Rules don't apply to them

Crappy,

These photos of Senator Schumer and Congressman Weiner were snapped yesterday at the Forest Hills Memorial Day parade. There were a few other local tweeder politicians marching, but at least they had the decency not to carry signs stating who they were. (For the record, none of the politicans received much in the way of applause.)

I'm not sure what the rules for the Forest Hills parade were, but a few miles away in Maspeth another parade was held in which politicians were told specifically not hold up signs. Someone posted on Facebook that Weiner held up a sign in the Maspeth parade after he was asked not to do so.

RE: politicians with campaign name signs at the Memorial Day Parades.

Schumar,Weiner and A.Cuomo repeated this dishonoring of U.S.military war heroes who died for their Nation"s defense. this was at the Little Neck /Douglaston parade.

see:http://picasaweb.google.com/

November is gonna be a lot of fun.....

Is not the carrying of a political sign covered under the Constitutional right to free expression? Our heros who sacrificed their lives did so, among other things, in defense of that Constitution.

Anonymous said...

Yes, it is, Anon, which is why they weren't thrown in the gulag (although the idea appeals). They have every right to disobey a simple request and I have every right to bitch, moan and complain about it and not vote for them in November.

Actually, "freedom of expression" would apply to a spectator. But when you sign up to march in a parade, you are supposed to abide by the organizers' rules. That's why there was such an uproar over St. Pat's. They allow the gays to march but not with a banner identifying them as gay. Same principle here. Kinda dumb to bring up the constitution when that issue has already been settled by the courts.

Maspeth Mom says...

Then whats the difference between the Boys Scouts marching with a banner the Kiwanis club marching with a banneer. Maspeth Fed? I am not sure what is the difference?

Is it a written rule or an unwritten rule?

It doesn't matter. All pols were asked not to bring signs when they signed up and were reminded of that when they showed up with them at the parade. They chose to be disrespectful instead.

How pathetic that after more than 2 decades in office, these 2 felt they needed to announce who they were.

It's not about honoring the war dead, it's about getting my name and my face in front of the public. It's about considering the parade organizers as "nobodies" - people I can disrepect and lie to without consequence. My presence gives some significance to this parade. They should be happy for me to be here.

I am more offended by the bullhorns. It's bad enough they had to pollute the streetscape, but we were also forced to listen to them come up with such pearls of wisdom like, "How is everybody doin?" "Thanks for coming"

Actually, why weren't these 2 marching with the other dignitaries at the beginning of the parade? They think they're extra special?

Chuck Schumer only does what benefits him!

I saw him at a function for someone else and all he did the whole time he was there was talk talk talk. He was there to honor someone but just couldn't shut up. He was very disrespectful to the person he was honoring even when they were giving a speech. He was in the row in front of me and I got really annoyed and leaned forward and asked him if it was too much trouble to show this person some respect while they gave their speech.

He did but only for a moment and went back to his yada yada yada....

What an arrogant disrespectful person!

We need to the sign to identify our politicians - we don't ever see them till election time and can't recognize them in a parade. Name tags are a good solution too. Where is Joe Crowley parading at = Purto Rico?

I am so glad you posted this -

I noticed too at the Whitestone Memorial Day Parade that there was a group of about 6 or 7 people with campaign signs for Elio Forcina.

I totally agree with Crappy that it was disrespectful of them to use the parade for political gain.

Matter of fact, I was so outraged that even though I am a Liberal Dem - I would vote Republican before voting for Elio!

Next year politicos - be aware of the fact the public is on to you. Expect to be BOOOED in the next Memorial Day Parade.

Political banners were allowed at the Little Neck Parade if purchased from the parade committee and approved by them. Weiner and Schumer's weren't.

Other than disobeying the requests of parade organizers, there's nothing offensive about a "Senator Schumer Salutes our Veterans" sign.

Too few people vote as it is, so perhaps more campaigning is in order. The parade presents an opportunity for incumbents and insurgents alike to show heir faces to the public.

Also, I know of so many other ways to desecrate Memorial Day- barbecuing, looking for discount shopping, and swimming on the beach.

Anyway, for all my irreverence, as a performer, I gave veterans and active personnel free admission on Memorial Day.

Politicians have always marched in the parade - I THOUGHT to express their support and love for our service men and women AS WELL AS for self-aggrandizement.

To come with a posse of sign-carrying drones IMMEDIATELY takes the attention off the veterans themselves and thereby JADES the parade.

PLEASE save your signs and your drones for another parade.

Are you a poll dancer?

We'll remember all these politicians on Election Day. If they were efficient in their jobs, people would know who they were and they wouldn't need to hold up a sign. Note to all people running against these jerks -- we need people who will represent us and work for us. If this is your intention, you will win the election come November.

I saw these two clowns pass right by Maspeth Federal on the corner of 69th and Grand Ave. Schumer was zigzagging from one side of the crowd to the other vamping up the "Support Our Troops" stuff (I'd love to see his actual voting record) while Weiner - I never tire of that name - had a MEGAPHONE yelling loudly behind a column of Marines. It was bizarre. Schumer looked like the Joker and Weiner looked like a minor villain.

Any applause they heard was because people were being polite in the presence of the troops, you don't go to wedding to start trouble and you don't go to a parade to boo. But the urge to boo was palpable. These pols find shelter - or perhaps a parasite's perch - beneath the "common" civility of the "common" folk.

I'm glad you shared this -

This behavior is intolerable -

The Memorial Day parades are for the veterans who lost their lives in defense of our country and are not for politicians.

Politicians should be there to say "Thank You." Its because of the service of the veterans that we have the ability to run for office.

when A.Cuomo's team of 30 sign carrying marchers heard the parade watchers on the sidewalks critisizing their disrespect for American heroes who died ,Cuomo's team began loudly yelling to drown out the critics. the photo only partially shows the blue "attorney gen sign" and full A.Cuomo banner.

a rumor quoted Cuomo's organizer as telling parade organizers "sue me".

Congressman Crowley attended the Woodside Memorial Day parade and ceremonies.
My facebook photo

Politicians should show up at these events to thank the veterans and the community leaders who attend. Crowley with whom I disagree with on all things political had something non-political and appropriate to the setting to say.

Babs said...

Agreed - that's the way it always has been as far as I can remember.

I have to assume that one sh*thd politico thought of it - and the others went along with it I guess since it appears ALL our parades were littered with these creeps.

WHY did they think it was ok to do what they did?

Let's ASK them - we could email them our sentiments AND/OR voice our disapproval to the print media by bombarding them with letters expressing our outrage.

Asshole.
He was in Little Neck as well. My band was playing in CJ's parking lot.
Chuck, Bloomberg and that whole mob sent a goon squad of cops to have us stop playing.
All Schumar did was walk 4 blocks for cameras yelling "thank You" "thank you" followed by an army of armed undercover in flack jackets
They the bailed into cars.

More offensive to me were the many spectators who don't know enough to salute a flag when it passes in front of them and those adult spectators who can't manage to take their hats off when the Star Spangled Banner is played or sung at ceremonies. Rules don't seem to apply to them either.

Pretty Boy Ed Braunstein was in Little Neck with his super-lobbyist uncle parading with a sign too...and should we expect anyting less from Goomba Elio and the Whitestone La Famiglia crew???......Is Steve Behar the only Class Act in this race?

Go Steve Behar!

As far as I know, Elio Forcina is the only veteran in the race for the Assembly seat in the 26 a.d....and Frank Padavan is the only other veteran candidate in any race in North Queens....if operatives for any of the other candidates want to be cute and attack Elio Forcina for being a veteran, they should look him up and give him a call instead of hiding behind anonymous posts...just a thought after reading this ridiculous blog...I never served this country, however, I think there is a word used in the military to describe these anonymous posts...COWARDS...
