City planners have crafted a new Forest Hills District to help the shopper's mecca keep its small-town feel and stave off overdevelopment.
Local officials and residents, worried that the western part of Austin St. near Yellowstone Blvd. is especially vulnerable, have been lobbying for the zoning changes.
Currently, developers can seek waivers from those zoning restrictions and build large commercial and residential structures.
For example, developer Yeheskel Elias once considered building a 15-story, 100-room luxury hotel at Austin St. and 70th Road. That plan would require a waiver.
"It's really important for me to keep Austin St. low density," said Katz, who grew up in Forest Hills. "The nice part is you can walk up and down and you don't have really tall buildings there."

The truth is the buildings should be allowed to go up just a little higher in order to attract better retailers.
Remember, this isn't Rodeo Drive we're talking about - its Austin Street. Having been there on Saturday and seeing the situation first hand, this strip needs some development. The mom and pop shops are selling junk to the Annie Sez crowd. Is there where Mindy shops?

Exactly. This is why Atlas Park is kicking the sh1t out of Austin/Continental in terms of attracting higher-end tenants. Too much of that subway/Value Depot riffraff on Austin/Continental.
Anything to preserve the investment in our homes and neighborhood is a good thing. How could it be otherwise?
First thing in order to clean up Forest Hills is get rid of all the Bukharis.

Melinda has always been an against overdevelopment in the "Austin St." area for years, back when she was a State Assemblywoman.
She is just ok with overdevelopment that is not in her district.
Too little too late.
