Ladybug invasion!

From NY1:

Some unwelcome visitors swarm an apartment in Kew Gardens, Queens, as residents say hundreds of ladybugs descended on some of their balconies.

Local say the insects are becoming a big nuisance.

"It's hard because I want to leave my balcony door open. I'm trying to clean, and they're all flying in. I had to close the door, so it's been very inconvenient for me," said a local. "It's just gross, because they're flying on you and getting in your hair, your shirt. You get itchy, gross."

NY1 reached out to a few area pest control and landscaping companies, and they say ladybugs are known to move about this time of year due to the rainy weather.

They may also be attracted to light-colored buildings.

Experts say ladybugs pose no risk and are beneficial for gardens.

From what friends out there have told me -bedbugs- are the bigger problem.

I repaired a bose home theater system for a Mex friend in Jackson Heights in '08 and the sub had several live ones.

Last Tuesday there was a mattress thrown out with the word "bugs" on it, one block away on east 81st between Park and Mad aves.

Ladybugs will be gone after the first sustained frost.

Hail the Ladybug!

Inconvenient little thing but necessary for nature!

Close the door stupid!

After we get rid of all the bugs, we go next.

These are the same people who don't like trees because of all the leaves that fall off, but don't sweat the litter that people create. DON'T LITTER!!!

Leave the trees and the bugs to a Higher Authority.

Don't you have a screen door on your balcony?

Lady bugs, I believe, eat mosquitos that can cause West Nile virus.

Honestly....some folks are too timid to live in the real world.

Like...they're not cockroaches...get over it.

I suggest moving to Disneyland where life is just perfect.

Ladybug! Ladybug!
Fly away home.
Your house is on fire.
And your children all gone.

All except one,
And that's little Ann,
For she crept under
The frying pan.

Take pity on these cute little creatures.

People actually pay money to buy ladybugs for their gardens.

If it bothers them so much, they should take out the vaccuum cleaner, reverse the airflow so that it blows instead of sucks and send them flying off the porch. Then shut the screens.

Ladybugs will feed on aphids and other small but destructive insects that destroy ornamentals and vegetables. Perhaps our city neighbors should give them some leeway and ponder what it would be like without their services.
By the way Leno, they hibernate during the winter.

Maspeth Mom..

I purchase ladybugs at Garden World in Bayside every year for my garden. They are useful and beautiful little creatures - if one gets in my home, my kids carefully remove it and put it outside. I always consider myself lucky if a ladybug lands on me.
Why do you feel that it is okay to destory a living thing? All living things have a purpose on this Earth.

Actually these people are not crazy. There is a species of ladybug imported from Asia that has become a real pest.

These ladybugs seek out the heat of a home to overwinter in and after several growth cycles they can form massive swarms.

Just goes to show what happens when we "improve" on nature. No such problem with our native lady bugs.
