An 18 wheeler or Elizabeth Crowley?

18 wheelers turn onto 80th street all the time, every day. There is a sign indicating no truck route except delivery.

Answer: A two-year old on a 3-wheeler.

How dare you insult the 18 wheeler!

In Staten Island a grade-school student was hit yesterday by one of these huge trucks. Stupid, stupid, stupid> the City DoE built a new school right next to an off ram for I278 - the ramp used (illegally? don't see any trace of waivers granted for the State's 53foot rule...) for trucks going to the container-port. Stupid.

PS - the girl from Staten Island died. Add to the poor planning involved the cut-back in yellow bus service...

Dizzy Lizzy looks like a deer in head lights.....

That's a tough question, it may be a toss up.

However, I would say the 18 wheeler is more useful to society since it carries vital goods while Dizzy Lizzy carries just a lot of baggage.

I hope Elizabeth Crowley runs for Weiner's seat. Boy will the press have a field day with this bimbo's background.

yeah just what we need in the 9th congressional district, another sex scandal.

Elizabeth Crowley makes George W Bush look like a linguistic. A blow up doll has more brains and is sexier. Liz, go back to school, hire a stylist, and lose some weight.

It is unacceptable that with all the development going on in our City, there is no planning for vehiclur traffic especially commerical.

A little girl died in Staten Island , others throughout the City have been injured, and or put in harms way..

Accidents have happened where by the Grace of God no one was injured and all we do is accept more and more from our elected officials and the developers.

Now I am not against RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT, and by that I dont mean "Affordable Housing" built into the development!!!

In Whitestone we have 28 homes going up on a toxic stretch of land and 6 acres that will eventually be developed with a minimum of 55 homes, on top of other buildings and Commercial Variances, as in the Whitehouse deal and the TD bank Deal. All the while No consideration is given, and no means taken to handle the increased traffic!!

5th avenue in Whitestone under the Bridge is just the begining of what is to come. It is the case study of what can, may, and eventualy will happen to our neighoods.

STOP THE MADNESS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

What do you expect, wider streets??
You are talking about a neighborhood that has much less traffic than many other areas of this city; don't expect too much sympathy. You are not special because you live in Whitestone.

If you should be concerned about anything it should be addressing the increased electric usage on an already stressed power grid.

OMG, more one family McMansions! Many neighborhoods in this city wish that was their problem.

Read the post, No consideration given to the increased traffic that will come. Pretty simple comment if you ask me. Bottom line is we are being sold out to the developers by our elected officials. Quality of Life affects everyone as we are all entitled to a good one!

If you are Jealous of the new "McMansions" sorry to hear that. Work harder, get an education and better yourself, then buy one, pay the same taxes we pay and what you would expect nothing?

Seriously people Why is it that if its a "good neighborhood" they dont deserve safe, secure, quality of lives with parks that are kept?

Alfredo , I agree 1000% 5th avenue is just a microcsm of what is going on around us, and idiots like the last two posters show why and how it is allowed to continue.

Keep up the good fight.

So what you are saying is commercial vehicles and illegal trucks are ok on residential streets that were not built to handle it. Who cares about the safety and well being of the residents on the block? Do I understand your point??

What an irritating voice this Crowley has! FAIL!, at first I thought it was a mildly retarded
woman being interviewed.

"So what you are saying is commercial vehicles and illegal trucks are ok on residential streets that were not built to handle it."

No, the poster was complaining about (single family) housing development and how badly it would apparently impact traffic in Whitestone.

Do new McMansions somehow negatively affect the safety and security of the neighborhood? I doubt it. Is the increased traffic from the addition of single family homes going to bring clogging amounts of traffic to the streets of Whitestone? Hardly.

Of all the problems in this borough, new single family homes that actually have yards and grass and the crushing volumes of traffic *sarcasm* they bring does not rank high on the list

Alfredo, what does development of one family homes in whitestone have anything to do with illegal truck traffic?

Does Liz have a bunch of marbles in her mouth?

Heard her speak live at a few firehouse rallies and, granted, she's no orator, but she didn't sound like she just had a root canal done as she does in this interview.

Alfredo, what does development of one family homes in whitestone have anything to do with illegal truck traffic?

I never said it did, what I said was that no consideration is given to traffic issues when large scale developments are planned. All that 55 plus 28 new homes would do in the long term is increase the volume of vehicles already traveling on 5th avenue from 107 an hour (as per DOT) to on average if you count two cars per household, at 217 cars per hour traveling on a 28 ft wide residential street. If you consider that (again as per DOT) 33% of the 107 cars speed and you add 33% for the additional 110 cars per hour you would be at roughly 60 cars per hour speeding.

Again, this problem on 5th avenue began in 1997, when all of a suddent they extended a concrete divider. In effect preventing cars the option of turning onto 6th avenue. I ask from 1939 to 1997this was not the case, why? Take into account that the original designe for the Bridge exit called for 7th avenue, a 68 ft wide street to be the 1st option of a right turn.

It will create more illegal truck traffic during the construction stage as 5th avenue is a direct line to the Waterside Estates sit, when it is developed. From there one can only guess to the number of added commercial vehicles that will utilize our small residential street as a conduit into our community.

Our organization has posted numerous photos and stories on this blog about the illegal truck traffic on our small residential street. The latest story was a couple of months ago when an 18 Wheeler made an illegal turn, ran over a hydrant, felt a bump, stoped, and reversed over the hydrant yet again (if it was a person, he or she would have been killed for certain). This truck also ruptured a gas tank spilling (as per DOT and DEC on site) over 100 gallons of diesel fuel into the street and soil. Thus creating a Haz Mat condition that is not remedied (that we know of) as of today.

My point was that we are all in a similar situation and nothing is being done about it. We deserve better, wheter we live in Whitestone, or anywhere else in the City. Wheter "McMansions" are being built or not, we as a people deserve better.

We have complained to the police who have claimed to have sent an officer on the block and all he saw was one truck within an hour. When asked what time and day, they could not reply. This same "officer" was "dispatched" on our block to monitor a "conditions" situation, and it was alleged that several tickets were issued. When asked for the type of summons and dates and times of summons' we were told they do not keep records that way. According to several Sgts, and Lius, on the job, this was a lie, simply because of the fact that it was classified a "conditions" there would be detailed and accurate records.

Our Councilman has written several letters requesting both sinage and a possible one way scenario (which we feel would be the only solution at this point). So far it has fallen on deaf ears. But, along with his office, other elected officials (Assemblyman Braunstein has been most helpful as well), other local civic groups that we reached out to, and our CB7, a remedy can be reached before a tragedy occurs. This time it was a hydrant, let us not wait for a next time.

Again I say "It is unacceptable that with all the development going on in our City, there is no planning for vehiclur traffic especially commerical"

"One need not be in a position of power, nor hold a title to affect positive change" A.C.

Alfredo, you mention your organization - what organization is that? I think we face very similar problems - in Staten Island - and are interested in brainstorming?
