Does look like the back of a shophouse in BKK, or most S.E. Asian cities.

I see these all over Queens and Brooklyn in the last twenty years.

The real question is: What was there before, and what did the previous owner sell the property for?

Those owners who bought a single fam det. for $40K in 1973 later demanded and got 14 times that 6 years ago are the real culprits.

These are mostly happening in working, low/middle class areas and those areas can never attract the kind of individual buyer who'll pay $600K+ for a (often old) house -so you get teardowns and redevelopment like this.

Other than trying to lock this sort of thing out via zoning, there isn't much to be done here.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. IT'S THE ZONING, STUPID.

Isn't this not too far from the Leonard P. Stavisky School....built on contaminated land that had never undergone proper remediation?

This could be many other areas in Queens. No different from Corona, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst....

I drove by here the other day. It's such an eyesore. There are always cars parked up on the sidewalk. How do they not get ticketed every day?

I've been saying it for 2 years on this blog already.

Cowardly Irish and Italians who sold their homes at the sight of minorities.

Union Street blockbusting was the initiating catalyst.

Welcome to the third world! Didn't have to travel to a foreign country to see and experience it.

There was a factory here before these were built moron.

And of course it always goes back to it being whitey's fault.

i love the obviously WORK vehicle/van parked in a residential area.

Anon 3: Yes its right nextdoor

Queenscrap: Wrong... from my recollection it was a gas station on the corner there of Linden and 31

If you smelt how bad the sewer was over there (I see DEP working there at least once a week) you'd understand why only trash would live there and why it looks the way it does. Its a horrific smell

Well whichever one of us is correct on what was there previously, this didn't come about because someone got scared that minorities were moving in. Gas station - great. I'm sure it was cleaned up properly...

That area was always light industrial/warehouse and was never nice that I can remember. The new elementary school is right behind those buildings. I drove past them earlier, the back of the building actually looks much nicer, no balconies, no graffiti, just cars parked in the alley behind. This is a horrendous area to live in. Lousy public transit and no street parking. I am amazed how many new apartment buildings they have built in the area and am even more surprised that even the asian immigrants are willing to pay big money to live there.
Have you seen what has become of the area around the North Flushing Swim Club?? They have sold off several parcels of land over the years and the club is now completely surrounded by apartment buildings. Again, hardly any street parking.

And the Con Ed yard down the block on 32nd Ave is a superfund sight I believe.

Thank you for not mentioning my nearby North Flushing Senior Center. I don't need anyone looking into my "private bank".

With this part of Flushing once you head west and cross 137th street it becomes crap... a bunch of Queens Crap.. which has encroached right up against Mitchell-Linden which now serves as the buffer between Queens Crap and the nicer FLushing east of Union Street

It was once part of the same parcel of land. It was owned by one of the Seven Giants, Lung Fong Chen who sub-divided it.

Lets call it "The Lawless side of Town". Where is the police to give out parking tickets, where is the sanitation dept.? , the insurance home inspectors, the clean-up crew for the prostitution! there is non of this, because these same city and private servants are most likely part of the clientell. Does anyone recall in the late 80's early 90's, the captain of the 109th Precint got transferred because he was protecting the brothels and gamblings on Union St, Roosevelt Ave, etc, etc,;....
