Delay in plan to link Penn and Grand Central

The mammoth $7.2 billion project to extend the LIRR from Penn Station to Grand Central Terminal is not on track to make its February 2015 deadline, according to a new MTA consultant report.

Chronic delays with four contracts put the completion date "under pressure," said the firm McKissack and Delcan.

And delays cost money, transit advocates warned yesterday, saying the federal government won't provide any more than the $6.2 billion already approved for the project.

Great reporting, NY Post.

I assume they are referring to the East Side Access project, which will link JAMAICA station and GRAND CENTRAL. The Penn-Grand Central link was originally an alternative in the Access to the Region's Core (ARC) program, but it was shelved years ago.

If you're going to trash the MTA at least get the facts right.

Instead of an expensive tunnel beneath Midtown to connect Manhattan's two train terminals, Metro North's Hudson and New Haven trains can be diverted to Penn Station using Amtrak tracks.

That was an idea first discussed in 1915!

Divert the traffic across the Hell Gate Bridge into Penn Station.

So the Hell Gate diversion was first proposed in 1915? Why does everything in the city take forever to build?

What's worse is that they had better transportation in 1915 than today. Does anyone remember the Third Avenue El that we are still waiting to see replaced?
