Open the door, Eliot!

From the Daily News:

Rep. Eliot Engel and a business partner have repeatedly ignored city efforts to shut down an illegal apartment at a Bronx building they own, the Daily News has learned.

One city agency cited the owners of 1142 Metcalf Ave. in early 2009, and since then inspectors repeatedly tried to investigate complaints that the illegal unit never went away.

Again and again, Engel and his business partner ignored them, and the initial violation remains open, records show.

Six times since 2009, Buildings Department inspectors door-knocked the six-unit building owned by Engel, (D-Bronx/Westchester), and his partner, local businessman Harry Bajraktari.

Each time they couldn't get in, so each time they left notices instructing the owners to contact the agency to arrange an appointment - six notices in all since 2009. The latest visit took place last month.

Each time, city officials say, the owners ignored the request.

So..the DOB attempts to enforce the law by use of polite language? How about we give these guys the force of crimminal law to kick doors in and crack these MFs on their mellons? Bet that solves the problem.

Like it or not, we have private property laws in this nation.

Its a double edged sword, yes, as it lets shit like this happen, but the other 99% of the time, it protects your own rights, and it does it quite well.

I dont like this situation any more than you do, but i'm damn glad that the idea of Private Property is one of the cornerstones of this nation.

Politicians are above the law. When are people going to understand that the laws DONT apply to them, only the little people? This happens all the time and nothing is ever done about it. Come election time, the same shit gets voted in over and over again. Time to move out of NYC.

Hey listen. Give Engel a break. He's a busy guy getting his Groucho Marx mug ready for the cameras at the State of the Union. More important things to do than this.

Super Halal Meat Market 253-06 Hillside Avenue in Bellerose Qns, This store should never have been allowed to open in Bellerose. This store was expanded, renovated and opened without getting any city permit. Some permits were only obtained when inspectors finally responded to our many complaints. The owners of this store have tried to fit a Stop and Shop supermarket in a space that should be a mom and pop deli. With all the open violations the DOB could have prevented the destruction of another great block in Queens.
It’s funny the DOB can write a million summonses but they can't collect or enforce one. Nice system for building owners who don’t care about a neighborhood. Lousy system if you’re homeowners who can’t open your windows or enjoy your backyard anymore. This store is clearly in violation of many zoning laws that could easily be corrected if only the New York City Buildings Department would do their job.
Good luck my fellow New Yorkers, we don’t have a chance

HA! try not paying your taxes. Try not repairing the sidewalk and other public responsibilities...result: fines and levies.

Oh, and that mortgage and insurance.

The system isn't working. Blame it on Mayor Bloomberg and his administration. The city has no money, lets cut services and layoff city employees. Im not a genius but maybe the city can collect some money from all the violations the Buildings Department issues.
