut grass, shovel snow and do odd jobs - no W2 but are willing and able - yes legal without a W2. In the coming recession (already here?) the illegals will be run out of town, maybe worse as they occupy jobs that can be done by our youngsters and some cases retirees. Who is fooling who - Nannies? Maybe in Manhattan this will be a hardship as Nannies are not affordable to the everyday Queens resident. Our own citizens and legal resident aliens have the right and first crack at and of any job in America especially to those who speak or try to speak English.

FRESH DIRECT is cooperating with the FEDS? More like the FEDS are bearing down hard to shut this operation down. They will lose most of their work force and close down or curtail their ability to function. Good for them - serves them right for breaking US laws and encouraging more illegal wetbacks to come to these parts.
Boycott this rotten foods outfit.

I welcome legal immigrants. Line cutters should be expelled and sent to the back of the line.

how much you get paid hourly at Waldbaums?

"how much you get paid hourly at Waldbaums?"

Enough to support myself. Not 5 kids with 2 more on the way and family back in the old country.

I know where you are going with this. Get real, minimum wage or lower is meant to support an individual, not a whole clan...
