Downtown Jamaica's Court of Crap

Here's what they're gonna do to the old Jamaica Family Courthouse:

Developments already planned for downtown Jamaica

It looks like the building ran into the glass menagerie and came out the other side...

Yikes!

69 "luxury" apartments and 54 "low-income" apartments and every class in between.

I can't wait to read about the fisticuffs on the rooftop, in the rec rooms and parking spaces over building privileges.

afraid to critisize building for fear of being found out and sentenced to another jury duty stint.

So let me say instead that:

I LOVE THIS PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT!!!
IT LOOKS SO...SHINY.

Justice stinks in Queens...
so why not also the courthouse? !!!

Looks like future plans for the Sohmer Piano factory and the Steinway Mansion.

Now you know why the only want to landmark fire plugs in Queens.

They don't have far to go for the trial.

Hmmm, why don't they build extra stories on a funeral home, then when you die, they can just plop you on the elevator for a quick ride to the basement.

Think of other ideas! Adding housing can make any plot of land a cost center and generate revenue - Crappie should do renderings of housing, say at the Statue of Liberty, City Hall etc ete.

So what should they do with the building? Let it sit and rot? I would think you would be happy that they are maintaining the existing exterior architecture. We should also be happy that people want to invest millions into this area. I know it is extremely easy for many of you to complain, but could you add some reasoning behind your complaints and possibly provide intelligent alternatives? You might be taken more seriously if you do so.

Why not turn it into an athletic center like Lost Battalion Hall or museum? The Government owns it! There's no excuse.

WHY DO WE ALWAYS HAVE TO DO 'SOMETHING WITH A BUILDING?' LIKE A KID WITH A CAKE IN THE FRIDGE, YOU DEVELOPERS ALWAYS FEEL THE NEED TO GET INTO TROUBLE EVERYTIME TO THINK THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD BUILD BUILD.

I would think you would be happy that they are maintaining the existing exterior architecture. We should also be happy that people want to invest millions into this area.

WHY DOES YOU MAKING MONEY (WHILE MY SERVICES SUCK) MAKE ME HAPPY? A DEVELOPER WHO WANTS TO MAKE MONEY DOES NOT MAKE ME HAPPY. THE FACT THAT I GOT TO PAY MORE TAXES TO SUPPORT HIS IDEA TO MAKE MONEY MAKES ME UNHAPPY. I WANT MY EARNINGS TO GO TO MY CHILDREN, NOT HIS WHORE OR HIS OVER THE TOP LIFE STYLE.

I know it is extremely easy for many of you to complain, but could you add some reasoning behind your complaints and possibly provide intelligent alternatives?

OVERTAXED INFRASTRUCTURE IS A START. WHAT THE HELL IS 'WRONG' WITH AN AREA THAT IS ALREADY BUILT UP?

You might be taken more seriously if you do so.

DON'T WORRY, WE ARE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY, IN FACT, MORE SERIOUSLY EACH DAY. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY ARE THE ONES THAT PLAY NICE.

Right on.

The Jamaica Family Court House was originally designed to be a library. It was indeed too small to adequately handle the huge amount of ever growing miserable litigants that came through its doors on a daily basis. But why not build a structure that complements the surrounding architecture? Long-time Queens residences have long respected the past and put a very high value on
preserving its history in keeping with modern demands.

But we do not count anymore - that's evident everywhere in our rapidly changing borough.

This cold institutional type of style is actually more fitting I guess with the corruption that is going on in there. Miserable litigants, but very happy divorce hacks and matrimonial judges with ties to some of our most corrupt whore developers.

Never seen anything so "harmonious!" It's a marriage made in hell. The style is "unconstitutional architecture."

Heh Heh . . . .good one!

And since we are on the topic of court renovations – why not spend money on security cameras in all courtrooms? Now there’s our taxpaying dollars going to good use. The public wants them – but, not the officers of the court. No, too much I guess going on inside that they do not want recorded.

Also, all big businesses today have a fraud department to cut down on unethical wheeling and dealing – not so our court system. If you think you are being defrauded by an attorney or two, or that a judge didn't do the right thing, you have to complain to the Attorney Disciplinary Committee – which basically is a committee made up of other attorneys. Of course, they say they are non-bias, but the general public is a little skeptical to say the least.

Anyway, the building is ugly and what’s going on inside – uglier.

The Marshall Crap Plan said...

We should all thank Borough President Helen Marshall for the building mess in Queens. She has no taste whatsoever in architecture... just look at the shithole they call Queens borough hall.

Under Marshall's watch Queens has more building violations, abuses and ugly architecture than the rest of New York and New Jersey combined.

She has been asleep at the wheel since being elected.

This was designed decades before - 30s - 40s - its boring bland architecture the product of the brain dead party hacks who were the boro leaders even at that time.

The real problem of boro hall is how filthy it is, not just a grey film over everything, but cobwebs on the damn stairs, for heavens sake!

That do-do bird's nest hairdo on the Beep's head

Wadda ya expect....a degree in architecture from Columbia!

She's the Dem machine's doofus ......
a sock puppet and a house slave
of the real estate mobsters!

Hey Hellen.....big hair went out with Flo's diner!

Why are our public buildings being given away to developers? Why not turn a former courthouse into a school for aspiring lawyers?

It would address school overcrowding and inspire students seeking a career in law.

As for the current Central Library, it's an example of 1960s Boring Modernism. Hopefully, it will soon be given a nicer glass-and-steel replacement like the one in Flushing.

I liked the old, one-story Flushing Library with its enclosed rustic courtyard. It had a homey feel, unlike its skyscrapper replacement that's always mobbed with loafers.

Mazeartist....you a-maze me!

I've been reading your posts and am forced to conclude that at times I cannot follow your reasoning
or some of your more simplistic suggestions.

The world certainly does not need more lawyers .....
like Rockaway Beach doesn't need more sharks.
"Aspiring lawyers".....puh-leeze?
I 'm not as optimistic as you are.....sorry.....my fault.

But I fully agree with you....
I too am sick of seeing our classic fine old
public buildings being
dropped into the hands of greedy developers.

The little architectural touch of the new building
(right behind the courthouse)
scooping onto the court's roof plane
is a tacky attempt to integrate the new and the old.

The whole mess looks like a nightmare collage
which has been haphazardly mismatched at
every possible point!

Guess what? I'm a law student, and proud of it. Your bigoted remarks against my profession only show your envy. The high academic standards, amount of work, and years of study that we put into our career show only a select few are cut our for this job.

it's hard to have any respect for law laborers these days with clowns like judge judy and that mathias character making a mockery of the profession by turning their courtrooms into 3-ring circuses.

When you get out of school, and into the real world, you will find the public's perception of your profession one step above use car salesmen.

Check out congress - full of lawyers - and not held in particularly high esteem.

Hey "law student"......I'm a shark ......
and will be glad to extend you
professional courtesy any time !

If you don't like my "bigoted remarks" law student.....

What law school do you attend........
University of Timbuktu ?

C-mon fella.....with all your "legal studies'......you've got time to trawl the blogs?

Who are you kidding.

Oh.....my mistake.....maybe you're Mr. La Crappa

Is it that high?

To the law student who believes that those of us who do not like lawyers are envious of them:

I hate to break this to you Grasshopper, but lawyers are among the most unethical professionals in America. There might be more disbarred and suspended attorneys than there are practicing ones. And those are the ones that get caught.

More and more people today are representing themselves in court thanks to all the info on the internet - case law, statutes, etc. can be found easily and quickly. Filing motions – a piece of cake. What lawyers do is not brain surgery. The mystique of the law is yesteryear. Because of all the corruption, the public is fearful of the courts – not the law – but the officers of the court. Don’t mistake sincere revulsion for envy.

Get over yourself. The only person who is going to put you on a pedestal is your mother.

Remember the lawyers in Bowne House took $thousand of dollars and did nothing, treating it like a joke.

The house suffered a decade and was taken over the city as a result.

The underlying issues unresolved and someday, like a body buried in the meadowlands, will resurface.

"The underlying issues unresolved and someday, like a body buried in the meadowlands, will resurface."

Amen.

People involved in these dirty dealings think that they are smarter than the public. On the contrary though the public is very educated today and quite impassioned about controlling corruption.

Those of us who have a quest for their own monetary gain and not for the betterment of our society beware. There are also those of us who have a quest for exposing the truth, and who believe that to ignore all the wheeling and dealing is to endorse it.

family couRt is absolutely nothing more than a socialist ,kangaroo court system,if you don't believe me than ask someone that's been through it. tearing that building down and erecting a new one will never change a thing.
they stink out loud.

I've been through it, and I believe you - a kangaroo court is exactly what the Queens Family Court is (in my opinion).

The matrimonial divorce hacks control it all - the judges are used as their puppets for the most part.

For example, we had two payment ledgers running simoultaneously for one child. One curiously stopped which amounted to quite an enormous amount of arrears. When discovered and challenged, the lawyer said that it was just a "mistake". Duplicate ledgers are a red flag of fraud in business - but not so in our courts.

But there were many many other "errors" that we had caught. Too many errors are yet another red flag of fraud - but not so in our courts.

Queens Family Court is one place you want to stay away from.
