NEW DESIGNS FOR 9/11 MEMORIAL UNVEILED
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Builders have released the latest design for an entrance to the Sept. 11 memorial museum in lower Manhattan.
Architects on Tuesday detailed the updated version of the building's entrance pavilion, with steel cladding meant to resemble the twin towers.
The design by a Norwegian architectural firm, Snohetta, calls for a building that varies between 62 and 70 feet high, surrounded by a grove of oak trees.
It was presented at developer Larry Silverstein's building, 7 World Trade Center.
The pavilion will orient visitors and provide ticketing services. It also will have a 160-seat auditorium and a cafe.

Sadly most of us here will never see it compleated in out lifetime. There are "to many cooks" involved.
Whenever they do come up with something the landlord complains "More Office Space"
That land is cursed in my opinion. It was stolen from all those radio row home and store owners who were dragged out of there homes in pajamas at gunpoint.
They received peanuts for there poperty.
It was a Massive misuse of ED
They should be ashamed that more hasn't been done in the 7 years since that date. NYC is one of the richest places in the world and they have to quibble about money. I am sick to death that this is going on.
Someone should tell Larry Silverstein to GO F&*( HIMSELF and put up the memorial that the people of NYC want. Why don't they use eminent domain for that!!!! That would be justice for all!!!!
This is shameful - perhaps the memorial should be an unvarnished hole in the ground with a single light beam pointed at the heavens. The victims families, all affected and involved on 9/11 need something there to commemorate and never forget.
"Is this the best they could have come up with?"
What did you have in mind?
Do you all ever have any idea what you are talking about? What does Larry Silverstein have to do with the memorial? The only part of Ground Zero that Silverstein has total control actually has a building up now.
This memorial will be completed in 3-4 years.
And what exactly don't you like about it? What would you have preferred? I'm not saying it's great, but you criticize it without saying what you don't like or what you would have wanted to see.
Leave the footprint of the towers there as a memorial and rebuild them in a different configuration. Bring back our skyline. As Ed Koch said right after 9-11, the city has the original blueprints and can build them again with better fire exits.
"This memorial will be completed in 3-4 years."
Huh? It takes 2 years to build 2 ballparks but 3-4 years to build somethings a fraction of the size?
Mayor Seeks End of LMDC, More Control of Ground Zero
And correction: It won't take 3-4 years, but more like 10-14 years for there to be a couple of fountains and a lame-looking museum at ground zero after the towers were destroyed.
That's pathetic.
The problem isn't in taking a long time to actually build. The problem is all the delays from all the different political entities involved with the process.
I want the Towers back. Rebuild them, damnit.
I'm not saying I would work in one, but the skyline needs them.
Since downtown is becoming residential, why not rebuild them and make luxury condos out of them? People would eat them up and we'd have our skyline back!
The new buildings should be just as iconic or more as the towers, which actually never were highly regarded from an aestheic standpoint. The new buildings also will be have better amenities and safety features.
There is a 90+ story limestone hotel and condo planned for the area, directly across the street from the Woolworth building.
Just a note.
Donald Trump offered to help put the towers back (with a stronger core and escape system) as Ed Koch suggested.
Larry Silverstein complained he would never be able to rent the top 40 floors.
When Silverstein insurence company was allowed to get away with only paying for 1tower more cut backs came.
Bush promissed billions $$ that never showed up for the project
The freedom tower from what I understand will have no people on the upper 1/2 just transmitters and antenna space. (I doubt they can have an observation deck at 1700 feet the people would be fried in 60 seconds by RF)
How Larry Silverstein ended up with all this private propery I have no idea.
It was stolen via Imminent Domain in the 60's to build a transportation hub, then a WTC, Then NY Port Authoriety project.
All failed and some how Silverstein ended up with just about everything.
The WTC was perhaps the first misuse of Imminent Domain to convey Private to Private in NYC.

--Correction
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey owns the property.
Larry Silverstein owned the 2 towers and (50 year ?) lease of the property it was on.
From what I understand The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was banging Silverstein for years of back rent on the property his towers were on.
Silverstein, the Port Authority & The City had to iron out some complex deal.
if Robert Moses was still alive he's have this project finished..
ANONYMOUS: if Robert Moses was still alive he's have this project finished..
Yeah, but it'd probably be banal. The Shea Stadium of memorials to mass murder.
I thank god that you idiots have no power because this city would be a sad state.
Actually, we do have power. It's called the vote.
Yes and the majority of bloggers on this site have used it so well: Gallagher, Maltese, Como, Seminario - need I go on??????
All of whom ran unopposed, so there was no choice, except Como who won by 30 votes and may get the boot just a few short months later.
P.S. the majority of bloggers on this site are not represented by any of them. They all represent overlapping parts of a small area of Queens.
Let's also not forget that for the first time in history, Senate District 15, Council District 30 and Assembly District 30 have competitive races this November. People are waking up.
The majority of bloggers on this site are from Middle Village, Maspeth, Glendale and Ridgewood.
All of you loved Gallagher, Maltese and Seminario up until they got into little arguments with your precious JPCA.
Get off your high horse why dont you.
Think whatever you want, but the majority of bloggers on this site are not from those areas and I have the stats to prove it.
CRAPPER: I have the stats to prove it.
Just wondering - how are you able to track that?
I mean, it's obvious where I'M from and Joe From Ridgewood, and a few others. But not everyone is so upfront and there are a lot of anonymous posters. Do you work for Homeland Security or something? Not trying to get in your face, just interested.
It's called Statcounter. It shows what ISP you are using and the town you are using it from.
Well....you started it.....give us the neighborhood stats please.
Dang! That practically IS Homeland Security.
