AM-NY's crappy apartment series continues

Cindy Gatto thought she had found an amazing deal when she saw a listing for a one-bedroom apartment in Astoria renting for just $650. The place was by no means immaculate, but with a little elbow grease, she figured she could make it shine.

Instead, Gatto found herself living in one Crappy Apartment.

Fixing up a "Crappy" Apartment

A case in point: the apartment above them has a leaky radiator. Instead of repairing or replacing it, workers merely patched up the rotted floorboards, which were sagging into Gatto's living room, she said. Each winter the radiator turns on and begins to leak again, and her ceiling begins to crack once more. This has been going on, Gatto said, for the entire 11 years she has lived in the apartment.

Look with the cheap crap they are building in Astoria, they are turning it into a slum.

They dont put money into buildings and illegal conversions is sacred policy.

Only a fool would invest on Ditmars.

Sometimes when the try to fix up the apartment, the solution is just as bad as the original problem.

A lot of people in this community of Astoria don't have the foggiest notion of taste.

My kitchen has 10 types of tile.

I like the tasteful treatment of stone. Someone should walk around Astoria with a camera.

When they got here 30 years ago, they inherited a beautiful community.

Now they transformed into a joke. And the sorriest thing is when you try to talk to them, they are totally ignorant on what they are doing and get self-rightous.

Really? Becuase if she has been having this problem for the 11 years that she has lived there, most likely, this is not a newer building. Older buildings have their problems too, that is why so many of the older buildings around NY are being torn down. This landlord wont fix the problem, obviously because her rent is pretty low, and wants her to move out. If he sold the building it would probably cost more to fix the years of neglect rather than build something new in its place.

My Question is....why would you live there for 11 years if it is such a dump?? Why hasnt she reported this problem to the building department. Trust me..if she complains, they will issue sitations to the landlord.

And to you...I have to say this... Why should the landlord bother spending more money making everything match. Apparently there is someone who looks past the ugliness of 10 different types of tile and pays money to live there. I would never do this, but someone rented it right?

Kein Cross? WTF kinda name is that? Interior Designer-Contractor-Problem Solver. He forgot "Bullshit Artist". Hey 36-year old tenant lady, who ya gonna listen to? Some asshole wearing an oversized condom on his head or...

Me?

Get 1/4 inch plywood panels and hammer that down over the crappy tongue and groove flooring. Then go to Home Depot and get some nice self-sticking 1 foot square tiles. Bingo your floor is finished. Be sure to put the tiles down after you do any sanding of the ceiling. The sanding is a mess. You may want to put plastic sheeting over your doors and large furniture items that can't be taken out of the room to be sanded. You said the upstairs leaking radiator is an ongoing problem. Asks the cats upstairs if the leak in the radiator has been fixed so that you don't paint and then the water drips again. BTW you really want to put on a ceiling a color called "Mannikin Creme"? And don't paint your floors Acquamarine.

Kein Cross go fuck yourself.

Alas.....Astoria has become
the dumping ground of Queens.

It's where "illegals" abound.....
and well built homes get torn down!

Sleep well.... Mr. Delis.....
and don't let the bed bugs bite you !

Really? Last time I was on the train coming into and out of Astoria, it wasnt filled with illegals. AND, if persistant 11 year leaky ceilings constitute well built homes....then I say they should be torn down, because it must have more problems than that!!

Why on God's green earth would you not report it? Call 311 and report it. A DOB inspector shows up, takes note, send the violation to the LL. I had that done twice. I told my LL 3 times what issues I had, he ignored me eavery time so I called the DOB and everything was fixed a week later. What is the big deal?

Yeah.....
ask all those greedy sour faced Greek landlords
renting out basement apartments to "extended families"
if their tenants have green cards !

Hey bub.....
there are TWO faces of Astoria.......
the hipsters and the illegal aliens !

as reported in the mainstream media last year.....
Astoria has the highest infestation
of BEDBUGS in Queens!

Any of you hipster/yuppies have this problem ?

Sorry....it must be the Mexican population
closer to the water around Astoria Blv'd !

Come'on guys - she's living there 11 years already - what's up with that?

There's got to be more to this story. Why would you live in crap for 11 years - 11 months maybe - but, 11 years?

This is the same woman who owned the Mud Pit in NYC. She most likely wasn't paying her rent like she screwed everyone out of money when she abruptly shut Mud Pit. No shock the landlord didn't fix anything he was probably trying to drive her out!
