DEP makes street worse instead of better

From the Times Ledger:

In December, the city Department of Environmental Protection installed two new catch basins and a storm water pipe along 28th Road near the Whitestone Expressway, which the co−ops overlook. The area has been plagued by flooding because of a lack of adequate storm drains and while a sewer restructuring has been planned, funding problems have kept its implementation on the shelf.

Though the catch basins were welcomed by the 3,000 residents of the 13−apartment building community at the time, over the course of the last two weeks their opinion has soured. Several large sinkholes have opened up along the roadway, each lining the temporary asphalt that the DEP laid down after completing the sewer project late last year.

Let's see. This community is represented by John Liu of the NY City Council Transportation Committee and Toby Stavisky is the State Senator. Any questions?

Hey, looks like several catch basins in Astoria!

No, the Astoria ones cave in altogether and leave Man-sized holes for the unwary to step into. Ours are much more dangerous.

Astoria leads the way in death-defying public improvements.

Astorians only care if the taco truck can get through.

They are so lucky - they think their community competes with Manhattan.

Afterall, ever seen a taco truck in the West Side or East Side or Village?

Getting back to the Mitchel-Linden problem, I wonder who hired these incompetent workers and how much is it going to cost taxpayers? Whether the poor work is in Astoria, Flushing, or anywhere else in Queens, it is more than an inconvenience. For example, are the nearby apartment buildings being damaged by the water flow?

Unfortunately much of Queens was reclaimed swamp land. Mother nature is a real b#tch.
