Double-dipping legislators

MYFOXNY.COM - When most people retire, they leave their job, but not some New York lawmakers. A number of them are double dipping: collecting a salary and a pension.

Fox 5's Arnold Diaz got some details on Albany's dirty little secret. His investigation determined that 16 lawmakers are currently collecting a state pension as a retired legislator when it fact they're still on the job getting their full salary.

State legislators can legally double dip as long as they joined the state retirement system before 1995, have at least five years of service, and are at least 65 years old.

Other lawmakers say that loophole should be closed.

Don't close the loophole, just enact term limits, that will kill two birds with one stone.

Nice hustling, Arnold. Thanks for a great piece.

Public sector pensions have to change. The costs are pulling the country down.
My suggestion is to treat a public pension like a 401K. When a person retires, provide a cash value in a government fund fund. The retire should be free to roll it over into another 401K/IRA if they want. But the rules apply just like IRA/401K funds for everyone else, such as penalties for premature withdrawal.

Speaking of double-dipping....
Is it true that public school teachers receive unemployment checks during the summer?

No - that's not true.

the democrat majority in the ny state assembly will never vote for this bill.

avella's co-sponsor of it is moot.

What about the RepubCon majority in the State Senate? What will they do?

the bill will die in the nys assembly.

And if it doesn't it won't go anywhere in the NYS Senate. Look at how Dean Skelos bailed out on non-partisan redistriciting.

They just want to keep power. Look at how both parties were willing to cut a deal with Pedro Espada and Hiram Monserrate (no pun intended).
