City (still) trying to crack down on parking placard abuse

From the Daily News:

The city has handed out a whopping 160,000 parking placards, to teachers, cops, Department of Transportation workers and others.

Many drivers still use dubious or outright fake placards — and manage to avoid tickets.

Meanwhile, drivers with legit placards park where they're not supposed to — on the sidewalk or blocking crosswalks. City placard holders are also only supposed to use the placards while on official business.

Under the proposed legislation, which will be introduced next week, the minimum fine for using a bogus or unauthorized placard would double from $250 to $500.

Another bill would require the city to yank a real placard if it is used inappropriately three times in a year.

The legislation would also create an electronic tracking system for city-issued placards, so officials will know who has one and whether they've been caught misusing it, and cops can confirm in real time whether a permit displayed on a car is valid.

And the NYPD would have to issue reports on how many complaints they get about placards abuse, and how many tickets they give out.

Raise the fine to 1000$ since no one will pay the ticket anyway, and demote the rank and file abuser back to traffic enforcement without a car. We save tax money, get a legal spot back, and the offender gets an actual punishment. Oh, wait. I'm sorry. Mayor Smokey just blazed up so nothing will be done...

There are countless laws that NYC doesn't enforce.

Why would this be any different!

3 strikes before revocation is too many. Caught ONCE - lose privilege, sounds right.

THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW TIMES I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT I AM SATISFIED WITH THE CITY'S RESPONSE TO A PROBLEM THAT INVOLVES CORRUPTION.

1 strike loose placard. 2nd strike, asked how you received 'your' placard back and a $1000 fine and 200 hours community service. 3rd strike, impound vehical. $1000 fine, 600 hours community service and photo of the abuser posted on Crappier so we know what a $hit looks like.

Why not boot the cars, and collect a significant fine? Sounds too easy.....

Who cares.

Let's do something about the rampant out of state plate fraud, and rampant over-policing of residential parking. We shouldn't have alternate side four days a week in some neighborhoods. The excuse that it's for street cleaning is a joke.

3 times??? When they park every day of the week illegally, that means they can actually tow the car by Thursday? Please don't make me laugh, rules are only for minions to follow.

Just like I saw on green street yesterday. A fire marshall card on a $240,000 AMG Mercedes G65...

They can start with all the cops who regularly park at fire hydrants around 11th Street, 45th Road, 45th Avenue, in Long Island City.

aw horseshit! like "A better NYC said let's enforce the laws we already have on the books

Call the placard-holders on it, your local precinct will send a car out to verify their legitimacy, then you can tow it. Once it happens once, guarantee you they don't block your driveway again (at least, not the SAME guy).

Of course the answer is always MORE LAWS!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Exactly right, last Anonymous: More ineffective laws and no justice. There are way too many laws right now that haven't been enforced in decades. Creating new laws will not do anything to change anything when there are already so many useless laws that are never enforced to begin with.

It's not so much a controlled opposition, but more like an opposition that legitimizes the political control form our do nothing, know nothing, politically failed leadership (that has never led by example).

Send a policeman to check out any reported illegal parking. He can use his own car for this--it is usually illegally parked on a curb or sidewalk near the precinct.

any imbecile with a printer and some lamination materials can make on of those placards at home.
