Feds' giant drug bust

From the Wall Street Journal:

Federal agents arrested more than 300 people in a two-day sweep of the methamphetamine-trafficking operations of Mexico's La Familia drug cartel, a fast-growing group the government said has reached deep into the U.S.

Prosecutors in New York, Dallas and dozens of other cities unveiled indictments against some of the senior leadership of La Familia, which means "the family" in Spanish and is one of Mexico's newer cartels.

The sweep and indictments culminated a 44-month operation during which the Justice Department arrested about 1,200 people and seized nearly 12 tons of drugs as well as $32.8 million in U.S. currency, Attorney General Eric Holder said. Officials said they disrupted La Familia cells across the U.S., including distribution hubs in Texas, Kansas, Georgia and New York.

"While this cartel may operate from Mexico, the toxic reach of its operations extends to nearly every state in the country," Mr. Holder said, adding that La Familia was notable for its "sheer level and depravity of violence." In July, after the arrest of several La Familia leaders, authorities in Mexico discovered the bodies of 11 slain Mexican law-enforcement officers.

City Journal reports how cartel influenced law enforcement corruption is crossing the border as well.

Like the Anarchists of 100 years ago, we opne our borders to the great unwashed to exploit them and when a handful start to shoot at the rich will be clamp down and shut the door again.

Nothing we can do if shots are regular fired at night in Corona. Let one or two incidents flair up in Brooklyn Heights and we have an epidemic.

So why don't the Feds sweep the illegals who buy and sell these drugs off our streets in Jackson Heights? Seems that we ignore a comprehensive solution to combat Mexican Drug gangs. We only take out chunks of their operation and those grow back 2x as strong.

Excellent! Another perfect example of the incisive reasoning I've come to expect from the commenters here.

Yes, those pesky anarchists nearly obliterated the Republic, didn't they? How did the weak-willed, pansy-ass democratic citizens of this country ever defeat the handful of unrulys, with their "don't wanna"s and "can't make me"s? Not to mention (this line of argument could only benefit from the comparison to) Orson Welles and the other blacklisted Hollywood Reds. They nearly got us, too! Citizen Kane? Commie propaganda.

Now it's the narcoterrorists from Southoftheborder, who obviously - and rationally - desire to exterminate every man, woman and child who comprise the consumption market for their illegal drug trade. Especially the rich in, say, Brooklyn Heights, because everyone knows their money is no good in Mayheeko. Clearly the American Everyman Who Minds His Own Business is at great peril now that these bloodlusty brownskins have permeated every corner of our society.

Since we believe with 100% conviction that we know who the Bad Guy is, let's all grab our pitchforks an' go out an' git that Osama Bin Suarez!!!

You do realize that anarchists blew up factories, crowds, etc, right?

Maybe I do, and maybe I don't.

My point is they were limited in number, never a serious threat to us AS A NATION, and ultimately a bad analogy to the current drug thugs.

It is not in the drug cartels' interests to carry out mass killings of innocent bystanders. Their profits rely on getting as many of us as possible to use their products. So the victims of narcomurders are usually other low- or high-level thugs caught up in "the trade".

If we're seriously concerned about this as a society, as a nation, then we need to examine not the symptoms but the cause - illicit drug use. Anyone here like to snort a little coke or smoke a joint now and then? Unless you're DIY, you're supporting these guys.

Either you do, or you don't. There is no "maybe". Anarchists were not a threat to the country only in retrospect. They certainly intended to destroy capitalism and were taken quite seriously at the time.

The victims of the drug trade are the kids that get hooked on their stuff and die.

Okay, so we're in agreement. The anarchists are yesterday's news and Brooklyn Heights has nothing to do with this. The real issue is drug use, and how to keep kids (and adults) off the stuff. Mexican drug cartels are only interested in the US because because our kids (and adults) buy their product.

no, the point was that if it happened in brooklyn heights, they'd do something about it. the great unwashed don't move there so the city looks the other way.
