A 200-foot-tall crane buckled and partially collapsed under the weight of an oversized load Friday at a condo construction site in Tribeca, officials said.
The collapse did not cause any injuries, but several buildings neighboring 450 Washington St. were evacuated temporarily.
Neighbors said the construction of the 300-unit building has been moving at breakneck speed since early last month.
"You could hear the metal falling," said witness Naomi Romero, 40. "We thought the whole thing was going to come down."
The Buildings Department halted work at the site and plans to issue violations against the crane operator, a spokeswoman said.
