Merchants want parking restrictions eased along Queens Blvd

From the Daily News:

Sunnyside merchants are urging the city to change parking rules on Queens Blvd. so that it becomes a shopping destination instead of a thoroughfare for out-of-borough drivers.

Officials and business owners are asking the city to eliminate the current no-parking rule between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

They also want the municipal parking lots under the 7-train tracks to be reduced from 12-hour spots to four-hour spots to discourage commuters from hogging spaces.

The current no-parking rules are in place to facilitate rush-hour traffic, an agency spokeswoman said.

But the restriction kills morning business, merchants said, especially from 39th to 49th Sts. where they are proposing the changes.

you would hope elected officials could help get us some jobs instead of getting news ads about parking. everyone knows that all those bars and restaurants make their real money friday and saturday nights. who cares about parking otherwise ?

I have lived in Woodside for 57 years. I have an entire generation of family who lives with me here, proud Local 45 members from blood to sawdust. If Councilman Van Bramer wants to do favors for Kiernan and Daisy, God bless Him, but i am not falling for that baloney. Get some help in our schools please. and some jobs around here. The bars are doing fine. what about my monthly car bills. Mr. Van Bramer may have just moved here, but we could smell bullshit a mile away. God. bless.

I am very disapointed with Councilman VanBramer. We gave our vote to Jimmy and live in the Gardens and we have been to his parties but ..... he doesnt seem to stand for anything. I read NY1 and the Gazette but it doesnt seem like he does anything. Very low key. Goyia had like a big feelin gof excitement and fun for this wonderful part of queens, I consider myself a pioneer. Where are our cool promenda parks and restaurants and some places to shop please !! he just seems like an old lady sometimes.

Municipal parking is necessary for the survival of merchants and businesses in Sunnyside....

while in Flushing the city is selling it's vital Muni Lot #1 to private interests from Shanghai....the TDC Rockefeller Group (tight with Wellington Z. Chen).

TDC, CB#7, Boro Hall, BSA, local pols, etc. to Flushing's merchants:

"DROP DEAD"!

Nothing to do with this post....
yet that's a touching sentiment you've expressed regarding the RKO Keith's.

But, sadly, there's nothing left to save of its once grand auditorium.

Only the lobby and great foyer are left.

RIP and Amen.

Van Bamer is for the library (whose board is filled with developer types) and lavishes larges sums of money on questionable projects ($250,000 for a reading room in Woodside, $30 million for a kids space in Jamaica?) while other worthy groups in the community are starved for funds.

Sunnyside is heavily Catholic and wanted to elected a local boy who always seemed approachable.Jimmy's interest is gay marriage and now seems pleased to pose with developers who rape communities.

Hey, I want a career in politics. With role models like that to sit next to you on City Council, who wouldn't?

We can accomplish so much together!

Jimmy Van Brammer and Danny Dromm should get together.....LOL!

Between the two of them they've got plenty of experience butt-f-----g their communities.

The Koch Bridge and gay marriage is on everyone's short list, right?

Jimmy is interested in developing the real estate values so that Sunnyside looses it nice character and starts to look like Astoria or that other bastard of City Planning, Dutch Kills.

Right now they are looking how to start development in Ravenswood.

Sunnyside, which has a stronger community (and dare we say a bit more horsepower between the ear lobes, is next)

Watch Jimmy in the press. See who he buddies with and what their community's look like.

Then take heed.

I distrust any politician who tries to cozy-up to constituents by pretending to be one of the common folk.

i.e.
His district office sign reads
"Jimmy" (not James) Van Brammer.

So....LOL...."little Jimmy"....pretends to one of us....huh?

Take your role seriously councilman!

Nobody else I've seen who holds a responsible public office posts his nick name.

Maybe he wants to improve quick
turnover parking conditions for his friends "cruising" the local bars.

12 hour parking is a long term relationship and we know how most gays prefer shorter ones.

"Am I missing something or are those morons sitting in empty spots ?"

What you are missing is the sign that reads no standing 7 am to 10 am. All that traffic passing by at those hours, but no where to quickly stop for a cup of coffee or something to eat.

that's it, add massive development along that corridor and take away driving lanes - they will end up bike lanes.

no one does anything for queens residents unless there is some agenda.

I'll let everyone in on a little secret. On the left of that photo is an elevated structure that transports millions of people all over the city for $2.25 a trip. There are two train stations just a few short stops in either directions. Regardless of how we all might feel about the NYC subway, it is very often more convenient than travelling by car.

Anonymous said...

Yes, and all the deliveries needed for the people is always transported by train.

Anonymous said...

If it was more convenient, everybody would be taking it, and it would then be unbearable for everyone. Not everyone is going straight to midtown.

-----------------------------------
According to the article, the merchants are concerned about their potential customers being able to park there. Deliveries can do what they have been doing for decades; double and triple parking at will.

-----------------------------------
I take the 7 at least a couple of dozen times a week. You are going to tell me that it isn't too convenient to take the 7 say, from 74/Broadway to 46/ Bliss or 40/Lowery, and not have to worry about finding a parking spot, or worry if your meter is about to expire?

Queens Crapper said...

And you think the people driving live along the 7 train? Is there parking at those other stations? Why does everyone in this town assume that because mobility is easy for them then it must be easy for everyone no matter where they live?

Anonymous said...

No one is saying that mass tranist is convenient for everyone. The main point of this article is the argument by the merchants that their businesses are hurting because a few dozen parking spots aren't freed up for their customers. Aside from the business these stores get from local residents, the amount of customers the trains and buses can provide is FAR more than the amount of customers that will be gained by a few more parking spots.

Queens Crapper said...

Except that businesses make money from people who park their cars there just like they do from people who ride the train or bus. Why not accommodate them all? Really stupid to be handicapping businesses in this economy.

Anonymous said...

Do you understand that the people taking the bus or train are not the ones being driven away from the businesses, it's the ones who drive that are? Your argument makes no sense whatsoever, anonymous. No one is suggesting that it's an either-or proposition between mass transit and cars.

Anonymous said...

Nobody gets off the train to go downstairs, grab a drink, and get back on the train to continue their to their destination. People passing by in cars stop for these businesses. People passing by on the train don't.

Anonymous said...

when is the developement of downwton queens plaza gonna start ? that area is still a shithole with topless bars and jamaican patty joints. at least there, you dont need parking.

Anonymous said...

oh geez who cares about all this parking baloney. its just a news opportunity for politicains who aint working on important stuff. can you get the guy dowen my block to turn down his goddam stereo and can you get me a raise ???????? ill figire out where to park to get my beers.

I think his point is that this isn't a rural area, there are alternatives in Queens to driving everywhere. How much business could they possibly be losing from the lack of parking spaces? I understand doing something about people parking under the train all day while they are at work in Manhattan, but if a business in Western Queens is depending so much on business from people who drive, then they really opened up in the wrong place!

Anonymous said...

They found out on Steinway Street that a lot of the parking spots goes to the merchants and their employees.

FIRE MARKEY !! FIRE VANBREMER !!

Van Bamer takes his 'suggestions' from Cathy Nolan.

You're kidding, right? Western Queens is the gateway to Manhattan. Ed Koch-Queensboro Bridge ... hello?

Ah, now I see why Staunton had that free gay wedding reception contest. He's looking to get on Van Bramer's good side so he can start getting things his way. Maybe Quinn's, too. Wonder if he is thinking of running for political office?
