City demolishing certain Willets Point properties

From DNA Info:

Demolition work began last week on a section of Willets Point, the first sign of progress on a multi-billion dollar overhaul from the city and private developers.

The strip of closed auto body shops along 126th Street between 38th and Roosevelt avenues was completely demolished by Tuesday morning by Tully Construction, the project's general contractor.

Workers at shops nearby that are still open said the work began about a week ago, but the main demolition started within the last two days.

The demolished shops have been empty for months, and construction fences for the project went up in April.

Demolition is expected to be completed by Aug. 31, according to the city.

Nice to see that the city is spending money when they don't even know yet what will happen with the property. Remember that pesky lawsuit that stopped the whole thing?

Fences, so they are using the "build it back" method for redevelopment. More like non-development.

this is where the homeless in Queens are going to wind up. It's going to turn into a shantytown slum village. Which might be what city officials and planners are hoping for.

This area should be commercial not residential. A bowling alley, movie theater, food court and small concert space sounds more feasible. The link below is a perfect example.

Build a graveyard for junked crooked politicians to push up hubcaps instead of daisies after their demise.

To the rest of America...who the fuck is Joe Crowley?
LOL....a legend in his own Queens farmyard....a "northern gentleman" striving to be a southerner.
Please do not send him back north. Siberia or Syria, maybe!

Poor "granny" Claire Shulman gets to see her pet Willets Point development project go down the drain before she takes her dirt nap.
I call that poetic justice.
Uh where is that shady Chinaman, Wellington Chen, hiding out these days? He and Shulman were tight.
Is it true that Chen's wife divorced him and he lost his Little Neck home...the one that Shulman helped him get?
Now that would be some truly rich kharma!
Good night, you micro demagogues.

So where are those autobody shops going to go?

Soon people will be bitching about how there are autoshops causing traffic in their neighborhood. Meanwhile, two successive administrations are destroying an industrial neighborhood no one wanted destroyed.

They should let the area go native, like Ridgewood Resevoir.
