New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes

Good morning,

Governor Paterson’s new budget proposal, yesterday, included a tax on sugar sweetened beverages of 12 cents per 12-ounce can.

According to New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes, this tax would be more than 9 times higher on a 12 pack of non-alcoholic beverages, like soft drinks, than the state tax on a 12 pack of alcoholic beverages, like beer, and would increase the cost of a two liter bottle of soda by nearly 68 cents.

Consumers and retailers will feel the impact of a tax of this magnitude on a daily basis given the still grim economic picture, and we wanted to ask your readers to join the fight against this unfair tax at www.nobeveragetax.com, by signing a petition to let Governor Paterson and State Representatives know that they will not bear the responsibility of fixing Albany.

You can also view a recent press release from New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes here.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Best regards,

Rob Longert for to New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes

Patterson goes to NJ restaurants as reported in the NY Post last week, to have a few alcohol drinks with his 19 year old honey for an afternoon delight.

So NY loses out on the NYS tax revenue, NYS restaurants don't get his business and nor does the hourly hot sheets motel in NYC get 2-3 hours of this hot couple. What a hypocrite this guy is!!

Sounds like a shill for big soda companies.

Drink water fatties.

Wow, this is one of the first intelligent taxes I've seen coming out of Albany in years.

Tax my soda pop and tell me how to shoot heroin. Thats the gubmint I want.

"Wow, this is one of the first intelligent taxes I've seen coming out of Albany in years".

Taxes which demonize a legal behavior are not 'intelligent.'

The sheer ignorance and greed in government never ceases to amaze me.

Here's a novel idea, 10% reduction of all government administrators making over $150k in yearly salaries. Wipe out your deficits and have surplus to run the State for 10+ years. I take no credit for the idea. The 12 year old selling lemonade on the street corner came up with it.

Babs -

Am looking forward to when they start to tax water. Remember that water is the leading cause of drowning.

And if you think that is silly, the EPA has ruled that CO2 is a dangerous gas and must be controlled. Guess they want to control how much we breath out.

And forget compost heaps, they produce a boatload of CO2, not to mention Methane.

My question is where have u all been when they
kept taxing smokers into the poor house. Well sugar is bad for you and soda depletes calcium. Funny how taxes that affect more than 1 class of people becomes an unfair tax. I say the playing field is getting level and always knew if they got away with over taxing smokers it wouldn't be long until they hit other things that aren't good for you. Patterson said it way back when. "it worked with tabacco". I say live and let live if we did that we wouldn't be being taxed into the poorhouse. Just get ready now for massive reports on how this tax will make us healthy and save on medical .

"Everything in moderation."
The nanny state doesn't believe free people can make sense of those three words.

I won't comment on the bias being favored with people at NoBeverageTax.com and how it links its cause to a general unfair tax.

Sugar is not "bad" for you. And neither is smoking tobacco.

An honest researcher in England named Michael White wrote an outstanding book called Smokescreens: The Truth About Tobacco (www.smokescreeens.org). Analyzing medical studies in Pathology, interviewing principled men of medicine, using statistics, history, reason and logic, he exposes the sham that the smoking crusade is.

At face, a rational person may be lead to believe, "oh, that's just tin hat stuff." "The medical community and government agencies would never allow such a breach of immorality against its people." But such a person should only look to recent events like Climategate to see the nefarious nature of a totalitarian and there minions. A whole community of "Scientists" and federal agencies, NOAA and NASA, have been compromised. The shoe is about to drop.

Why do we constantly put our small businesses out of business?

Who was running NY while Paterson was out of state?

Klink - smoking IS bad for you.

Not all smokers will die young - but most who are relatively heavy smokers (1 pack plus) will suffer from COPD sooner or later. The effects of longterm smoking is not felt until a person enters their 50s and 60s.

Don't kid yourself or let this Michael White fool you - he's selling a book.

Babs we all know smoking is not good for you, but that isn't the point. The point is not running another persons life because you disagree with what they do. They just built a huge case based on a substance that many people did to make a killing on it. They demonized it, did overkill on TV Ads, etc. I'm sure they will do the same on other foods as they need revenue. That was the point. We seem to miss that point.

Mr. Michael White had a mission that quenched his thirst to understand the truth. His motives are clear to me and to his readers.

Only the ignorant are fooled. Kidding oneself is a neurotic symptom. I don't believe I suffer from either in this context. I use objectivity, reason and proper science to reach my conclusions and beliefs. And I hold the right to change my mind when a contrary proposition is made.

Propaganda is a very real and powerful tool being used today.

Anonymous- you're absolutely right. They got away with taxing smokers. (I am not one, but did not support that tax either). If it is not illegal they should not be able to continue raising taxes because they think it should be... The line has to be drawn and the people that say "this is a GOOD tax" will be sadly surprised when they start taxing their granola!
