NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 67-year-old man was beaten to death by a stranger outside his home in Queens on Wednesday night, police said.
It happened at about 10:45 p.m. outside 39-22 Crescent Street in the Long Island City section.
The victim, Nicholas Nowillow, had lived in the home for 34 years.
Neighbor Michelle Koutsilius, who lives next door to Nowillow, had called him on her cell phone and asked him to escort her from her car to her door since there was a man acting strangely outside the home and she felt intimidated by him.
Nowillow came out to walk her home when he was attacked by the man -- who allegedly beat and kicked Nowillow.
Nowillow was rushed to Astoria General Hospital in Cardiac Arrest, where he later died.
Koutsilius says Nowillow was like a father to her since her own mother died - and now she feels responsible for his death.
Police arrested the 43-year-old man but have not charged him yet.
From Eyewitness News:
The heartless suspect, who witnesses appeared to be impaired or on drugs, was taken into custody. Charges against him are pending. The female neighbor said Nowillo was like a father to her. Some neighbors said they referred to the diminutive man as the "Mayor of Long Island City."

Nice place for hotels for tourists from Manhattan.
Are you that shameless that you would take a tragic event like this and make a snide real estate development comment? Figures. I guess no one should ever go to Pace University since one of their students was just murdered, or step foot in Union Square Park since that is where the Pace student met the murderer. Crapper you are a joke for even posting this to invite these comments.
Yes, because I know what people are going to post before they post it. It's all a conspiracy!

Are you a moron?
Seems like those real estate guys ripping up Dutch Kills are getting a bit edgy.
Now is the time. (Or you will be eulogized by Ray Kelly who'll be wearing a fancy suit with a pocket hanky standing behind a microphone)

No one is lowering the issue. We all live around here(I imagine except for some as above post) and i live not that far from where this happened. The police should care about this neighborhood now, not until its gentrified.I was attacked in Union square as well a year ago by 7 little teenage thugs and then it took the cops a half hour to get there.Great uh.They had stun guns and knives but they got away and i wasnt hurt because I was quick luckily. You can go to Union square if you want.

No, we take an event like this and caution the public know so that it doesn't happen again.
