Watch out for cyclists! (They'll run right into you)

From CBS:

Recent complaints suggest that New York City’s bike riders have gone rogue.

With violations on the rise, some bikers have been caught running read lights and in some cases running over people.

Dash cam video from a recent incident shows a mother pushing a baby carriage in a Brooklyn crosswalk when a man on a bike comes out of nowhere and races through a red light, crashing into the woman and her child.

Fortunately they were able to walk away.

“This happens on a daily basis,” Williamsburg resident Gary Schlesinger said. “Obviously bikers don’t feel the law applies to them.”

Technically he didn't race through the red light, he stopped in the crosswalk.

The women did not look to her left. I know she had the right of way but WTF she pushed her baby out into a busy city street without looking both ways.

Drivers and cyclists commit road rage all the time.

If bicycles are allowed to ride on the road and now have their own lanes they should be required to have registration with a license plate, insurance so that if they hit someone like above it is covered, and some sort of license to ride.

Its been getting bad all over the city with bikes, they are just doing whatever they want with no consequences.

" they should be required to have registration with a license plate". .. That's right, give the City a chance to get their hands on some more of out money with another DMV like agency. I worry more about stopping the unlicensed, unregistered and uninsured motorists that are running rampant in this city. They can cause some real damage.

A good 1/3 of these jerkoffs on bikes are illegals illiterate in any language. These people dont obey laws, cant even read street signs and abuse our freedoms.
Too add, because of the dozens of sanctuary city protections they dont give a shit about breaking the law. The law is a joke to them.
Sad but yes, make registrations, license plates and insurance mandatory. Only when people, police and traffic cameras can ID these scofflaws will this shit stop. Likely overnight in this case.

I'm not for more police state government controls but this is a situation where it is needed. I got into streetfight with one of these scumbag bike messengers grabbing on to my door handle and hitching a ride last year. (they can sue YOU if they go under the wheel or cause an accident btw) It cost me near $250 to register my SUV, meanwhile I must share the roads with this garbage, not only using the roads for free, but under 100% anonymity too break traffic laws and cause accidents without penalty?

"...some bikers have been caught running read lights..."

NO! They wouldn't do that. Bikers are progressive thinkers who always obey traffic laws and are thoroughly safe on all streets. It is the pedestrians who are the danger. Imagine taking a child out onto city streets? They are a menace to society and should be forced by the legislature to carry liability insurance!

Bike 'crime' relative to car crime and danger is an absolute joke .Yes the entitled attitude is obnoxious and yes some cyclists cause dangerous situations but there is no comparison between the danger of a bike and the danger of a car. The boomer-tier response 'license and insure them like cars' is just foolish sounding.
Get nyc's drivers in line, actually hand out speeding tickets and red light tickets instead of rent seeking parking fines, and once that danger is mitigated turn your attention to bad cyclists. Being resentful of someone's virtue signaling hipster lifesystle choice is no excuse for ignoring the much bigger problem of killer cars .

No comment from Daniel Solow, Laura Shepard, Peter Beadle and other Queens bike advocates. They're too busy documenting motorists who violate rules.

This news segment is so brief it doesn't do the issue of arrogant bikers violating traffic regulations justice. But it does show 2 good examples

The first 2 anons come off like the Transportation Alt apologists. He stopped in the crosswalk because the dumbshit crashed into the carriage. Seeing the footage, the biker had a good few seconds to slow down, which is what you are supposed to do when approaching a steady red or when a pedestrian is crossing in the crosswalk. The selfish dick obviously wasn't paying attention.

The second dick was a shithead. What about that sign on that school bus didn't he or she understand. Childrens crossing takes precedence over all traffic, vehicular and bicycle. That fucker did not even slow down, he or she is lucky that person didn't call the cops, because if that was a motorcycle rider he or she definitely would have got the cuffs slapped on them for vehicular recklessness or more likely vehicular manslaughter.

Considering the location for this segment, this does not surprise me one bit, being a bike commuter all my life. I used to ride to work every day and enjoy it but now that enjoyment has been sapped because there are way too many people. The bike lanes the city installed are now not ample enough for riding without worrying about some Lance Armstrong wannabe or some hipshit coming from Soulcycle or some alley cat racer whizzing by you without warning. The same with the bridges too, way too overcrowded. And also the goddamn SChitibikers. Everyone I seen riding these retard bikes are always blowing the lights, it's like these dicks used to be the ones driving recklessly in their cars now suddenly feel liberated.

And this is only going to get worse and will certainly lead to fatalities now that electronic motor bikes (or as they are commonly known, MOTORCYCLES) are widespread because of the over-saturation and non-regulation of food app delivery companies. And now these motorcycles are being pushed for another bike share format and for regular sales for people despite it's supposed illegal status for street riding. These motorcycles are capable of going 25 to 30 mph and their users, food app delivery people (most who do not speak English or are just plain defiant assholes) daily run reds, ride the wrong way, ride on the sidewalk and menacingly run up on standard legal bicycle riders. Someone will eventually get killed by one of these things.

I don't agree with insuring bikes, that's extreme. And a license to ride is not logical because you learn first learn to ride when you are four. Businesses utilizing bikes already issue plates and i.d's for their workers. Just for the law to be enforced, going after true violators and not setting up lame traps to fill quotas and for people just to use common sense and consideration when they ride. But it's not going to happen because setting up traps is easy and also that the app food industry and bikeshares have become a major part of this city's economy and sending cops to enforce the law on these particular groups.

I await the report about these fucking motorized skateboard commuters. These are probably the biggest dicks on the street right now.

Register, road test, insure, license all if you over 18 years of age .And most important of all ENFORCEMENT... Lets see how dedicated the bike maggots are to their "Transportation Alternative" when they're held accountable.

Correction on last paragraph:

But it's not going to happen because setting up traps is easy and also that the app food industry and bikeshares have become a major part of this city's economy and sending cops to enforce the law on these particular groups will be a major inconvenience on these demos, the bikeshare rider and the listless wasteful spending consumers that can't cook for themselves.

"Being resentful of someone's virtue signaling hipster lifestyle choice is no excuse for ignoring the much bigger problem of killer cars".

That's some gross generalization of cars there. Cars don't kill people, the idiot selfish drivers of them do. More alt-transport agitprop. Although I do concur about a hipster lifestyle choice being having the impunity to run red lights with your bike.

Just because no one has died from a bike accident recently doesn't mean it won't happen at all. The reason why we have regulations and laws is to prevent potential problems from becoming bigger and fatal ones.

isn't it true that this "administration" is looking to pass law to relax the requirements of what traffic signals bike riders no longer have to heed?

Anonymous said...

This used to happen to me a lot when I worked on the upper east side. Every morning, some idiot cyclists would almost run me over. These bike lanes are more dangerous than anything else! They are such a waste of space if you ask me.

The VIOFO A119 or A119S, both are very good for the price. I have the A119. Keep in mind that no dash cam (at least not yet) can clearly capture the license plate of a moving car a night time, but you will get a good overall video from it.

For me, a dash cam is 100% more important than having insurance (don't worry, I have both), specially in NYC. Avoid the he said/she said situation, worth every penny.

OK, calm down to those who think anyone is trying to make comparisons. Good grief, obviously cars will do more damage and are far more dangerous than bikes. I'm a motorist, a cyclist, and a pedestrian. I need my car to get to work because I have to leave the city (no public transportation where I work, sadly), but I have had to drive through here on occasion. I see cyclists break rules all the time and nearly run over a pedestrian or into a car or almost get hit because some don't stop for a light and a car is going. The movement often makes demands on motorists and for lanes. I suppose the issue is that if they're going to have laws that benefit them, they should all abide by them, too.

Anonymous said...

The real purpose of bike lanes is for emergency response vehicles to be able to get through NYC's traffic jams due to overbuilding.
Our city is choking on these mega monsters and an infrastructure that's 80 behind the times.

Anonymous said...

To the people saying bikes dont hurt people like cars do, thats incorrect. I know people who have been hit by bikes speeding down the street and have been knocked down with broken bones and bruises.

Very rarely do cars blast through red lights, but bicycles do all the time. I'm all for more bicycle tickets, I think they are worse then the cars!

Bikes are the modern sacred cows. You are not allowed to criticize the aggressive, reckless riding bikers so often do, and you are not allowed to bring up the empty dedicated bike lanes when discussing the causes of traffic congestion in NYC. You get immediately attacked and labelled as being a reactionary, nature incinerating car driving criminal. We need license plates on ALL BIKES! We all pay taxes for God's sake!

georgetheatheist said...

Thanks for that dashcam recommendation. I'm now hankerin' to get one.

Go to any community board meeting where 'transportation alternatives' shows uup, and you'll see some serious frothing at the mouth lunatic extremists. They literally yell at people who don't want bike lanes in their community that we are killing them.

Their radical, special interest agenda is to create entirely car-free communities. They want to outlaw car ownership - as if we're all under age 40, have no kids, and we all want to ride long distances to work every day.

Unfortunately for us, these people basically run the city DOT now.

I hope this means you will be chronicling these lousy bike riders, looking forward to seeing your videos after reading years of your photo chronicles of the Steinway Mansion

. And keep an eye out for these motorized skateboard cretins too. This is the new scourge.

City Hall reported 18 people killed by motorists while walking or biking through February, and 2,237 injured, compared to 19 deaths and 2,318 injuries through February 2017.

It's a good thing you're focusing on the real danger on our streets.

Anon 1: if you stop in the crosswalk, you’ve committed a traffic infraction with the same penalty as a Red light Summons. IIRC it is a 1111Dt of the VTL and I’m sure there is a duplicate NYC Traffic Regulation also...

They want to outlaw car ownership -

They want to outlaw ownership of everything, make everybody equal and under control of the government cradle to grave like in Cuba and Scandinavian country's.
Have you seen the cost of car registration, plats and title processing its near 4X what it was in 2010-- near $300!

I don't mind cyclists running reds any more than I mind pedestrians do it - as long as they're smart about it. Blowing through a red without slowing down or looking? That's a good way to get killed. They might hurt a pedestrian, but a car could kill them.

>They want to outlaw ownership of everything

They want to outlaw everything, period. Anything that's not mandatory will be prohibited.

This Saturday a cyclist blew two red lights on Grand Avenue as the traffic is flowing from the service roads and it was moving. The cyclist was not in any bike lane and too bad there are no cameras to video tape such nonsense. Sometimes it’s not the drivers fault or the pedestrian. Start ticketing cyclists. Treat them like everyone else. Put plates on them and make them up hold the rules. If this guy would have got hit it was his fault. Just as if I ran around in that traffic I would be at fault and also crazy.
