Vallone, Sr. vs Vallone, Jr.?

From the Daily News:

An isolated swath of Astoria that has largely been ignored by developers and businesses could soon undergo a major facelift under a proposal to erect seven waterfront residential towers and a supermarket.

The Lincoln Equities Group wants to create a project dubbed Hallets Point, with roughly 2,300 units of housing and a waterfront park along the East River near the Astoria Houses.

The public review process is expected to begin next year, city officials said.

“If done properly, it could provide new affordable residences to meet the growing demand of the neighborhood,” said state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria). It could also provide “services that that part of the neighborhood desperately needs.”

About 1,900 units would be market rate, city officials said. Another 400 will be reserved for affordable housing.

But not everyone expressed such enthusiasm for the project.

City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Astoria), whose father, the former Council Speaker, is a consultant for the developer, said he is on the fence about it.

Vallone said he would like to see more businesses and amenities move into the community. But “something that big is going to put a drain on the resources of that neighborhood,” he said.

Wow, has that boy found religion? He's suddenly against 40-story towers along the shore? Does anyone really think he's going to battle his pop?

I'll leave the last word to Curbed:

I can't imagine who the *hell* would want to live in that miserable desolate neighborhood. There's a lot more crap there than they're planning to build over. The projects are, well, the projects, and some 5-year-old was shot there a week or so ago. And if that water taxi doesn't pan out, it's a long, miserable, infrequent ride on the Q102 bus to get back to civilization.

I can't imagine who the *hell* would want to live in that miserable desolate neighborhood. Agreed!

Go buy a condo where in the summer you walk past folks "yO yO yOing your litle daughter or your FOXY wife " on her her way home - Yuk Yuk Yuk!!!

Full of auto part places, greasy shops with Mexicans swarming the place - it one giant cesspool that towers won't necessarily shoo away - YEP Projects - they affect private real estate rents or values in Manhttan when close by. Astoria will be no different - in fact the valuations for these proposed developments will come in very low and banks will be hard pressed to lend for them.

La Famiglia Di Vallone sure has no class.

This political mob which was started by Charlie "the judge" Vallone...sons and grandsons alike...will persistently attempt to slide their hands under any political skirt they can find...and violate any nabe while promising that nabe everything..."marriage" not included.

What a slimy pack of goombahs!

Is your nabe the next to be raped?

Don Paulo has eyes on northeast Queens.

Too bad Don "junior" Pietro didn't stick to his (LOL) rock (garage) band.

Now he's playing Astoria like a beat up musical instrument.

Let's face it...the Vallones are vampires unfit to hold any other job but lobbyist/politician!

They'll just suck your district dry!

H-m-m-m....
wasn't it Vallone and Apelian last time around?

Didn't CB 7's"follow the buck" Chuck get some nice printing contracts in Paul Vallone's last city council race when he "advised" him?

at least they don't have a relationship like toby and evan stavisky which could read about on queens-politics.com

Unfortunately, there will always be idiot buyers who see 10 sq ft of granite countertop and large windows that have been improperly capped and will leak within 3 years and they forget everything else. Sure, the credit crunch has put many of them in check but there will always be sheep to be sheared. The funniest part is when they try to have a kid in their 'hot new nabe' and they start to realize how bad the schools actually are...

Hipster and yuppie chum for the project sharks. Unless they demolish the Astoria houses and displace the denizens.....er, residents, this will be a bloodbath.

How appropriate where this little expensive hell-on-earth, next to the crime-ridden projects, is located: Hellgate !

And they say real estate is location, location, location.

1. This is not the full plan - the ENTIRE waterfront will have 40 story towers.

2. 5,000 units that will soon become 6,000, - 7,000 units.

3. what is a unit - 1,3,5 + people? we are talking about 40,000 people.

4. 1 hospital when there was 3, overflowing sewage plants, and an electric grid that is, well .... (and lets keep quiet the steam plant explosion a few weeks ago)

5. one road in and out. Astoria is already gridlocked.

6. schools in shifts

The spread the ice cream money around the projects - you will get a supermaket - you will get blah blah blah - and like Suma did at the Queensbridge to justify his landgrab, had a weinie roast.

Ladies and Gentlemen, New York's first "banlieues" - the Arab and Black housing projects and slums that ring Paris.

No wonder the Astoria houses were not evacuated during the hurricane, were people endangered to put a crimp in this plan?

ah, but their scenery is not blocked - just talk to the people in LIC or Dutch Kills on the validity of those promises.

The Vallones could care less which neighborhood they scam and screw. Old Pete just finished Jammin'
Whitestone with a new developement plan they don't need. This, after he "cleaned up" the Brownfield site that it will be situated on. Best thing for Queens, keep the Vallone bums out of public office!

Anonymous said...

The Vallones continue to run for office so they can line their family pockets and grow the Vallone bank account. Meanwhile they screw each neighborhood they "represent."

Watch out Whitestone, Bayside, Little Neck, and Douglaston! Little bald-headed Paulie Vallone wants to bring the Vallone developer syndicate to Northeast Queens to make Daddy Valone millions and destroy our community.

DON'T LET THE VALLONES TAKEOVER AND DESTROY NORTHEAST QUEENS!

The End of NYC said...

Its more than the Vallones.

Every newspaper in Queens will pull for this.

Every politican will pull for this (especially east Queens will NOT want this in their backyard)

This is part of the Mayor's 2030 plan for a million people that everyone just rolled over and played dead on.

The community board?

Unlike the rest of the city where this would be fought at the grass roots, there is no credible civic in that part of Queens that will stand up to this.

The locals have heard a prodevelopment drumbeat for decades, and have never made the simple connection between linking development and infrastructure.

Hallets Cove is NYC of tomorrow. As someone said, it will be "banlieues."

Look up the word and weep.

I anticipate within the next 5-10 the projects all along the waterfront will be destroyed. That land is a developers dream and well frankly the tenants there do not matter one bit. They do not pay taxes and are parasites. Damn that Moses for putting the projects along the waterfront.

Vallone is our only hope against Parkside and the Stavisky faction. They have already taken over Queens with the fusion of the lobbyist and political consultant firm into an archetype of government corruption. There's no developer syndicate as one anonymous commenter said. Neighborhoods haven't been screwed. That's crafted silly nonsense.

The upper right corner of the map shows "Whitey Ford Field". Where exactly did Whitey Ford live in Astoria? Anyone know?

Myth
I anticipate within the next 5-10 the projects all along the waterfront will be destroyed.

FACT
99 YEAR LEASE - THEY WILL BE AROUND A FEW MORE DECADES - THEN WHAT - GOT SOME MORE CRONIES OF THE SHAH, LATIN AMERICAN DRUG LORDS, RUSSIAN SMUGGLERS AND CHINESE MANDERINS TO MAKE CITIZENS FOR DEVELOPMENT MONEY SO THEY CAN DISPLACE AMERICAN CITIZENS?

Myth
That land is a developers dream and well frankly the tenants there do not matter one bit.

REALITY
YOU ARE AN ASS. THE ENTIRE COUNTRY IS TURNING ITS WATERFRONT OVER TO THE COMMUNITIES (NOTE CORLEARS HOOK PARK IN MANHATTAN) AND WE TURN OURS OVER TO LOW LIFES THAT EXCLUDE THE COMMUNITY TO A BUNCH OF FOREIGN DESPOTS THAT RAPED THEIR COUNTRIES AND TRUST FUND BABIES. NICE CROWD YOU RUN AROUND WITH.

Myth
They do not pay taxes and are parasites.

REALITY
MOMS AND DADS AND VETERANS AND TAX PAYERS AND PEOPLE THAT WILL WIPE YOUR ARSE WHEN YOU ARE IN SOME NURSING HOME WHILE YOUR SNOOKY OFFSPRING PISS AWAY THE MONEY.

Myth
Damn that Moses for putting the projects along the waterfront.

REALITY
THEY WERE PUT THERE BECAUSE THE WATERFRONT WAS BROWNFIELDS AND THE RIVERS WERE OPEN SEWERS. MOSES AND HOUSING? READ THE POWER BROKER - HE GOT MIXED UP WITH THE MACHINE AND HONEST GRAFT.

(Didn't work up a sweat)

Yea ... sure ... and you can sit in my front room with a drink and cigar and I can open up my curtains and give you a free show in the hotel room a few feet from my house.

My friend, THAT'S silly nonsense.

Anonymous said...

Nonsense?

Gianaris is in this - the same guy that egged people to threaten Con Ed workers - some who were their neighbors in Astoria - and said nothing that utility bills were paying for waterfront development which had no blackouts.

Now he wants to add 1000s more.

Where are the schools, hospitals, sewage plants? Why are they spending all their time on this shit when the neighborhood had growing unmet needs?

Anonymous said...

George, the biggest issue here is where Whitey Ford lived?

You must be a local community board member.

Anonymous said...

He lived with his grandmother for a while on 43 Street between 34 and 35 Avenue.

georgetheatheist said...

Fascinating. I never knew exactly where Whitey Ford lived, right around the corner from the Queens Gazette. Strange though you never see Whitey Ford come back to pay a visit to Astoria like Tony Bennett does periodically. Also interesting that the Whitey Ford Field on the East River is a world away from where he lived with his grandmother, as you say, way east on 43rd Street. And what's up with living with his grandmother? His mother and father got divorced, died, or abandoned him? Who told you that that was where he lived? He said this himself somewhere? A reference would be very much appreciated. And when did he live in Astoria? At what age? Where did he go to school? Thanks.

Look closely. They actually want to shore horn buildings between the projects!

This will be NY's first "Bidonville"

Maybe they just want to build a fence and wall the peninsula off - sort of like a mini-"Escape from NY" set.

No facilities, in the middle of no-where, I cannot believe the community would stand for this.

It has to be a joke.

Anonymous said...

No joke

- and it is already all but approved by CB1, the "community board from hell."

Wikipedia says he went to Aviation High School. Is that a fact? Did he go to Astoria lower grade schools? If so where? Also, the Tribune, in their Famous Queens Residents says he lived in Little Neck. No mention of Astoria. This Whitey Ford is a very mysterious character. Don't you think so as well?

Anonymous said...

According to this:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fordwh01.shtml

Whitey went to Manhattan Aviation High School (as did Billy Loes of the Dodgers. Did the whole place move to Long Island City?

Great place for the library board of developers to put in another mysterious $30 million children's center now that they are erasing any evidence of Carnegie Libraries with Astoria's now on the block.

Cannot have the public see anything about 'giving back' to a community.

Ce-ment trumps books any day in Queens and that's the lesson the little tykes need to learn anywho.

Why stop at $30 - make it $40 mill, make it $50 mill - make it a Roman Triumph!
