Millions in taxpayer $ spent on cars and drivers

From the NY Post:

While the rest of us tighten our belts, state employees buckle up in free cars provided to them by the state - paid for and gassed up with $86 million in taxpayer money this fiscal year alone, a Post probe has found.

State department heads and commissioners are the most privileged, getting their own drivers and cars from the state's fleet of nearly 14,000 vehicles. But thousands of other workers also get to use state sedans, SUVs and minivans, instead of their own wheels, to do their jobs - with some even given state gas cards and permission to take the cars home.

It turns out the State Liquor Authority is the worst offender. And most do not pay taxes on it like they are supposed to.

What The Post wouldn't get too upset about:

Again, the GOP federal and statewide are always vigilant in complaining about "creeping socialism"....but well...you know...

Refusing to pay taxes they owe on these benefits?

They are just lobbying to get appointments in the Obama administration.

Work less. Produce less (or destroy more). Get greater benefits.

It's not just the CUNY Chancellor that gets free use of a city automobile -- it's also the various Vice Chancellors. (And CUNY has a lot of Vice Chancellors.)

Aside from the free cars given to these big shots, what about the official city license plates? If these agencies didn't have official plates and had to pay for parking tickets, think of all the revenue the city could/would take in. Even the Queens Borough Public Library, which according to its website "is an independent, not-for-profit corporation and is not affiliated with any other library system," has what looks like about 2-3 dozen sedans and trucks, all with official license plates. They take up a sizeable chunk of the parking meters around the Central Library in Jamaica, as well as the "No Parking" side of 90th Avenue, even though they have a driveway behind the library. Think of all the money being lost through the parking tickets that they don't receive (or have to pay). Not to mention why "an independent, not-for-profit corporation" should have official city license plates in the first place.

NYS must end this practice. In private industry receipts for reimbursement are submitted for taking a car service or milage on one's own car if incurred. The State cars for these commishners should be sold (with caveat not to NYS employees or family).
