Bayside nabes seek landmarking

Residents of two Bayside neighborhoods are learning that it’s not so easy seeking district landmark status.

Potential years of research, fundraising and lots of footwork are just the beginning for those pursuing landmarking in the Weeks Woodlands and Bellcourt areas of Bayside. Residents of a third neighborhood — Lawrence-Montauk — are also showing interest, but are not quite as organized, according to Paul DiBenedetto, who is leading the landmarking drive.

Baysiders Continue Pursuing Landmarking

The idea is to help prevent tear downs and inappropriate alterations to existing homes, which DiBenedetto believes is a real threat. He started organizing neighbors in January. “Even with rezoning, the areas are all in jeopardy,” he said. “Rezoning only slows it down.”

Yeah, and isn't it interesting how HDC and MAS etc takes this in stride. Afterall, that is not a problem in the few communities where the Junior League can amass a group of volunteers from Wellesley to go out and do the leg work over a summer.

I also like how they campaign to add a few dollars to the LPC budget. Not too much now!

We don't want to make it too easy, eh boys, cause all those beer drinking low-lifes from Queens may come to a presevation mixer and want refreshments. The horror!
