Old hospital to become senior housing

From The Real Deal:

The New York State Housing Finance Agency has issued a request for proposals from developers interested in purchasing a site in Howard Beach, Queens, to develop affordable housing for senior citizens. The site is 3.4 acres at 155-55 Cross Bay Boulevard, and there are currently two structures, totaling 111,000 square feet, on the property. The developer would need to convert these structures into 100 affordable housing units, 80 of them studios or one-bedroom apartments for low- to moderate-income people over age 60, according to a statement issued today by the housing finance agency. The remaining units would be for people supported by the Office of Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities, which operates the site's current buildings.

This was formerly Howard Park General Hospital, which closed down decades ago, but for some reason Google Maps still thinks is active.

What is the former hospital used for now? The parking lot is full on a daily basis but I never seem to see people coming or going. Nobody in the neighborhood seems to know what it's currently used for either...

I live in Howard Beach and I'm tired of close-minded people like Anonymous #1 acting like fools.

This would be nice as long as it is developed properly. NYC is short on elderly housing... I have been trying to get my mother into housing in NYC for a while but the waiting lists are long and the apts. are a far cry in quality from the elderly apartment she has in Suffolk county Long Island now which is gorgeous...

A lot of older people don't have much money left like my mother and the rents go according to their social security and what savings they have...

Well its short on landmarks and and churces and parking and playgrounds and infrastructure and all sorts of things - these are senior barracks designed for one purpose: to empty out rent controlled apartments.

They are blockbusters at 9 or 15 stores totally built out of scale (like everything else in Astoria) opening the doors to similar for profit monster like those favored by Pistilli.

There are programs for seniors where they can enjoy the comfort of their home - why do they have to be warehoused like all the other marginal members of society?

If they did not sit on stablized or controlled apartments these advocates could give two shits about them.

At present it is a residence for developmentally disabled persons and is underutillized. It was where the Willowbrook people were sent before being placed into group homes.

Now those "good-fellas" will have to get their lead slugs dug out further away from home.

Maybe it'll wind up becoming an
old age home for mobsters
(provided they live long enough).

And if "Russo's On The Bay" gets the food service concession...
I might consider retiring there myself.

Damed great eats!
