Paterson says Kosciuszko replacement too expensive

From the Daily News:

The state has put a new price tag on the first phase of the long-awaited project to replace the Kosciuszko Bridge, but it may face a budget speed bump.

The state Department of Transportation released its $25.8 billion, five-year capital program last week, allocating $403.9 million to replace the aging span.

Gov. Paterson said the state can't afford it, with lawmakers struggling to close a $3 billion budget gap, but project supporters urged him not to plead poverty on this one.

Yeah it's too expensive to replace but I guess human lives and safety is too much to ask for when this POS come crashing down.

Lets ask one serious question, is there any need for it to be that high?

Is there any commercial traffic on the newtown creek?

if not then a nice FLAT bridge would be far cheaper and would make the traffic flow more smoothly because the truckers would not have to slow down to climb the present bridge.

Or divert the traffic with a new truck by pass along Laurel hill/ cemetery and a short bridge over the creek and pick up meeker in Brooklyn and back on to the BQE

It would get all the trucks off the bridge and the bridge would not need replacement until we actually have the money to do a real good job.

I'm sure there is some bridge up near Albany that 3 people use a day that he would rather spend the money on.

Blind asshole.

I'll take it one further. JUST FILL IN THE STINKING CREEK!
If we can go to and back from the moon, I'm sure we can fill in that polluted sewer.

I agree. Plus a low-level span could have room for bike lanes which are not practical with the present width and grades...
