Van Wyck revamp in the works

From the Queens Chronicle:

Plans call for widening the Van Wyck one lane in each direction. Fink said there is enough space available so that the state can avoid any private property. He did say that in some cases, where there is not enough room on a shoulder, the new lanes might have to run up against retaining walls for the service roads.

Fink said one of the challenges is that there are 20 bridges crossing the Van Wyck in that corridor, including four belonging to the Long Island Rail Road.

“We would have to reach out to them,” he said, as any widening of the roadway almost certainly would require work on railroad trestles. Fink said a federal environmental impact study should be completed by next September, with construction slated to run from August 2019 to the end of 2023.

Ok folks you really have to go to the full Chronicle article to get the whole story on this one, first to find our who Fink is

I'll help you out with that because most of you wont go to the article

"Harold Fink, deputy chief engineer from the state Department of Transportation, made his presentation at Borough Hall"

Ahhhhh Harold Fink made his presentation at Borough Hall....so who was there

"... Fink told the crowd, which included Borough President Melinda Katz, Councilman Barry Grodenchik (D-Oakland Gardens) and representatives of Queens’ 14 community boards."

Ok so the Borough President, the former Deputy Borough President, and handpicked minions of the County Machine

What do the plans call for

"Plans call for widening the Van Wyck one lane in each direction. Fink said there is enough space available so that the state can avoid any private property. He did say that in some cases, where there is not enough room on a shoulder, the new lanes might have to run up against retaining walls for the service roads."

When is this going to happen?

Fink said one of the challenges is that there are 20 bridges crossing the Van Wyck in that corridor, including four belonging to the Long Island Rail Road.

“We would have to reach out to them,” he said, as any widening of the roadway almost certainly would require work on railroad trestles. Fink said a federal environmental impact study should be completed by next September, with construction slated to run from August 2019 to the end of 2023.

Ok another study, that will cost another whopping $100 million

What does our Borough President think?
Katz was more interested in what the DOT could do in the short term to alleviate traffic tieups

What does our Borough President really think?
"The state is planning to bid the project out in sections, looking to issue design-build contracts." Melinda: Here's where I call Joe and see if I can get a few favors, we parse a few subcontracts out to some minority companies to keep them happy, and then get kickbacks through union contributions via a slush fund

There now you don't have to read the article

didn't they just get done adding lanes and new overpasses on the Van Wyck Parking lot?

A special lane for green, yellow and black cabs might be a better solution.

Driving has become a nightmare in NYC ! Even "sleepy" Bayside has terrible traffic at rush hour. Yesterday @3:30PM 221st Street was bumper to bumper from Northern Blvd to 36th Ave.
We are overdeveloped and over taxed in Queens while NYC gets transit improvements and the 421A tax abatement for millionaires !
