A Latino Democratic senator says white lawmakers are racist and unfairly targeting state Sen. Hiram Monserrate following his conviction on a misdemeanor assault charge.
Sen. Ruben Diaz, a minister, also notes that none of the Democrats urging Monserrate to quit are Latinos.
From the Daily News:
The first Latinas this morning joined the growing chorus of calls for Sen. Hiram Monserrate to resign.
City Council members Annabel Palma and Melissa Mark-Viverito said Monserrate remaining in office would be "a disservice to his district and his constituents."
Their coming out against Monserrate, their former City Council colleague, dampens some criticism that the effort to get rid of the embattled senator is divided along racial and ethnic lines.
