5¢ deposits for bottled water start Saturday

From the NY Times:

Starting Saturday, the strapped New York State government will be able to start collecting tens of millions of dollars from deposits on bottled water, after a federal judge’s ruling.

My advice is to drink tap water. Much of the bottled water is tap water anyway. Buy a reusable water bottle and take it with you. Save some cash.

Not unreasonable - The industry should market 2 liter bottles and lower the price to consumers. The single serve bottles are popular for those on the go, thus the bottles most vulnerable to being tossed aside as trash; hence the 5c deposit.

The number one piece of garbage I see littered over the parks is generally single use water bottles. I figure the city is outsourcing it parks maintenance to the bums. Now they can live AND work there.

so you can return the water bottles too and get five cents back? the water bottles are much lighter for some reason.

I havent seen a bum go bottle-picking by my house in years. Its Mexicans/South Americans now. So glad they decided to come here.

I have taken to breaking all my bottles/ and crunching my cans before putting them out to the curb for recycling. They are of no use to them that way, and it stops them from opening my bags (and not re-closing them properly).

I encourage everyone else to do the same.

You should see Flushing. That crazy vietnam guy with the shopping cart/bicycle/wagon contraption collects bottles... actually he collects everything.

There's a decent asian (old) couple who drive around in a grey cadillac 95 model who collect cans/bottles. They get out of the way for people on the go and they even close the bags correctly/properly.

The state hopes the bottles will still be disposed of; they will collect 80% of the unclaimed revenue. It's just another tax on the average consumer, as well as a burden on the businesses required to redeem these bottles.

You left out the part that beverage businesses have to open a bank account that the state has access. What happened to free enterprise? I hope all the water companies get together and not only add the deposit, but raise their case prices by double to prove a point. Great way to get kids to pick up water instead of sugary drinks, raise the prices?

Um, thats a little intense man. I just put the bottle deposit ones in a separate bag so they can just grab it and leave.

Have you noticed that some of the water bottles that have a pull out nipple won't allow you to "screw the cap off" of them? They just spin and spin. Makes you think they don't want you to reuse/refill the bottle for yourself...

I mean we "paid" for the bottle, cap and all, didn't we...? hmmm...
