Building boom brings shoddy construction

From The Real Deal:

Construction defects, alleged or otherwise, are a hallmark of any building boom, and the last five years have been no exception. While there are no publicly available numbers on the frequency of such complaints, attorneys say latent defects usually spring up a year or so after buildings open. Many say they are already seeing an uptick, given that construction has been unrelenting since 2012. And they say it’s safe to assume that another wave of lawsuits is about to hit.

Building -Burgers. When ya flip 'em fast on a grill, ya get shit.
No surprise. Fast food sucks in any form.

I'm telling you, they build a house now in less than a week these days and it's just crazy. I think good craftsmanship and proper construction takes a while to get done if you want it done the proper way that is. These buildings are going up so fast meanwhile there are new developments that are half empty because the stupid city allowed affordable housing for the wealthy. If you make over 110k in this city, you can afford to live anywhere you want, you don't need special "affordable housing " for people like this.

This goes as is often the case to union vs. no-union labor. The fact is in most circumstances union work is going to be safer because a greater emphasis is placed on safety matters and they run apprentice programs where you get the proper training. There is typically a cost differential of 30% between union and non-union in wages and benefits but the work is done safer.

The problem is these developers don't want to deal with the unions and the higher wages and work rules but apparently have no problems in creating both an unsafe work environment and putting out a unsafe product.

Biggest political story of the year, a primary challenger for Joe Crowley, and this is what Queens Crap decides to focus on

These contractors probably use illegals to save money on building costs. I've seen firsthand how they use unlicensed illegals to do electrical work, resulting in improper wiring jobs. It's no surprise that these buildings are constructed so that Goldilocks could blow them over with a determined puff of air.

Building brick boxes with windows and cheap balconies. Thats the way they do it nowadays. Its never gonna change.

This is what happens when you use third world garbage to help build your building.

It's probably less the speed and more developers cutting corners. Why make $500 million in profit when you could make $500.5 million profit? Thinking long term doesn't seem to be their specialty.

It is crazy here in Manhattan too. As soon as these new buildings are fully rented or sold a heretofore unseen punch list appears and all of a sudden there is a shed and scaffolding to fix the curtain wall and contractors swarming for warranty work on the interiors.

Then, within 3 years the scaffolding is back again.

I am all in favor of modern, fireproof construction...but..with what these developers are getting for these units such shitty-flawed construction is inexcusable.
