How many things can you find wrong with this photo?

The DOB still hasn't responded to a complaint about this property yet from last year. So let's help them out by identifying all the issues here.

Apparently illegal commercial parking in the front yard of a residence.

Blocking egress of the house, illegal curb cut, blocking the sidewalk, the sidewalk is cracked.

The problem, of course, is that once people choose to live like animals, there is very little you can do about it. Do you arrest and jail the owner? Ticket and fine him and then when he doesn't pay, you still do nothing? Confiscate his vehicles, one after another? There is no solution once these people move in, unfortuantely.

Gas tank in vehicle too close to building.

In summary...

- Paving over the front yard is illegal.

- Storing a commercial vehicle on a residential property overnight is illegal. And we know this is done because the address of the residence appears on the commercial vehicle.

- Parking on the front yard is illegal.

- Blocking a public sidewalk with a vehicle is illegal.

- The curb cut (not shown) would be illegal

- Blocking egress of the building, as someone else pointed out, is also illegal and a fire hazard

- And yes, if DOT really wanted to be sticklers, the sidewalk is cracked.

If there were routine multi-agency quality-of-life sweeps of just what can be seen from the street just think how much better our city would look and how much money the city would rake in in fines. Instead, they invest time and energy into initiatives like raising parking rates another quarter and ticketing people who come back to their cars a minute late. Insanity.

Thank the Tweeding politicians. Gets rid of those pesky quality of life types that waste time from going after opportunities for honest graft.

Someone that lives like this is not about to bother their electeds (except for those all important zoning variances), and indeed, has filled the house with people who do not vote but make swell photo ops for tweeding programs.

Nothing at all wrong in the picture. This is Queens, where quality of life is a quickly dying catch phrase.

They probably did "respond" but the van was blocking the address and the inspectors couldn't see it from their rolling car, so they signed off on the complaint from the local coffee shop as unfounded.

For a little while, back in the mid 1990's, there was. But like everything else, Bloomie stopped hiring everything except cronies and traffic agents, and those multi-agency sweeps went by the wayside.

Another problem that alot of overtime was given to do those sweeps. Once the ot was taken away, nothing was ever done about these complaints. Civil service workers often seem to get SOMEWHAT motivated only when overtime is involved. That seems to be a condition of theirs in order to get them to do their jobs just halfway properly.

It's not insane, it's SOP. Why break a sweat when you can go for the low hanging fruit? Honest hard working people pay fines, dirtbags don't.

I refuse to believe that this is what Queens has been reduced to.

How do we, as a "Civilized" society allow and tolerate what is happening around us?

Politicians involved in some of the biggest Land Grab scams since Lewis and Clark, overdevelopment with no consideration to effects on community, Elected and Appointed Government Officials behaving as Kings and Queens with their "Let them eat cake" mentality!

Enough already! We do not deserve this nor should we stand for it!!!

What I really do not understand is that we all must call 3-1-1 to report each individual infraction.

It's one thing for a "blind" DOB inspector to respond and not see something that has a Complaint number, but then there is the whole issue of violations in all communities -- very obvious violations -- and why don't the agencies issue violations without the public having to report them.

Makes no sense and the Quality of Life issues continue to impact a community's lifestyle --

Do they really think that the community activists are the only people who care?

When nearly everyone on the block chooses to do this, it's an entirely different problem. It's time for the remaining hold outs with real front yards to move out. This trend only gets worse and it never gets better.

There's the crap that's imposed by developers who don't even live in the city or unaccountable bureaucrats, and then there's the voluntary crap of your own neighbors and the retail store-owners.

Since when is it illegal to park a commercial vehicle on private property?
The law only prohibits street parking for commercial vehicles at night in a residential neighborhood.
There is no prohibition in the statute for parking in a residential driveway or garage.

It's a DOB zoning violation, not a DOT violation.

Queens is looking more and more like Filth-adelphia every day.

at first glance I would swear we were looking at Fushing, were this is normal. But I see it's Maspeth, when is this going to end,or will it!

"It's a DOB zoning violation, not a DOT violation."

Correct, and you can't even use your driveway for "dead" storage, like a passenger car without plates on it.

There are lots of commercial vehicles on 74th st. and surrounding blocks. The precinct, as well as Liz Crowley's office has been called and nothing has been done. They don't care about our quality of life!

Since we are on the subject of DOT issues, what is the rule for official plates? This guy parks his white DOT Meter Maintenance truck #1116 on 72 street every night. The license #K19081 says official on the bottom of the plate. Is he allowed to take his truck home every night and park on a residential block where there are no meters?

----------------------------------
The precinct commanders don't want the patrol cops to write parking summonses anymore. Now they want them to write moving violations and criminal court summonses. And they only are required to write just 20 summonses a month! I could write that number in one day!!!!!

Someone should get Bloomburg's ear and let him know about all the revenue the city is missing out on. He loves to make money. Imagine how much the city could make just on DOT infractions.

Gee, my husband works for UPS. What if everyone brought their work vehicles home for the night -- something has to be done about this. Is anyone listening?

Anonymous said...

Sadly, no one is listening. Once these local politicians get elected, you don't see them until it's time for the next election. As for quality of life - Queens is on life support.

No one is listening and no one cares

Good to know Crappy.

I could not find the actual zoning laws, but found the 311 complaint location if anyone is interested.

Right across the street 3 houses did the same thing.
53-33 70th st
53-35 70th st
53-37 70th st

The DOB gave them all violations.
53-37 even broke up all his new cement and put the lawn back. So the DOB is not failing completely.

I just don't understand why the DOB hasn’t shown up to 53-42 yet, the complaint was put in over 6 months ago.

Anonymous said...

I forgot 53-56 70th st. The DOB also gave them a violation for the same thing

a new home owner,in my area, just cut a second curb at his 60 x 100 property. it is zoned R-2A,one /two family.

is this one house/two driveway change legal ?

it just had it's SWO, rescinded for three other violations.

a strictly residential area.

Looks like Astoria.

- He wouldn't DARE do anything! What, piss off all the minimum wage "illegal imports" that replaced the middle class here?

Are you kidding? THIS IS NYC. America's newest Republican makeover. Get used to it already!

""write moving violations and criminal court summonses""
-------------------
EXACTLY !
It is now the same protocol the cops in Los Angeles have been given
They only go after people they know have money and have no choice but "bend over" and pay up.

The 1 family house covered in garbage, illegal cars, sub apartments sheltering 40 illegal mestizo familys gets a free pass.

Speaking of "bending over" HOLY shit has anybody seen the new DMV drivers license renewal fees ? $138 !!!
