Abolish member items!

From the Daily News:

When city government puts contracts or grants out to bid, New Yorkers have every right to expect that all qualified applicants will have the same chance of winning an award.

That's how things work - except in the City Council.

There, Speaker Christine Quinn and her members only pretend that everyone who applies for so-called member item funding - for Little Leagues, senior centers and other local programs - has an equal shot at success.

In fact, as far as the Council is concerned, some New Yorkers are much more equal than others.

Those who live in districts represented by Quinn's allies bring home far more money than do members who have broken ranks with the speaker. And the needs of any particular community are irrelevant as the speaker divides a $50 million annual pie.

...as has been said time and again, the solution is to abolish member items entirely.

Even within district, the members themselves will play the same game with their constituents giving money to donors that have many sources of funds while starving worthy groups who often have merely the crime of thinking.

One of the reasons that culturally, Queens is a 'dead zone' on creativity (unless its tweeder themed)

I've been talking about this for over 4 years.
It just amount to " Legal BRIBERY " & CORRUPTION .
It makes a Community Board a Cesspool of political corruption.

Why just "abolish liberal progressive members..."? Ultra right wing Ullrick scoffed down a lot of pork too. Abolish it all.

I think we all have to understand that it's not just the so called Liberals. It's been reported here before that Republican Councilman Dan Halloran was able to help secure $500,000 for a pet project for one of his big donors in Whitestone and provide the guys wife with an office in the same building he is in. Libs or conservatives, their all thieves today.

Hey, lets abolish the entire city council. Imagine how much money the taxpayers could save if they didn't have to pay the salaries of these useless hacks and their staffs.

It'll never appen...member items allow incumbents, touting their ability to bring home pork to voters, to get re-elected by wide margins.

can Q. C. detail the member items amounts for the past three cm elections of Queens members. And compare which political party scored the most taxpayer money.

was not there a "slush fund" scandal recently, with phony groups receiving the money ?

Years ago NYC didn't have a city council and didn't have the budgetary problems they have now. I think the city council should be disbanded. Does the city really need these people? The city would save a ton of money without them.
