Big brother is watching

Landlords have but one way to legally hike the rent more than a token amount annually: Persuade a tenant to leave, or prove the tenant lives elsewhere. Tenants say the global real-estate firm Tishman Speyer, which bought the complex last year for $5.4 billion, is engaged in a campaign to do both.

Tenants: It's Like They're Spying on Us!

Over the past few months, hundreds of tenants say they received non-renewal notices on their leases over suspicions that they reside elsewhere for at least 183 days a year.

The charges are based on evidence apparently culled by private investigators, from public records, property deeds, and credit applications databases. Leaseholders were stunned by the scope of the information.

Personally, I don't understand why a select few individuals should be able to afford all that these people can afford, while the vast majority of middle class taxpayers have to struggle to make ends meet.

If the rent controlled tenant is not abusing the terms of the lease, they have no problem. I've worked some of these cases, as have many other investigators and I can tell you the abuse, particularly in Manhattan, is rampant.

What NYC needs is more responsible rent control not less! And it's time that we had a small business rent regulation program put into place!

I've "worked some of these cases" also.......on the tenants behalf !

Landlords will go to great lengths to ....sometimes....trump up a case against an RC tenant.

The landlord has deeper pockets while the renter has lower financial resources.....and guess who wins!

Cut the crap "ko"!

I'm not interested in a cyber "pissing" match...Suffice to say, the abuse runs both ways...Anyone who would think otherwise either has an agenda, or is just naive.
