Proposed Atlas Park development site sold to Gina Argento-Ciafone

From the Queens Courier:

Glendale is ready for its close-up.

Brooklyn-based television and film production company Broadway Stages plans to build a massive film studio and retail complex in the neighborhood with existing warehouses.

The firm purchased Atlas Terminals, a huge industrial park with buildings adjacent to The Shops at Atlas Park mall, for $19.5 million, as first reported by The Courier on Monday.

“We’re excited to turn the existing warehouses at Atlas Terminals into some TV and film studios and create rental space for local mom and pop retail businesses,” said Jackie Kessel, Broadway Stages spokeswoman. “We look forward to working with local officials as we develop our plans to draw on all of the energy around Atlas Park, bringing new jobs, business growth and economic development to Queens.”

you may recall that this site was promoted as a future shopping center, and in recent months, Fairway was rumored to be the anchor tenant. I guess that's not happening.

Hey, maybe Gina will donate to the anti-homeless shelter fund!

This whole property will be one big nightmare. In Greenpoint, there are movie trailers parked all over the streets instead of on the lot where they belong, the studio and pols ignore all complaints and the NYPD looks the other way as well. And the "mall" that will be built here will most likely be home to a nail salon, Chinese takeout, cell phone store, etc - just a bad idea. The original plan was to put a Fairway in so at least Glendale folks would have a decent alternative to shop for groceries besides Stop & Shop.

I think eventually these people will buy up all of what's left of the industrial properties in the city and then pitch affordable housing and develop it all.

The ran into a problem when Fairway backed out due to financial difficulties and scaling back any new stores. whole foods won't open up there and trader joes and stop and shop are already so close by

No wonder Crowley moved her office to Atlas, now she can be near her pals.

Honestly, I live in Middle Village and I'm thrilled by this news. If it's going to help those struggling businesses at the mall, I'm happy. Plus, it's not another shelter. Finally, it may help fund the fight against the proposed shelter.

Why would you think that? There are 4 or 5 shelters in Greenpoint and these folks did nothing to stop them.

"If it's going to help those struggling businesses at the mall, I'm happy."

How will it do that?

there are not doing nothing per se,they are working,on our tax dollars, for the argentos and not the people.the only business that its going to help is broadway stages.

Exactly.

When they film on the streets here, the city always says "filming is good for the local economy", but those film crews are all contracted union services. Take a look at the addresses on the trucks. Its all based in PA, NJ, etc.

Even the catering trucks are from outside the city. Local businesses get nothing.

Actors and crew don't go into the local bagel store for a coffee and a sandwich, they go to the catering cart.

It should be a combination asphalt plant and composting facility.

Well Gina and Tony were caught operating an illegal waste transfer station, so it may very well be.
