Bikes stolen at Flushing Meadows

From A Walk in the Park:

A non-profit bike group which provides free lessons to kids in parks had all of its bikes stolen in a brazen burglary in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Bike New York had thirty-five children and adult Schwinn mountain bikes and accessories — estimated at a total of $10,000 dollars — stolen from a large green container located next to the abandoned iconic 1964 Worlds Fair New York State Pavilion. Thieves also made off with 40 helmets, clothing, and a bike pump.

Instructors discovered the theft on July 5th when they arrived on the first day of Summer camp at around 10:30 in the morning to find the lock missing and the door open. The container's entire contents were cleaned out. The thieves left behind official NYC Cycling Maps and waiver forms strewn around the metal box. According to Bike New York, the camp was supposed to run for seven weeks and reach 120 kids per week, ages nine and up. The group hired instructors to provide free of charge two-hour sessions three times daily to area camps and programs including the Parks Department, PAL and the YMCA. Activities were to include bike driver's ed and, group riding and trips promoting safe bike use.

Another reason why Flushing Meadows will never come close to Central Park.

recently thousands of bike helmets were distributed by politicians, but paid for by your taxes.

were these bikes also paid for by the U.S. taxpayers ?

is this theft a inside job ?

i am guessing that they will quickly be replenished, and maybe stolen again. it is only tax money, that some citizen busted his ass for.

The park is very dark (Defective lighting). There is ZERO police presence, unless ther is a met game or the yearly tennis crap.

How's that sanctuary city thing going?!

Flushing Meadow Park is listed as a "cooping prone location" by the NYPD for the members of the 110 Precinct. They can't be in the park unless they are responding to a job. The logic is that this is supposed to prevent the cops from gong into the park at and finding a dark spot to sleep.

Put out an APB...."Mexican Mercedes" (bikes) stolen!

Uh....let me guess by who....vibrant Latino thieves?

Comb Corona and you'll find them.

Hmmm, I've been wondering why I've seen so many mexicans in Corona with the same Schwinn! Though some have been modified for taco delivery services.

FYI - The organization mentioned in the article is a nonprofit that is not funded by your tax money, but by events it produces and donations. Tax money did not buy these bikes. The people who "busted their asses" are actually the nonprofit staff and volunteers who helped procure the bikes, deliver them to the location, and teach these FREE classes and camps. Do your research before you start spewing ridiculousness.

you did not say who paid for the bike helmets ? Why ?

Can you be specific as to who paid for the bikes ?

A $1.98 padlock for securing $10,000. Genius.

Before Park space was given to USTF by Dinkins, there used to be a police training station at the north end of the park, and it used to patrol the park.

Breaking into a padlocked container in a dark and very desolate park is not exactly a "brazen burglary".

why didn't your group register the bikes with the N.Y.P.D. Crime Unit ?

Did the bikes have Vehicle Identification Numbers on them, or licenses ?
A $285 .00 item should not have been left in the park.

This had to be a inside job, with trucks to steal the bikes.

Did your group place signs on the enclosure advertising the contents?

Trucks? 35 bikes = one truck needed. Rent one at any uhaul or enterprise for probably under $100

Is this unexpected? Since the beginning of time in Flushing Meadows Park, bicycle muggings some brutal have been occurring daily. The place is poorly Policed and although the park is perfect for bicycling it is ripe and perfect for violent muggings to steal your bike and worse such as rape and murder!!!!

I think this was an inside job.

Someone who works there would known that they were being delivered -

shame.

Yep especially by the creek and lake area. I like to ride in that park then hit King of Corona I have a 28 inch carbon fiber lightweight. The brown animals and bucks size me up all the time with not a cop in sight.
I carry 2 automatic knifes one on my ankle and 1 on my wristband. The only time I see the cops in that park is during the US Open.
They give out tickets for smoking, professional photography & stupid stuff as well as escort players to cars and VIP areas.

Some of those F_ers and vagrants in that park are nomad crazy
If attacked on a bike the best thing to do is ram them head on HARD (this keeps you balanced) Then jam or quickly push up on the nose with the heel of your wrist as hard as possible. ---then back off before the blood gushes out and split.

Every Monday morning around 4 AM a bus from the Rikers nut ward drops 30 or so wack jobs off at Queens Plaza. They get $10 and a 2 trip metro-card. The first thing most do is hop the 7 train to Flushing Meadow park.
The place has become a sanctuary for the mentally ill homeless
