Drag racing accident in Fresh Meadows

From Fox 5:

FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y. - An 11-year-old boy is in critical condition after the BMW he was riding in crashed during a drag race with a Lexus in Queens.

Police say the drivers- an 18 year old and a 16 year old- were racing on Francis Lewis Boulevard just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cops say the 18-year-old driver of the BMW lost control and smashed into parked cars.

The driver, the front seat passenger and the 11 year old were taken to Booth Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the Lexus suffered minor injuries.

A witness tells Fox 5 News reporter Christine Persichette that the Lexus spun around three times before coming to a stop.

The witness added that he was not surprised that a crash occurred because drag racing happens frequently on Francis Lewis Boulevard.

Who gave the 16 year old a Lexus to drive? It is not even legal for him to drive in NYC even if he has a license.

For the last 20 years, I have lived two blocks from Francis Lewis Boulevard, on 73rd Avenue. There are drag racers there almost every night. You can hear the engines revving throughout the night. Not sure why the police do not do more to stop it. All they really have to do is park a patrol care there for a few hours.

Huh? BMWs? Lexus'? I don't even know where to begin to express my outrage. Who are these people with these expensive cars? How do they afford them? How are they so careless with them?

Anonymous said...

It's funny how people think they're fast because they can stand behind a brand. Kids who probably don't even know what a clutch is.

Why are they so careless with their cars? How about, "Why are they so careless with their children? (or someone's child?) Good God!

Sources say David Badalov, 18, and Ilya Ishhakov, 18, were in the front seat, when their BMW spun out of control, crashed into a Lexus and then hit several parked cars.

Sources say 12-year-old Aviv Babayeva was sitting in the backseat of the car. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Sources say the driver of the Lexus, David Lakhchakov, 16, had minor injuries.

16 and 18 year olds shouldn't be driving lexus or bmw. They should be riding a bicycle or driving a car that doesn't make them think they can start a race with someone!

Drag Racing CRASH not accident. An accident is something beyond your control. CRASHING is a well known risk of RACING.

Anonymous said...

the police knows there's a problem on francis lewis and do nothing about it. how about adding some cameras, so big brother is watching and maybe the kids will stop. also where the hell are the parents, hello a bmw and drag racing, now the parents will freak because their insurance will be fxxked. someone needs to get out and speak up, so all parents in that area know what the hell is going on.

Some time ago, perhaps 15, 20 years ago, an elderly man in that vicinity spilled oil on the street.

It killed the drag racer.

The oil thrower was arrested, tried and convicted and jailed.

The drag racers, who are far more dangerous than that fellow, keep it up.

Where are the police?

Why has nothing been done to make drag racing impossible?

How about arrests and auto confiscation? Serious time behind bars for drag racing. No return - ever - of confiscated vehicles.

Who is behind these events? Who benefits?

Anonymous said...

Anyone caught drag racing should have the car confiscated, do community service and have his/her car auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Police Department. The city makes money and the racers learn a lesson. What a concept!

Install speedbumps on the sections of Franny Lewis most favored by racers. That'll curb their activities pretty quickly.

Hello,

Who says this is only kids? I live a block from Franie Lou and I hear this crap every night from April on. If the NYPD steps up, they will probably place a patrol for just a few days and that will be it, but more can be done, the ideas and suggestions are plenty but how can anything really count and be applied to our streets? This is just not a fact been pointed out to kids, there are also guys in their 20's and 30's on motorcycles. For those of us who reside on this vicinity, look what happened on April of 2008 on Franie Lou and 46th ave, a young man in his 20's lost his life, cause, motorcycle and an old man who blew the stop sign. And again, the NYPD does nothing about it, this is an issue that as far as I can remeber has ocurred since the 90's. Franie Lou is well known for that, who are the top politicians who represent us? How many more accidents we have to witness until something gets done? Perhaps, the name should be changed from Francis Lewis Blvd, to Raving Maniacs Blvd.

If the police can confiscate people's cars for DUI then they should get the cars from drag racers too. Francis Lewis north of Hillside Ave has turned into a race way. Driving on it on friday or saturday nights is flat out dangerous. If the 111th Precint. (which covers francis lewis in Bayside and Whitestone) can give out hordes of parking tickets and harass H.S. students at the request of principles, how about a little police work after dark?

Just more Russian punks thinking they own it all...last year drag racing accident on Main Street, and Harry Van Arsdale left someone dead...Same type of names...Russian's...

Anonymous said...

Hey "Taxpayers"...I was there 20 years ago when that person poured oil on Francis Lewis Blvd, in Whitestone. The homeowner did that to stop motorcycles from racing and the loud noise they make. OK, I can see his frustration, but bad decision. What happened next was a car going by (nothing to do with racing) lost control on the oil, and crashed into a light pole, leaving driver in critical condition. The Queens DA decided to prosecute the homeowner for this.

Anonymous said...

Bloomberg sucks. I made complaints about these accidents in the past and NO RESPONSE from 311. Fuck Bloomberg hard.

Anonymous said...

the oil was a mistake but 311 doesn't respond. I made many complaints and no speed bump. the hell with that.

Anonymous said...

When I was 16, I was happy to have 10-speed bike. Guess my parents should have been involved in organized crime and money laundering.

Anonymous said...

Sure, the police could confiscate their cars but think of the dangers of having that type of penalty. I'm sure the racers will still be there but when cops come I'm sure highspeed chases will occur.

I know I sure as hell wouldn't pull over or stop if I knew my car could get comfiscated. Plus define drag racing. Maybe the person just accelerated quickly? I think scrutiny would come and how do you really prove drag racing? Plus, I'm sure if these pursuits happened, gun fights would happen. I know I'd fire on a cop if they were trying to take my baby. And that's with my dad and uncle being policemen.

I think the parents should be more at fault. If children get a car with more power than say 200hp, then road race courses and such should be mandatory.

It's what my dad did for me when he bought me a 1987 Ford Mustang with a 331 stroker motor when I was 14. I'm now 18 almost 19 and sad to say I'm one of few kids, very few, that graduated with the same car they started HS with. Most others wrecked theres.

The strip of Francis Lewis Blvd. in Fresh Meadows by 73rd Ave was a great drag racing strip. I see that it still is. The Franny Lew in Whitestone/Bayside was more of a cruising strip. Me and my friends used to have a blast back in the day. The cops put a stop to it years ago. I live a block off the blvd and there is no problem other than the occasional motorcycle going 80 mph at 2AM. I wised up and put the A/C on all night so I don't hear it anymore.

Ms. Tsouris said...

Does anyone remember a place in the '60's called "Connecting Highway"? This was the premier local racing strip, and I never figured out just where it was. It was somewhere around Queens Blvd. and the Van Wyck, possibly. Francis Lewis Blvd. between 73rd Ave. and the eastbound LIE service road is also notorious for drag racing. I do remember that strip being patrolled a few years ago after some accident, but nothing was done to correct the situation. Speed strips only seem to be installed when some influential person lives on that road, otherwise it's jumping through hoops at some bullshit community board meeting.

You're sick. said...

To the guy who said he would fire at a cop if they tried to take his "baby":

You also said that your father and uncle are cops. How would you feel if your father was shot and killed by some litte punk because he didn't want to lose his ride.

I don't think you'd say "Well my father was trying to take his baby."

You need some serious help.

I hope I never run into you on Francis Lewis. For my sake and yours.

Maybe a Dunkin Donuts on Francis Lewis would help!

Anonymous said...

Have you read their names? Do you still think they're "guidos"? It's so easy to stereotype, isn't it? It's also easy to be wrong. Offspring of overindulgent parents would be more apt.

Anonymous said...

This is not "drag racing"! Drag racing is a timed contest on a straight closed course, uually a quarter mile. These guys are just trying to pass the other guy, they get to a curve and then lose it.And btw, don't blame the cops, they are down 5500 men,and the recruits hired the last 5 years getvirtually no field training. Blame b-berg and kelly for letting the manpower decrease and funding useless bike lanes and social programs for people who don't deserve to breathe air.

Guido's? No ,FFR's

No, not Guidos. More like stupid Russians.

Okay i agree, these kids were a little too spoiled. Those idiots deserve the worst of whats coming to them. The worst part of it is that the 12 year old kid is in a coma fighting for his life because of the mistakes of some punk assholes.

Yes I remember Connecting Highway - when I was about 10 years old my fmaily was coming home from visiting reliatives in Brooklyn and we got caught up in a drag race - I remember being very scared. Thankfully we got off - but the racers continued to go incrediobly fast.

Anonymous said...

I think the parents should take some fault in this cause who in there right mind hands over that kind of power to kids when they can't handle it.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Taxpayer, but the problem is if they could afford a BMW most of us already know that if you have $$$$$$$ u r above any laws. That is the biggest problem facing people today.

A terrible loss of automobiles? Who cares about stupid BMW'S and LEXUS's. we should all be happy that everyone is alive, and pray for the 12 year old, who is in critical condition..
seriously you people have no heart, they didnt EXPECT to get into an accident & you should stop stereotyping on people so what if theyre russians, or guidos , who cares, theyre all human, people make mistakes, you should all just be wishing for the best for them

Anonymous said...

The city cannot install speed bumps on Francis Lewis because it is a bus route.

In order to appease drag racers, the city should build a racetrack for them, where they can go hurt themselves, without hurting innocent bystanders.

Anonymous said...

If NY had a track where the people can go to race they wouldn't have this problem. But as soon as they try to open one the people protest and people with money put a stop to it because they have the polititions in there pocket.

Anonymous said...

"In order to appease drag racers, the city should build a racetrack for them, where they can go hurt themselves, without hurting innocent bystanders."

With tax dollars? No, let them build and insure it.

Anonymous said...

WOW you people are really stupid. Like seriously who cares what nationality they are all humans. This crash was all a mistake. Like they say he had no control of the car because the lexus hit the bmw and the bmw had no control and it just turned in 360s and crashed. And how do the cops know for sure it was drag racing? huh? Maybe they were speeding. The cops are just exaggerating this situation. I mean yeah a child's life was at stake and so were the other 3 people but you all should just be happy that everyone is alive. And if the cops and people who live in that area claim that drag racing is always happening in that area for years then why haven't they even done anything like putting speed bumps and other types of things to make sure people don't drag race???

Anonymous said...

They tried to do that. The schmucks in city hall and in Albany didn't help. Here's proof.

Anonymous said...

Trying to do that does not show anything. Doing something to make a situation like this shows something. The people in the city have part of fault in this too because if they know things like this happen already a multiple number of times than something should have been done. But the city waits for something really bad to happen then they start to take action.

Queens Crapper said...

That's nice but the way things work in this city is that the people just can't do as they please, they have to go through the bureaucracy of city agencies and sometimes through the legislators to get what they want. They have plead with them to take action, but they did not. So blame them.

There are plenty of race tracks. Monticello is 2 hrs away, so is Lime Rock, Pocono, and New Jersey Motorsports park. If you like drag racing there is Englishtown and Atco. A track day at any road course is going to cost you 350 to sign up, and another 150 for food and fuel for the day, minus hotels if the tracks are very far. You also need to purchase a snell approved helmet which is easily over $100 for something basic. These programs make you a better driver, with real learning and skill from a driving instructor involved using your own car. How many people want to spend $500 on a track day? Now how many want to spend that when they are 17 and a set of wheels are more important before actually knowing car control and your own limits first? I think some people just find their driving ability when it's already too late. There needs to be more education and driver training, way before we incorporate ways to reduce drag racing and to get irresponsible "kids" off the street. It is way too easy and inexpensive to get a drivers license.
Street racing will never go away, no matter how many accidents occur. Theres no two ways about it.
Chris

It is easy to blame each other the parent the kids the syatem. But it dosent fix the problem. Everyone should say a pray for the 11 year old - and use this as an example for their teenage children. In todays world both parents have to work and a large percent of homes are broken, children are left unattended and people are fast to call childrens services on parents for being abusive. Remember it is not the amount of time that is spent with your children that is important

But the QUALITY OF THE TIME!!!
My prayers go out to all involved

Horrible things happen everyday to people. Theres always someone shooting, molesting, raping, murdering etc. Yea, i admit it was stupid for these kids to race but thats what adolesecents do- they dont think. No matter their race or religion- kids will be kids. Who cares what kind of cars they were driving, would you care as much if they were driving an 04 altima, probably not. They never woke up with the intention to kill someone especially their own cousin. As soon as a jew makes a mistake everyone is quick to judge- look at the rest of the world-- you know you're not perfect either-you all know who you are!!

Anonymous said...

the poor little child passed away & all everyone can do is sit here & discuss who was at fault. this couldve happened to anyone. this wasnt because of the TYPE of car or the AGE of the drivers or the NATIONALITY of the people. & as for speeding, we live in NY...its either we're maniacs when we drive fast or morons when we drive slow.

the most important thing is that a life was lost. & we have to consider the families & how their lives have changed in a split second. my prayers go out to all those involved, parents, families, friends, & especially Avi. May he rest in peace & watch over us from above. He will always be remembered.

You are an ASS, i know the family and they were not rich, the mothert and father worked 7 days a week cutting hair to support their family, they even brought their children to work with them so that they could spend more time together. the mother is now heavly sedated just to help her coup with the loss of here only son. So do us all a favor and in the future please put your brain in gear before youo put your mouth or in this case your fingers, in motion. all this family needs right now is prayers and alot of time to heal beacuse they will never be the same again.

Its messed up how people are worrying about the cars and not the kids life. The 11 year boys life got taken away. Its more important for people to ask about what happened to the car?? but not how they all are now and people saying the police should do more blah blah hold your comments to yourself!! Noones needs to see that.
