(CBS) NEW YORK A Queens City Councilman is facing serious allegations after police investigators were called to his office to conduct a search Monday.
Councilman Dennis Gallagher's office was nearly deserted on Tuesday after police arrived to investigate sexual assault allegations against him, CBS 2 HD has learned.
Police spent hours yesterday combing through his office, even digging through his garbage cans. Sources say investigators had a search warrant and were hunting for evidence of blood and other potentially incriminating materials.
Sources tell CBS 2 that a female who is not an employee of Gallagher's has made the allegations against the councilman, who is married with two children.
His attorney says Gallagher has not been questioned, nor has he been been charged with anything. "He denies any assaulting behavior against anyone," said the attorney, Stephen Mahler. "I'm sure that Mr. Gallagher will ultimately be vindicated in this investigation."
Gallagher, one of only three Republicans on the City Council, wasn't at his office Tuesday and no one answered his door at home.
His neighbors tell CBS 2 they're skeptical of the allegations. "I could never imagine anything like that against him in regard to that because he's been my neighbor for many years and he's the greatest guy in Middle Village," said Lisa Ferranti.
At the City Council, the speaker's office was trying to sort through the facts of the case today.
Meanwhile, no comment yet from Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, who may hold the key to Gallagher's fate.

The cops haven't commented yet on why they were there. For people to be so sure of the accusations, its looking more and more like a set up......
Dennis Gallagher has been sexually harassing women for over a decade.
This is only the tip of the iceberg.
Gallagher can't help himself. He's been sexually molesting women since his days as chief of staff of Ognibene. That's the only way he can get a woman.
Anyone who thinks this guy could be innocent has his head up his ass.
