Von Westernhagen's 1964-2010?

Some of you may have already read this on Lost City, but here's the original scoop sent to my inbox:

"Stopped by [Von Westernhagen's] last night on a whim and the bartender told me [it was closing]. They were taking lots of pictures of customers and it was busy with tons of folks stopping in to say hi to Ernie and Mama.

So damn sad.

They sold to someone, but I didn't get any details."

Ich weiss nicht was soll es bedeuten
Dass ich so traurig bin.
Ein Lokal aus uralten Zeiten.
Es kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

Being so close to Zum Stam tisch, its not surprisng this establishment is closing. Neiderstein's, Durow's, Sammet's, Karl Ehmer deli at Cooper and Myrtle just folded too. Sad sign of cultural change.

It's true...2 German places in such close proximity...one has to suffer.
But it is sad when the doors close on a good establishment ;-(

anyone else find it funny that, this time around, the Polish are moving in and the Germans are the ones getting forced out? ;)

Polish? Try Spanish.

I live nearby, and, well, i dont see them.

What i do see is eastern euro trash with shaved heads all over the place.

The former Sals Sweet Shop, The bakeries, that store next to CVS... all polish/Slavic.

They are moving east from Greenpoint as the hipsters price them out.

When their president died in that plane crash there were polish flags everywhere.

Take the M train in the morning. All you hear is polish/slavic as all the hens cluck at eachother all the way into manhattan.

Plus, there was that albanian wedding i saw going on a few weeks ago. Not in a church or a nice hall or anything like that, but on the stoop of a house and in the street, complete with stereo blasting music that sounds like it came from the 'Borat' soundtrack.

Bunch of street urchins.

Polish and "Slavic" as in Croat or Bosnian, are very different. And the M goes through Ridgewood, which is where most of them live.

Many albanians aare muslim.......go figure. I would not compare them to any other eastern europeans.

There certainly is an excess of pizza and Asian fare, not to mention Glendale Diner and McD's,all nearby, so if it retains its restaurant status, it should be interesting to see who takes it. I'm guessing a conversion to residential.

My guess is it'll go upscale/bistro/wine bar... and fail in less than a year.

What would everyone like to see there after von w's?

Sad indeed.. though I was pretty sore with them when they stopped serving waffle fries.

Hmm.. What will go there? I agree, restaurant would be too risky.

I often question whether that whole intersection area is good or bad. It seems good from virtually every angle.. until I lived right there (70th & Cooper) and you can see that it is a lot of "through" traffic... though maybe that is just the nature of the stores.
