Building up Hunters Point

With its historic residential character, rich cultural insti- tutions, easy access to the East River waterfront and close proximity to Midtown Manhattan, the Hunters Point District has emerged as one of the most popular residential neighborhoods in New York City.

Hunters Point Skyline Gets Additions

Yes, except that developments such as the one this press release is about are destroying the Hunters Point District!

"historic residential character"

as you said, that won't be a selling point for much longer.

The historic center of Hunters Point is getting ripped out.

Suggested putting a application for a LIC historic district, the locals thought is was a swell idea ... until it was suggested THEY put it together.

Still waiting to hear back from them. No problem. Maybe those same folks that get in a lather over the Domino plant can step in. Still waiting ...

Well, you can always grumble. Its costs nothing and gives you the impression that you are not entirely a doormat....

Sounds like the stuff for several local western Queens blogs.

I hardly think that building beautiful luxury condominium buildings that will lead to an influx of the best and the brightest to the area, and more and better retail, dining and community businesses and developments constitutes "destroying the Hunters Point District". Especially since these new luxury buildings are replacing dreary unused industrial factories and warehouses.

"these new luxury buildings are replacing dreary unused industrial factories and warehouses."

As well as one and 2 family houses, the historic Hackett building, the historic powerhouse....etc.

You hear that? I suppose we're nothing more than working class trash who are expected to clear out so our "betters" can brighten up the community.

When they say historic residential character, I think they mean that one block of rowhouses that was landmarked. Everything else around it is gonna go soon.

exactly---that or some kind of tourist attractions...the natives.
ya know, after being tossed outta HellsKitchen back in the late seventies due to gentrification, and now witnessing the bs here in astoria/lic vicinity,i'm seriously considering going commie.
where are we supposed to go NOW ?
I'd rather look at those dreary old factory buildings than the newly arrived gentry.THEY really think they are doing us a favor by moving in here, driving up the rents...and then moving the hell out as soon as they procreate or get mugged. lic/astoria is simply a chapter in their grunge years.

Sounds like a developer's pimp who's posting to me !

Clearing out the "trashy working class"
sounds a lot like the Bloomberg plan to me !

The creation of the Master Wealthy Race of NYC.

"lead to an influx of the best and the brightest to the area"

As the first zionists wrote back to their backers in Europe, 'we love this land but she already is married to the Palestinians.'

There is a community that is being displaced, you bum. They are voters, taxpayers and veterans.

They are American citizens and their taxes are not being used to improve their lives, but to displace them, steal their waterfront, etc etc etc.

It seems to be a little late
for the old Hunters Point to survive.

The wolf is not only at the door
but it looks like he's alreadygot half of your leg
in its mouth.

Residents' complacency over the years
is also partially responsible for what's going on now.......I'm sorry to have to say.

I agree with the last anonymous posting. I'm a lifelong resident of LIC and every time there was talk about this type of stuff happening, the majority of homeowners and residents (including myself at times) did anything about it besides complain. I'm more concerned with the effect of all this development–which seems to be happening ALL at ONCE–is going to have on sewers, schools, transportation etc. It seems like the only thing the DOB, the mayor and developers thought of was how to erect the ugliest buildings possible.

What makes people think they are entitled to rent in LIC only at rates they can afford, an no one else should be allowed to move into the area? Why to some people think that the city government should for some reason require that old, unused dumpy industrial buildings should be maintained as is so that the neighborhood can't be changed? If you never bought your residence, your rent is subject to changes in the marketplace. This is part of living in a free society. People are not guaranteed a permanent place to live in whatever neighborhood they choose. Thankfully, the city is fostering great changes in LIC.

The city intentionally gentrified the area by changing the zoning. That's a lot different than rents going up naturally.

Hey nitwit, they are American citizens and have every right to expect from THEIR community what THEY want.

You think you know better? Who the f*k died and left you in charge?

"The city is fostering great changes in LIC".

So that's what they're calling DRIVING people
out from their homes in the nabe....."FOSTERING".

Are we to become like foster children ......
residents displaced?

You arrogant roach !

Go and say a prayer and humble yourself
before your Creator.
You just spit in G-d's face....not a wise thing !
