Thousands of cops turn backs on DeBlasio

From the NY Post:

Mayor de Blasio tried to make peace with the NYPD Saturday but again collided with the Blue Wall of Resentment.

As he took the podium Saturday at the funeral of slain Officer Rafael Ramos, thousands of cops outside the church turned their backs to the video monitors showing the mayor delivering his eulogy inside.

In a gradual wave, the assembled cops nearest the screens and speakers on Myrtle Avenue in Queens began to about-face, until the entire sea of blue stretching two blocks had their backs to the image of the city’s leader.

“Our hearts are aching today. We can feel it physically. We feel it deeply. New York City has lost a hero — a remarkable man because of the depths of his commitment to all around him,” de Blasio said of Ramos.

As he acknowledged the fallen officer’s family, the mayor reached out to the rank-and-file.

“I extend my condolences to another family — the family of the NYPD that is hurting so deeply right now,” said de Blasio.

Officers outside maintained a stony silence throughout the eulogy until de Blasio began to speak in Spanish, which prompted snickers.

And the ones in the photo aren't even NYPD, for the most part...

this Lynch-ing of the mayor is going to undermine any trust of the NYPD,which continues to blame the murders of liu and ramos on the garner protests.

despite how oblivious and crass the mayor is and his stupid false concern for dante, the cops still work for him and the citizens of nyc.with this symbolism, they are turning their backs on the people too.

are there any pics of backs turning on bratton?

and has some comments noted before, the cops should have been the first contract to take of that was left abandoned by mayor fun size.definitely before that
bus driver contract.

A mayor who does not have the respect of his cops needs to abdicate "the throne". Hizzoner's rating is in the toilet ("throne") with the voters anyway , so as a life long New Yorker, I personally call upon him to resign for the good of our city.

CNN: " A majority of New York City voters rated Mayor Bill de Blasio positively in a new survey conducted largely before the shooting of two NYPD officers this weekend that put de Blasio in the national spotlight. The survey, conducted by Quinnipiac University, showed 53% of city voters viewed him favorably, while 33% viewed him unfavorably and another 10% say they haven't heard enough about him to decide."

I understand the "de Blasio should resign" sentiment, but there's just one problem with that. If he departs, his replacement is the public advocate-- who's just as liberal as the current mayor. Nothing would change. The same policies will be coming from City Hall whether it's de Blasio or Letitia James in charge.

If you want de Blasio out, you'll have to wait until 2017 and hope that a strong Democrat to the right of de Blasio's hard left politics challenges him in the primary. Three years is a long time; things can improve for de Blasio, though I don't see how. But if things continue going downhill for him and the city, he's going to get primaried. And with this city's Republican Party almost nonexistent, that's the only chance of de Blasio being ousted after one term in office.

Poll conducted before the shooting? How about now? 53% not much of a majority.

The cops have every rite to turn their backs on the Mayor if they are not on duty but the funeral was about their fallen brother, not deBlas. There is a time and place.

They turned their backs to a jumbotron. No issue with it.

Why should the mayor of the greatest city in the world abide for what the cops have to say about him? Are the cops running the show here?
The cops lost two comrades because of a murder and they throw a sideshow. People die everyday in different circumstances and nobody makes a parade out of it.
Get you act together, life goes on. We all feel sorry for them and their families but stuff happens and this one came with the job in this case.
Don't allow this occurrence to become a racial or political issue, seek how to prevent it instead from happening again to a cop or any other citizen.
We all share this space called New York City, we are all connected.

Now that is a peaceful protest! It got the point across loud and clear without a word being spoken, or a sign or banner being waved.

If the NYPD gets a generous contract settlement (i.e., more generous than other unions), let's see if suddenly the Mayor becomes Mr. Popular. Would de Blasio try to buy loyalty?

Anonymous said...

Why wouldn't the Blaz buy loyalty, his promise of free healthcare, housing and EBT Cash is bringing in losers from all over the country paid for by the working man, old hotels turning into housing going to family's from pensilvania to Florida owned by his biggest doners is a Joke,in Oakland ca they Advertise NYs generous benifits,.

The contract is out of the mayor's hands at this point. It's in binding arbitration and any raise will be awarded by the arbitrator not the mayor. The mayor (as well as the cops) will just be forced to honor the terms and payment the arbitrator has set.

JQ - cops don't answer to DiBlasio, they answer to Bratton. Bratton can take suggestions from DiBlasio, but he is under no obligation to follow his directives. DiBlasio CANNOT give NYPD orders. They do not "work for" DiBlasio.

You're talking about the unions right? Try and bring labor levels to high by national and international standards as opposed to the highest and the unions throw a fit. You see that with the cops right now. They're bleeding the city dry and all they want is more money. Sack the lot of them.

Liberals seem to love unions, but only when they aren't police related.

Why is that?

Das Wilhelm is bringing down NYC to where or was in the 1970s. A colleague of mine just cancelled his trip from Britsin because he feared coming to an unruly city. I think he was overreacting but there you go. How many tourists are thinking the same thing? A city that has put all it's eggs in the tourism basket has a lot to worry about. We do not manufacture much these days. Tourists are the life blood of NYC. And NO the cops should not run any city. Respect goes both ways.

No, the people who are bleeding the city dry are the welfare/ ebt leeches and illegal immigrants who drive around in Mercedes and bmw's, have a collection of 300 dollar sneakers, and wear designer clothing and jewelry, then cry racism every time they don't get what they want.

The illegals alone cost for more then all the corrupt racketeer unions combined.

These Latino refuse to use birth control and have 4 or more kids by age 30. Figure $20,000 a child for education and then add all the free stuff.
Do the math its easily over $100,000 per family. Its Sickening !!

I'm for sending all the blood sucking unions packing. If some cop, Sanatation or Con Ed worker with a golden retirement package and parachute cant live comfortably on $100,000+ a year F_ em

So the cops (many of whom are not even a part of the NYPD or even cops in New York State, and who have no duty to serve or respect the mayor in the first place) turn around, away from a screen showing the mayor talking at a funeral for one of their own, and some people think it is the worst thing ever.

There was no banners or signs waved with stupid slogans, no die-in's, no chants of no justice no peace, no looting or property damage, or rioting or assaults. An action where not one word was spoken, but loudly showed the response to the disrespect that the mayor has shown his cops. A true peaceful protest. And amazingly people have problems with it.

The mayor threw his cops (who yes sometimes make mistakes and by no means perfect, but overall have busted their asses in thankless communities) so children (many whom look like Dante) could walk home from school without being robbed or shot.

The mayor utterly disrespected
his cops by saying that he is fearful with his son around the NYPD and had to talk to him about it, but yet allows his whole family to be guarded around the clock by those whom he fears most. The mayor who proudly stands next to an opportunist money hungry race baiter to slam the NYPD on an almost daily basis before this tragedy.

The cops who many cry are so overpaid, yet stand out on Christmas and New Years, and at 2 am in the rain and snow dealing with all of society's problems, and criminals, away from their families and their homes.

Turning their backs to the mayor should have been done months ago. I wouldn't even be mad if they walked off the job at this point and told Sharpton and the anti cop protesters to handle the 911 calls.

I for one am glad that they are here and also turn my back to the mayor in disgust.

Poltics is compromise. When you wntvto run a city on a strict agenda and not be flexible, you will have problems. Once the wall st money people call city hall, you will see mr. Wilhelm jump. This is nyc, money talks and bill will walk.

The cops are wrong for bringing their political issues up at a funeral. Demonstrators who kept demonstrating are wrong for not stopping at least for the few days of the funeral. Both groups deserve contempt, because the only thing that matters at least for a few days, is the families of the slain officers.
Both groups disrespected the families. There is no defense for either one.

If you're a parent of an African-American Male you would be doing him a disservice if you DID NOT have the talk about how his interaction with a cop could turn fatal if he is perceived to be a threat. In American society a white kid in a hoodie is looked at as being just a kid. On the flip side, a black kid in a hoodie is considered to be up to no good.

I see your point about NYPD feeling disrespected about the mayor having the talk with his son especially since it is the NYPD that guards his son. What the mayor most likely fears is that if Dante is out and about on his own, "fits the description" of a perpetrator and runs into a cop, that could become a tragic encounter.

I don't knock the mayor for his decision for having the talk with Dante. You admit cops make mistakes...well those mistakes can be fatal. A father is supposed to protect and provide wisdom to his children. As a father of an African-American male he did just that. Family First. If that ruffles the feathers of NYPD...oh well.

Jerry Rotondi said...

These are my parting thoughts. This is all about politics when the dust finally clears. Unfortunately throughout US history RACE was often used as a platform for political gain by many. That stinks , but democracy is a moving stream that guarantees fresh untainted potable government . Our country was referred to as the great experiment. Protest and demonstrations are essentially an American right. Personally, I would not have used a funeral to make a point. Yet the point was made and it was peaceful compared to our own 18th century's bloody revolution. We won't even discuss the one that the French had. Now, let both sides find some solid ground to stand on for a better New York for all of it's residents!
Enough said.

The latest Quinnipiac University poll, out before the killings, showed the mayor’s approval rating at 47 percent — lower than the 53 percent he had in mid-January.

They did it in support of PO Ramos. Had the mayor not snubbed the NYPD and sided with Sharpton, then Ramos and Lui would still be alive . It's plain as day that Bratton is brown-nosing the mayor. For shame.

fine don't believe me

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has spoken out against the actions of the police officers who spontaneously turned their backs to Mayor de Blasio at the funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos. "I certainly don't support that action," Bratton said on CBS' Face The Nation. "That funeral was held to honor Officer Ramos. And to bring politics, to bring issues into that event, I think, was very inappropriate."

Bratton also discussed the larger "pent-up frustrations" that he believes are fueling the protests in the wake of the Michael Brown and Eric Garner grand jury decisions, which go beyond the NYPD: "This is about the continuing poverty rates, the continuing growing disparity between the wealthy and the poor. It's still about unemployment issues. There are so many national issues that have to be addressed that it isn't just policing, as I think we all well know," he said.

He also discussed the need to recognize the concerns and fears of the African-American community, calling it their "reality."

"In policing that sometimes it's difficult to see those [concerns]. And I made comments yesterday in my eulogy about seeing each other to understand," Bratton said. "Right, when I say 'see each other,' that means to not look past each other, but to really see what is motivating what we're experiencing."

which reminded me of this scene.

1) The way these "oppressed" people complain they have to act around police is the way any decent person does naturally: don't mouth off, stay quiet if you don't think answering will help, don't become loud, don't be disrespectful back (even if you feel being "disrespected"), and DON'T RESIST ARREST. Go meekly and file complaint later!

2) Even if there WERE legitimate reason for the Blaz to teach his son special caution, his decision to include that completely unnecessary aside on his personal life as the response to a Grand Jury decision rendered lawfully was SO poorly chosen, and threw gasoline on a fire he helped stoke on the campaign trail. Unproductive, divisive, and enabling the most radical rhetoric on both sides.

He's a goddamn fool elected by something like 15% of the entire eligible voters who never held a job managing anything outside of government, and in his arrogance went after an office with actual responsibility, way above his capability.

All the reactionaries posting here know that this issue is just lowest common denominator 2014 "us vs. them" / liberal vs. conservative politics.

And all of you just LOVE to see a sea of cops turning their backs on a "progressive" mayor. That's what's going on w/ this entire story--defying a "liberal agenda." It has nothing to do with anything else but that in the end.

Such simpletons!

Anonymous said...

The liberal agenda is to support unions and all types of demonstrations as freedom of speech. So what happened here?

Anonymous said...

Everyone knows the stripes of this piece of shit Duh Blazio. He and his buddy Al Sharpton, and his wife's cop-hating cronies, made it clear where they fall out months ago.

Anonymous said...

They are allowed to express themselves as they see fit--no liberal is interested in infringing on the right of a union to set its own agenda.

That said, talk to any NYPD member and you'll know the great disconnect that exists between Lynch, etc., and the rank and file. It's a huge organization!

A final thought: not all "liberals" are the cartoon characters you all envision them to be! Try to think more critically instead of existing to confirm your own biases.

This goes for both sides! Sheesh.

Hey, If you're a f_cking criminal or a drunk behind the wheel then you're a fucking criminal or drunk behind the wheel. Like it or not, the cops are just doing their job and that's that. Comply!

The world needs authority to enforce obedience because some people are scumbag, disrespectful animals - and because of those people some unfortunately get caught up in the crossfire by mistake, and that's because the world isn't fair but that's too f_cking bad too!

Assholes like Obama, Sharpton and DiBlasio blame poverty? bullshit! My mother and father didn't have any shoes, ate hard bread for breakfast, and had to go junking to earn money. Did mom &n dad use that as an excuse to be a f-cking criminal, disrespect the law and act like apes? Hell No!! Poverty my fucking ass!

Funny, i've lived in some large apartment complexes in this city and the crime was fairly low. Amazing we didn't need the police patrolling inside and out 24/7. It blows my mind how certain folks are always complaining of being dissed. Guess what, you can't respect yourself, you're not getting it from me.
