Take your signs and shove 'em!

From Sunnyside Post:

Carole Vance, a local Sunnyside resident, spent most of her Saturday afternoon tearing down illegal signs that had been attached to neighborhood lampposts.

Vance and her husband, Larry, took down 11 signs that directed people to call Acapulco Rentals, a Jackson Heights agency that offers apartments for rent. At least, 30 signs were erected by Acapulco Rentals late last week.

Vance notified Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer’s office about the problem.

On Tuesday, Van Bramer’s office told Vance that he had called the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to have enforcement officers come and remove the illegal signs. Furthermore, Van Bramer, in an e-mail to this publication, said that he had directed the DSNY to issue summons to the responsible party.

As a result, 13 signs were taken down and 13 summonses were issued to Acapulco Rentals. Each summons carried a fine of $75, which resulted in a total penalty of $975, according to Van Bramer’s office. His office asked the public to call 718-383-9566 if any other signs.

Great Job Carole. Hopefully you have just spread the word that you put them up and we will take them down.

I take them down all the time in my neighborhood (Briarwood) when I walk my dog at 5 in the morning. i figure if they disappear fast it takes away the motivation to put them up.

While I agree that these signs are an illegal blight, what's to stop someone from putting up signs advertising their competitor to stick them with the fines? Place the signs, then have someone call and complain.
That said, I'm tired of seeing "Out of shape?" signs from tiger shulmans karate all over the place.

*applause* I'm often tearing down the "Se Renta una cuarto por mujer" flyers in my neighborhood.

way to go, Carol. they started with that crap in Woodside 61st street on telephone poles, street lights, mail boxes, any available space.

maybe Van Breemer's office ought to find out if that real estate company has a license. isn't it the Dept of Transportation that gives summons & fines for putting flyers and posters up on street light poles? maybe call the post office to complain too, because the same people are putting their advertising on post offices and mail boxes.

Anon No. 3:

That was the Bil-Ray siding defense of a few decades ago. They were finally called out, and it stopped.

Bravo...good job!

Come to Flushing and help us pull down all those Chinese "rub jont" signs!

Do you think I can Get Councilman Koo to push DSNY into issuing summonses to the offending Asian business who are putting up all these signs?

I'm doubtful!

I was inspired this morning so i pulled up a lawn sign on 71st Ave. in Forest Hills. One of those "Make $$$ working at home" signs. Now it's in the trash can at the LIRR station.
