"Afro Pick" listed on NYPD property form

From Fox 5:

There is controversy over the document used by cops when they arrest someone. It's called the Prisoner's Property Form. Two words on the form that Fox 5 News obtained are under scrutiny. A woman whose relative was taken into custody couldn't believe that the form had "Afro Pick" as a choice under the personal property.

When asked to comment, the NYPD released this statement: "The form was revised in 2008. We are exhausting our stock. The new form says 'Hair Pick/Comb.'"

Take a look at the Central Booking Prisoner’s Property Form for yourself.

Ugh - What next to complain about - Afro Pick - yeah so what else is it called?
Is there a new policially correct name for Afro Pick? Jeez... as a society dont we have any thing else to think/worry about. I am sure if the person who started complaing about this, has a kid in Irag/Afghanistan, they would not focus their energies concentrating on such trivial matters.

An Afro is a haircut. Plenty of white people with thick curly hair had them when I was growing up.

So after all these years, now it's NOT called an afro pick? I never got the memo, and apparently neither did alot of black paople (or whatever they are calling themselves this week) who I have heard refer to said item as either "their pick" or "afro pick".

What an exclusive! Fox 5 really hit this one out of the ballpark! They really nailed the NYPD this time. I am sure this shocking scandal will send shockwaves through police plaza, and cause the downfall of Kelly and his toadies! Thanks for keeping us informed. By the way, how is the NYPD's "paddy wagon" fleet holding up?

Evidence of a slow night for news.

So what? What's the point? The word "afro" is a slur now? When did that happen? I too did not get that memo.

Outrage over this is ridiculous, just like the outrage over "English spoken here".

Give me a break!!! I'm so sick and tired of all this crap. People are never satisfied unless they complain and beat up on the PD.
Please explain to me why people call themselves African-Americans?
Don't you have to be born in a country and then emigrate to America to say that? If you're born in America...than you're an American, that is unless they're not proud to claim America as your homeland.

So what's her next step, to sue the NYPD? Presumably. Oh, and while we're at it, better check the PC dictionary for the new term for "du rag."

Last month on the news, I saw a small piece that said Gov Paterson signed legistlation that deems the word "oriental" used to describe Asians, as bias. Basically using the work "oriental" is now the same as the "N" word.

Re: Oriental instead of Asian.

This reminds me of the Soviet Union where babushkas went to the gulag if they said, "St. Petersburg," or "Leningrad" instead of "Stalinsburg."

What are you going to do, open yourself up to age discrimination suits if you discipline some grandma for not using the right term?

If you were a white Jew with a blow-out in the 70s your "do" was jokingly referred to as an "Izro" (as in Israel).

Afro...shmafro pick!

It's a potential WEAPON!

Next time I buy a set of colored pencils should I ask for a box of pencils of color?

Sh-e-e-e-sssh what "A" holes!

We'll all be needing a copy of a "politically correct" dictionary/ thesaurus soon.

That way we'll be sure we're up to date on all the proper terms and usage so as not to offend anyone.

Negro, Colored people, Blacks, African American (Afro), People of Color....everytime the political appropriatness lingo shifts...NYC has to print up new forms for everything!

H-m-m-m...I wonder who's got all those lucrative municipal printing contracts?

Its like the joke about the farming couple that goes on TV, and when the host asks the farmer about growing his crops he keeps referring to "manuring" the fields.

The nervous host tries to ask the farmer to use the word "fertilizer" instead, when the wife breaks in and says, "Shut up you fool, do you know how many years it took me to get him to say manure?"

Be thankful that polite language is used even it if is archaic.
