can't believe they're going to go ahead and build this thing after all the community opposition. Just goes to show that they have zero respect for the neighborhood and its residents.
From this picture, it looks like a pretty tall apartment building is right nearby. Maybe this won't be so out of context as some claim.
The addition of Residence Halls on the St. John's campus has had a tremendous positive effect on the surrounding community. The businesses around the University would not survive if it wasn't for the students who pump thousands of dollars into them. Let's face it, we all moved here knowing that the University was here and we have to deal with it. Besides, why are so many people complaining when there are tall apartment buildings nearby? Let's stop portraying the students as "typical college students" because they aren't. Look into the records of other Universities and see that the problems that exist on and around the St. John's campus are minor when compared to them. I can see that the University tries its hardest to keep us happy but sometimes it has to make decisions like this. The community has changed and will continue to change for the better as the University grows!
It's surrounded by multi-level buildings all around! The residents act like this is some paradise they live in. Even Pete Hammil has commented on the fact that it is characteristic of New Yorkers to be able to move on and adapt to changes to their surroundings. It just seems like these residents just started a fight and they're too embarrased to back down after all the press they're getting. I had a great time at the winter concert (they gave it to the community FREE) and know my community would be nothing without SJU!

The area is zoned R1-2. Probably rezoned in response to those ugly monstrosities.

SJU is exploiting the community facilities provision of the zoning code which provides a loophole to allow a developer to build something out of compliance with the zoning. It's ludicrous that a dorm is considered to be a community facility. How does a dorm help the surrounding community? It only helps the school make money.

Hey my kid is going to St. Johns U in the fall, but if I were a resident I would fight this tooth and nail. One reason why my kid likes the School and so do I, is the fact the surrounding neighborhood is very attractive, quiet and most important safe. It will not be any of this things if the dorm construction proceeds as planned. Watch out folks SJU is taking a page from the buldozer ways of Columbia and NYU of destroying entire areas around them to grow and that is in Manhattan! Imagine how easy it is in Queens to find your property in an imminet domain situation?
